My G1 has been running slow and the internet is just miserable. I know its not my service because it is slow all over and the browser just blows on edge 3g or wifi.

Anyone else notice this too? It seems to have been happening since the last security update. I dont want to reset my phone if i have too

Any suggestions?

The g1's performance is making me want to go back to blackberry

This is actually the browser's fault. I had the exact same problem.I was searching for browsers and found the best one. It is easy to use, has a fullscreen option, and is at least 3 times faster than stock.

it is called Steel. Download it at the android market, and spread the word. People shouldn't suffer the crappy stock browser

I had steel and hated it, and I didn't notice it being any faster than the stock browser.

a couple suggestions for ya:

In the Browser settings:
-Clear cache
-Clear History
- do this periodically and the phone will move a lot faster in general.

Messages
-Download SMSBackup or any other SMS backup app
- run the backup and then delete your SMS threads periodically, this too will help keep your phone running faster.

Apps & Widgets
- Download Task Panel or TasKiller Free
(or another task/app killing program)

These will show you what's running on your phone, so when your browser is slow, you can see that 4 apps are running and 3 widgets never stop running. Task Panel allows you an "Ignore list" (so that it doesn't kill anything important) and a "Wanted list" which will auto-kill apps YOU specify whenever the available memory drops below a certain level.

Some widgets are always on, some only are running when they update. If you have a lot of widgets that are the "always running" variety, that's going to slow down your phone. Some of those widgets show up as "running" even after you've removed them from the home page! Even after rebooting the phone, too!

Memory For Lemmings
This is a great app. Android periodically clears up lag on your phone by finding memory that's not really being used and cleaning it up. Memory For Lemmings merely nudges android to run that memory cleanup manually. I alternate between killing apps, and running this little app, and my phone is pretty good to go.

thanks for all the suggestions i will try some of them out

as to keep in the cache and memory clean i do all that it it is still a bit laggy, i do hoep there is an update soon to fix this. Android potential is great but suffering in the present isn't

I agree - hope they fix this.

I wasn't referring to "cache" I was referring to internal RAM where the apps are stored from the market. Actually remove apps to get your device to the point of that much free space. (clearing txt history, call log, and browser cache does help some though, but in my case only freed about 1 MB.)

you can also go into menu>settings>applications>manage applications
scroll to the market and "clear cache".

While you're there, lots of other apps have either "clear cache" or "clear data" fields.

BE CAREFUL, when you "clear data" it's likely you're removing settings and username/passwords, but if the app is say -- a game you don't log into, then you're clearing high score information, most likely. I think I hit "clear data" on gmail and it basically removed my username and password. I had to log into my phone again to get calendar/gmail/contacts up and running again. No big deal, but that initial sync takes a bit longer than you want it to.

Agreed. I will add that when I reset my phone it of course erases everything, back to a factory state. It did help me narrow down the apps I should "reinstall". I have been keeping it near 25 MB free and things have been much better.
