One-handed myth

Hey guys, we all seem to be getting along great here so I thought I'd try starting up a general discussion or two (or more, depending on how they're received) about Android and phones in general. Hopefully the mods don't mind...

My first smartphone was an HTC Incredible, which I got days after it was released. It was a great starter phone, working great out of the box. And as I started becoming a bit disappointed in its performance I rooted it. But once I rooted it I soon after wanted to put a custom ROM on it. I settled on CM7.

The Incredible worked great, but I was slowly developing a desire for a better phone. Better how? Well, a larger higher resolution screen was my primary goal. And battery life that was not too much worse was desirable as well, but as long as I could reasonably get 16 hours I was good. This is how I settled on the Spectrum and it has worked out well for me.

But it took me awhile to get used to the significantly larger screen. And while I was getting used to it, I kept reading articles about how a certain black mock-turtle neck wearing individual claimed that 3.5" (the Incredible has a 3.7" screen. Close enough) was the perfect screen size. His claim was based on the average person's ability to operate their phone with one hand.

Looking back at my usage over the two plus years I've had a smartphone, the time I've operated my phone with one hand is probably less than 1%. Of that tiny fraction of time, the vast majority of it is while I'm driving. Now, I don't text while I'm driving. But I do occasionally have to answer calls and such. And I noticed that regardless of the placement of the power button, it is very difficult to turn on and unlock the screen with one hand no matter how large or small the phone is.

I've also been paying attention to how I use my phone in other situations. Even when I COULD operate the phone with one hand, I WOULDN'T. Why? I found my accuracy is much higher doing everything with two hands as opposed to two hands.

It also seems to me that as people become more dependent on their phones, and as those phones become more central to daily life, people will mind less and less using two hands while operating their phones. I think that as long as a person's thumbs can overlap a bit in the center of the onscreen keyboard, the screen is not too big.

Personally, the screen of the Spectrum is at or near the upper end of usable screen size for me; I doubt I'll want a phone with a larger screen if it means having a larger phone.

What about you guys? How many of you try to use your phone one-handed? And what are your opinions on this subject overall?

I am the very definition of the one handed user; so much so that i cringe and silently mock people that use two hands to type on a little 3.5 inch screen.

That said, it was awkward to use the large 4.5 inch spectrum screen for all of a week; it took that long for my thumb to adjust its natural placement on the screen. Once i physically adapted, I'm 100% back to one handed use. I don't have the slightest problem, aside from trying to turn the screen on while holding it (tricky simply due to size; I used a Samsung briefly not to long ago that placed the power/lock button on the right hand side. While I found that annoying for a smaller phone, it occurs to me that such a placement would be perfect for a big one).

I am a one hander, although i prefer to hold it in my left and swype with my right. I have never used two hands to type (except for one to hold and one to type/write), i've used smart phones for 11years, and never had one with a physical keyboard. (Used palm then windows then android)

Also, never liked the power button on the side, but agree it makes sense on larger screens. I think 5" is too big for a phone and too small for anything else for personal use. I can think of several business uses for a 5" device. I would be interested in a 4.7" screen on a phone, but that would be pushing it.

I'm with you lite. I think 2 hands makes more sense and feels more natural. I can use one but my natural inclination is to use 2. I like to swype with one hand though just because it's neat to be able to type so fast while just using one thumb :p

I can do most things on my phone with one hand but I find if i need to reach the upper right-hand corner then it can be difficult to do it comfortably.

So for me it's definitely 2 hands most of the time, but I do mix it up depending on the situation and how I feel.

I figured one-handed operation meant holding and operating the phone with one hand. The same one hand. Otherwise I figured it would be two-handed. You know, holding with one hand and operating with the other.

Even though my hands seem to be a bit on the larger side, I have difficulty doing much on the Spectrum using just one hand. Maybe I need to work on my manual dexterity...

use the quote button so we know who or what you are responding to, because this seems like a response to what someone said, but I'm not sure to what, and I don't feel like rereading everyone's post to try and figure out to what you could be responding to. If it's a response to my post, then I'm on the same page as you. I couldn't imagine sitting the phone down on the table, or your lap and using two hands on the screen at the same time. So I think everyone here understands what you meant by one or two hands.

I use one hand most of the time except for typing then it is two handed. At times it can be a stretch to balance the phone in the hand, mash icons and thumb through pages but it is progressing with practice. The sleek design has made for a few fumbles but i am getting a case today (hopefully) so it should add a bit of bulk to grip in the jamb of my hand.

I hate a small screen, hate, hate, hate lol. My biggest problem is when i type. I dont have big sausage fingers but the keys are pretty small and my texts end up being 1 word sentances. as.I.mash.the.period.rather.than.the.spacebar. I texted my freind and I glanced at the text box just before sending and it made zero sense. Just a bunch of random characters. It is taking some time getting used to it but it is a gripe I have. I am using the stock keyboard too.

if you know where all the keys on the keyboard are at then try swype. I think you'll find it improves your word accuracy greatly. I've been using swype for a little over a month now and will never go back to thumb pecking. Not to mention that it's more fun than regular typing :p

I was paying attention as i was typing a reply on another forum. I am kind of a hybrid two hander, I'll hold with my left and type mostly with my right, but i ill peck a letter here and there with my left thumb. Its sounds a lot more akward than it is. Holding with my left, working with my right seems to be my usual grip. I might give swype another try, i have been using it on my new TF300 i just bought and am starting to grow slightly used to it. It works slightly better than trying to peck, depending it the tablet is Portrait or landscape.

As far as phone/ screen size, I love it. I actually wouldnt be dissapointed for it to be slightly larger. I love how the phone feels in my hand compared to my Ally or even my gf's iphone.

ive also seen people talking about screens being too big... i have long fingers.. i can touch all corners of the spectrums screen with one hand.. the only thing bigger i would go to would be a gs3 gnex or htc one x.... the galaxy note is pushing it a little.. but if i wanted something damn near tablet size id just get a tablet and use my google voice with voip and a bluetooth headset...
