To all whom it may concern.

I called Google costumer service to ask what would happen if I tried to enable wifi tether from the android menu. The representative said that it would only redirect me to a page to contact T-Mobile so that I can buy a tethering plan.

I gave FoxFi from the Play Store a try and it worked perfectly to tether my tablet to my stock 4.0.4 ICS Google Nexus.

Just decided to jot this down if anyone was wondering about this, I know I was.

I'm using the unlocked play store version and I could use wifi tether perfectly before rooting my phone. I don't abuse it and only use it when I absolutely have to, because I'm sure they'd charge or block you for any serious tethering. But it definitely works

I second this. I am currently unrooted as well and have successfully used the WiFi tether feature with my Google Play GSM GNex on T-Mobile. The same was true with my Nexus S, which I got with a T-Mobile contract, though it had no T-Mobile branding.

I have used it as well.
I do NOT abuse it and at most I have used it to VPN into something else.
I have used a whopping 72MB in 2 weeks.

Using the tether to browse web will get you an upsell notice after a few minutes and after that they know your doing it.

My suggestion: Don't abuse it.

Tether + VPN and give your carrier the finger. Unless they have spyware on your device, they can't know. Being charged extra for something you already pay for is the very definition of rip-off. I'm just happy i found a plan where tethering was 'free' (as it should be!). Not in the US though.

Alright, what's VPN? I've seen it in the options menu but I have no idea what it's good for. What does it do?

A VPN is a virtual private network.
Basically you connect to a remote network via an encrypted tunnel.
The idea behind this is that since the carriers cannot see what data is being transferred they have no idea what your doing.

IMHO, it's none of their business anyway.

There are quite a few of us that work in information systems or related occupations and rely on VPNs for day to day operations in and out of our offices.
Some companies need them to access intranets on mobile devices, for example.
