Help Media Link HD - Questions and Troubleshooting

Congrats on the free car dock  Is your screen set to time out? If that is not it. I would just go into display settings and turn screen brightness all the way down :p Might be a lame work around until there is a fix, but this works too :D
Thanks! I was pretty shocked too. That thing was $35 bucks!

I have my screen set to never turn off, so maybe that's the issue.

I'll try to set it to time out after 2 mins. and see if that helps. Thanks for the tips!

I plugged in my Media Link and it worked flawlessly, it even connected to my network without a password. There were only two issues; Everything has a red push and when I played videos that I recorded with the phone, it had to buffer every 30 seconds or so.
I'm not sure if I can do anything about the red push since it's running through my receiver, I don't recall it having color adjustments for each input.
The buffering is very irritating though. Does anyone know if this is the phone, the card(class 2), or the Media Link?

ive noticed no red push in files ive viewed.

the buffering can be caused by low bandwidth on your network, and/or other clients using more bandwidth, reducing that to which you can use on the media link.

your channel could be crowded/have interference if you have lots of neighbors with APs who are using 5ghz (im ASSuming you are using 5GHZ)

try and move the link AWAY from the display and/or away from the router if its close to it.

the reason the media link is able to get your wifi info is through your phones wifi setup. this is all done automatically and this has been discussed earlier in this thread.

it could also be an issue with the wifi radio INSIDE the phone itself. there have been reports across many people who are having wifi issues (even not using the media link) and this could be some software issues inside the phone itself.

i recall the original EVO having this issue back then (or was it the 3D?) that was solved by a software update, so give HTC a holler, open up a trouble ticket and explain the issue. the more tickets, the more htc will see there is a problem.

you can also post your router and wifi settings so others can cross reference.

So I've played with mine a short bit and have had the same issues as others (stuttering, audio/video sync, buffering) and though I've done no troubleshooting I have to wonder if it's worth it?

Does MHL do full mirroring? Or are there DLNA blocks that may prevent certain media from playing?

If MHL is plug and play full on, then I may not keep the MediaLink and save myself ~$50.

As far as I know MHL will do the job just fine. I prefer the convenience of not having to plug my phone in and being able to use it while streaming a movie.

What was the work around?

Well, there are the two known WiFi networks the Media Link works with, named on the TV screen:
1: the name of the WiFi home network
2: "HTC Portable Hotspot".

When I reset the ML (press button for 10 secs) then appears a third WiFi network, named on the TV screen:
3: "Media Link HD [xxxx]".

I looked in the phone's WiFi settings and there was "Media Link HD [xxxx]" available.
I choose this WiFi network, password "1234567890HTC", and was been connected to it.

Then a strange thing had happened: On the TV screen the WiFi network switched to the home network's.
So, I switched the phone's WiFi also to home network's.
Then, and this may be important, I saved in the phone's ML settings before I connected the phone to the ML.
Then I connected the phone to the ML and after some time, needed for configuration, phone and ML was connected via WiFi home network :)

I disconnected and reconnected a few time and always the connection was via WiFi home network, without any delay for reconfigations.

Hope my clumsy discription is somewhat understandably ... :)

When I try to play videos taken on an old cell phone (.3gp), I get this message:

"Sorry this video cannot be played (704)"

So, does it really mirror what's on your screen? The video plays fine on my phone, but not when its connected to the media link.

Also, when I view pics or other types of videos, sometimes it doesn't show on the tv the way it is on my screen - the orientation is wrong on the tv.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

That is a unusual one. Shot in the dark here! With orientation issues, that is an easy fix buy rotating the pics in the gallery of your LTEVO. (easier then rotating the TV ;p ) Other thing could be the settings on your TV? 1080p, 720p, etc.

The video play issues, I have not had any issues playing various types of formats through Media Link. I wonder if your set has a DRM built in?

I would definitely Google/wiki that code and see what you come up with. Plz come back and let us know. :)

Side question: Is there anyway to rotate a video? I shot a video of my son with the ltevo and the orientation is screwed up for some reason...

I did google the error and came up empty.

My TV is 1080p. I don't know what to do. Most of the videos of my son are in the .3gp format (taken by my mom who's my babysitter with her old samsung dumbphone).

I've been playing with it for a few days now. And while I still like it, I'm considering taking it back and just getting the MHL adapter.

I have excellent, full strength connection, but every time I watch Netflix it stutters a lot, and then the audio isn't synching up after it starts to stutter.

I wonder what might be causing that. If there's a way to make it better, then I'll keep it....if not, I'll be selling it or taking it back.

It streams when it uses the Streaming Player, it mirrors when you use something like Mobo Player or DoubleTwist Player (I think). So when it is streaming you may get video errors like that. Shot in the dark here.

Ok the Saga of Sikclown's ML is at a close. I replaced my Linksys ea4500 with a Netgear n900 and used all the same settings and low and behold Media Link works great the way it was intended. The new router also keeps my Evo LTE and Transformer Prime on the network at all times. Oh happy days! Anyone running into issues post all of your settings, I have been through 3 routers so I am getting pretty good at Media Link lmao.

Update: I have been emailing back and forth with HTC support about my issues and I just received an email that an update was just released/will be released for ML that addresses connection issues and speed. Take that with a grain of salt as it comes from a tier 1 guy who was eager to help but not very knowledgeable.

Damn you I was looking at upgrading to the Netgear N900 but wasn't ready to pull the trigger. So you have to go tell me it could resolve a few issues I have been having with the ML and my phone.

I may also go with the N600 I think the dedicated video mode could help me with netflix streams and the clear channel selector will help becuase most of my devices are still on 2.4ghz spec?

Good to know the router helped your issue I suspect mine is not playing nice as well as I have tried messing with every thing with very little improvement and my 30mbps connection should be more than capable.

I won't hold my breath on the HTC fix.

I'm taking mine back today. I just don't have the patience to fool around with it. I am just going to purchase the MHL adapter instead.

I had a similar issue (mother-in-law shot vid from her phone in portrait) so I uploaded it to YouTube and one of the options when you edit the video is to rotate it. Worked well though obviously there are black bars on the left and right but it beats tilting your head to watch it on the big screen! :D

I returned my media link to sprint and got the universal mhl adapter with dock instead. It solved 99% of my issues.

mine is working fine. you just can't beat the no cables covenience. love it & couldn't go back to wired.

I played an HD movie yesterday (few minutes of it anyways) encoded to MP4, 1500kbps, 1280x720 (1.5GB). played nicely, no delay in sound or anything

I will try a higher quality 720p encode next time and see how it fares. (just hate the 4GB limitation on fat32. arghhh)

well worth the 100 bux so far, imho

... I will try a higher quality 720p encode next time and see how it fares....

Reading on the box of the Media Link says the ML should put 1080p out to the TV.
My TV says this too, with the One X's screen on its screen :)

But I've heard, when it comes to videos, the ML can't stream a 1080p's video on the TV, such a video will be scaled back to 720p.

It isn't my own experience, I've read this 1080p issue on the One X's help (Q&A) on the German HTC site.
Weird, on HTC's international site I didn't found that question ;)

Anyhow, I like the Media Link because it needn't a cable to connect my phone ... and I mustn't have 1080p :)
