HTC Hero doesnt download IMAP emails

Hi,

(apologies for the long post - this is my first time :p)

I have a HTC Hero on o2 (an unlocked G2 Touch to be specific) which is set up to connect to my work email using the on-board mail app (the non-gmail one). As I have folders for my emails, I use IMAP both within Outlook 2003 at work and on the Hero. This all worked swimmingly for about 2 months and then recently I have noticed that I have been getting a lot fewer emails both on the Hero and within Outlook. I have also seen emails which I recieved during the day in Outlook disappearing after about an hour or so.

I have spoken to my email provider and they tested it by sending me an email (genius) which strangely is still present in outlook, although it didnt appear on my hero.

So in summary, it seems that I have two problems - my hero doesnt seem to download any emails, and my IMAP account is losing emails.

I should probably add that my hero is configured to show all emails (irrespective of age or size). I have also checked my webmail and the emails are missing from there

I suspect that either outlook or the Hero app is doing something strange and deleting emails after a certain period. Hope somebody can help me as I am starting to question my sanity - this all worked about a week ago!?

Alec

Welcome to the Android Forums!!

I have moved your post to the Hero forum, hopefully you will get better answers here. I personally use IMAP (albeit not with an exchange server) on my Hero and it works faultlessly. If your Outlook is loosing emails, my first guess would be that there is a problem with your exchange server rather than the phone.

Have you checked with anyone else at your work if they are have similar / any issues?

Hi guys,

firstly apologies for posting in the wrong forum - im such a noob. Also thanks for the quick responses.

I defo use IMAP in Outlook, not POP or Exchange. Nobody else has this issue although they all use POP as they only access their emails from the one computer, I just like to be different!

I should add that this is why I presumed it may be a problem with the Hero as nobody else uses a smartphone to access their emails and they arent suffering either. The other option is that its an IMAP issue but my web host said there were no known issues with their IMAP servers.

If you are missing emails in your webmail and you are not using POP anywhere I can't see that it would be a problem with the Hero. I don't know if there is a specific email that's gone missing that you could ask your ISP to trace? I know that's hard as they are missing but...

Just to add, could anyone else in your office be obtaining your emails by POP? Secretary or back-up co-worker?

I dont think anyone else is connecting to the email account, I set up their desktops so if they were it would be a mistake on my part. I dont think I have configured anything else to read my emails apart from Outlook and the Hero. If it helps, I have just uninstalled outlook, removed my windows mail profile and re-installed Mozilla Thunderbird and found that the exact same issue exists with Thunderbird.

I sent a test email from a Gmail account to the IMAP account earlier and although it appeared both in Thunderbird and on the Hero, I have just seen that one has dissappeared from both so I will try my ISP again to see where it has gone to.

I will let you know how I get on with them - thanks for the help guys!

The problem with IMAP is that any of the devices you access the email on could be deleting it. Does it disappear completely or do you have a Deleted email folder that deleted mail goes into? I sometimes have issues with Spam filters in my email software deleting messages. They appear on the phone for a short time then vanish again as my desktop client downloads and deletes them. Do you have server spam filtering that could be doing this?

I use the excellent K9 on my Hero to manage multiple IMAP email accounts without any problems, and I recommend that if you want to rule out the phone as being the issue - you may find you want to stick with K9 and its push email!

Thanks for that. I have been speaking to the wonderful folk at 1and1 (my ISP) and despite their best efforts I have made some progress. I did the following:

1. Removed the email account from my Hero and tested just using Thunderbird. New emails still disappeared therefore it isnt a problem with the Hero (and as this is an android forum, I should probably stop here...)

2. Removed the email account from Thunderbird and tested just accessing the 1and1 webmail. New emails still disappeared

3. Changed the password of my account incase either there is a phantom computer somewhere which I set up with this account whilst sleepwalking, or somebody maliciously wants to read emails to keep abreast on the latest line of commercial refrigeration parts. So far this is working....

Now that I think about it, I was fooling around with an exchange server a couple of weeks ago....I may be a very silly boy....watch this space.

Well, I cant for the life of me find the configuration within the exchange server which is pinching my emails (ill save that question for an MS Exchange forum) but so far, the password change has helped so I must apologise for wasting your time!

Thanks for the help all the same guys!! (and no thanks to 1and1 support!)
