Favorite Apps for the HTC EVO 4G LTE

I am currently subscribing to HBO and Showtime for the summer. I wish I could use HBO Go, but it's not supported by Time Warner Cable.

You could just use the HBO Go app :) Before I go through describing the easy process of making it work I want to get the nod from the mods here.

It's a bit tricky because even though the app isn't available for us it's only usable if you have a valid subscription to a cable/sat provider so I see nothing inherently illegal about using it. The workaround is rather easy though.

On edit:

Here's a screen cap of the app on my handset.

and yes, it does in fact swing to landscape format when viewing.

These are my top apps. Note that (P) = Paid app, (F) = Free, and (S) = Requires a subscription.

Games

- Draw Something (P) / Draw Free (F) - The bigger the screen you are using, the better this game becomes.
- Fruit Ninja (P/F) - Same reasoning as above.
- Worms (P) - A great strategy game that operates beautifully on this device. The controls are still difficult though.

Entertainment
- Netflix (S) - You know what it is.
- Redbox (F) - You also know what this is.
- Hulu Plus (S) - And this.
- Music Junk (?, legal?) - Play or download music
- Flixster (F) - See upcoming movies, trailers, showtimes, and find theaters.

Productivity
- Tasker (P) - The most valuable app on my phone. If the LTEvo couldn't use it, I would have abandoned it. This allows you to fully automate everything you want on your device. It is the greatest app that has ever existed.
- SugarSync (F) - 5 free GB and completely automatic syncing.
- Wave Launcher (P) - Great if you don't have root. A great way to add capability back into the device and work around the diminished softkeys.
- Quick Settings (F) - Great if you don't have root. When paired with Wave Launcher it's more convenient than going to notification bar>settings>etc to get where you want to go to change various settings.
- Vlingo (F) - Great if you don't have root. When paired with Wave Launcher it's even better.
- Mobile Fax (P) - Turns your phone into a fax machine.
- Our Groceries (F) - Essentially a universally available (Android, iOS, RIM, etc) grocery list app.
- PhoneMyPC (P) - Remote access your PC. It's been a long time since I have recommended this app since the Dev was dishonestly promoting it for so long. But I can't deny how useful and usable this app is.
- Chrome to Phone (F) - Allows you to send a webpage on your PC to your device. Works with both Firefox and Chrome.

Stock App Replacements
- XScope Browser (P) - I can't say enough goods things about it.
- Handcent SMS (F) - Fantastic and convenient SMS popups!
- WidgetLocker (P) - A wonderfully customizable lockscreen replacement.
- Amazon Appstore (F) - Great alternative to Google play, particularly if you have a family that you want to access the same list of paid apps without registering the same gmail account to all phones.
- Beautiful Widgets (P) - Great if you get a non-Sense ROM or you want a sense-like weather/clock widget on your widgetlocker lockscreen.

Other
- Foxfi (P) - Wireless tethering without root! See above post for concerning info.
- Tablet Talk (P) - Connects your android tablet to your LTEvo, allowing you to text via your tablet.
- Tapatalk (P) - Easy and extremely user friendly forum app.
- Wifi Analyzer (F) - See the available Wifi connections around you, as well as their strengths and channels. Very helpful for setting up a home wireless network.
- Pips (F) - Allows you to set a small notification sound that goes off at the top of the hour.
- Tesla LED (F) - Flashlight app. Fully integrated with Widgetlocker and Tasker.
- MyBackupPro - The best phone app and data backup software available IMO.

Have you used the Dolphin Browser and, if so, what do you like better about XScope?

Dolphin is the best I've found so far but always keeping my eyes opened for something better.

Foxfi is not on the market because Sprint banned it. Co-worker found out the hard way when Sprint locked down his LTEVO Acct. Sprint informed him they are charging for Hotspot feature and any data usage over 5gb limit. Now he is stressed big time. Google
"Sprint data overage bill" Getting a sudden monster phone bill sucks.
Pay the $30 bucks IMHO. :)

Mentioning illegal apps w/o a disclaimer or fair warning...not cool IMHO :(
I would hate for a member get nailed like my co-worker did. (just say'n)

Must haves (categorized in top 3's):

Browsers: - Dolphin Mini, Chrome Beta, Ninesky

Storage: Drive, Dropbox, Box

Finance: anMoney, Pocket Budget, Pageonce

Utility: SystemTuner, DX(aka Optimize)Toolbox, 360 Power Saver (find the translated version on XDA)

These last 6 apps are essential to me and have been since I've been using any Android phone:

ES File Explorer
Evernote
GrooveIP (allows for calling from a secondary Google Voice # over wifi or 3g without compromising your primary Sprint #)
Google Voice (allows for incoming texts from your secondary Google Voice #)
FlashImage GUI (best app for flashing kernels and recoveries w/o needing S-OFF. no need to fastboot, adb, etc....just install the app and flash)
Kingsoft Office (one of the best free fully-functional document editor/viewers I've found)

First,
The app itself is free. But it requires a subscription to access the particular paid data. That data is inaccessible without a valid login. And finally, the login credentials are not bypassed from this XDA workaround (from what I have gathered). So taking these into consideration, the workaround from XDA should not be considered warez , and there should be no issue with you posting the process.

And second,
What I'm saying is that I cannot use the HBO Go app. The app requires authentication provided by your cable subscriber, which means that the cable subscriber must support the app itself. Time Warner Cable does not and will not and can not provide login information for such apps. As a result, even though I have a valid HBO subscription, I cannot use the HBO Go app because Time Warner Cable does not support it (hell, they only intermittently support my 30mb internet speeds, and NEVER when I actually need it).

So, although the app looks like it would be great, and a workaround should certainly be permitted, TWC subscribers are SOL from accessing the exclusive HBO content.

Ok, wasn't aware TWC had no agreement in place.

I didn't get the workaround from XDA. It was from another source but I don't doubt the XDA folks made this function as well. My debate on posting this was not so much circumventing the login credentials but using an app that isn't developed for this particular platform.

I'm using it just fine via my slow 7.1 mb DSL. But I feel your pain, more so maybe, as I had to live with Hughesnet for 5 years.

For those that can utilize HBO Go follow these simple steps:

Download the HBO Go apk at the following site:

1: HBO GO-9.apk from Sendspace.com Do not install it at this time.

2: You *must* have an Amazon appstore acct WITH a CC on file and one click access enabled. The app is free but they have to validate your 'purchase' in order to allow the app to function.

3: I found searching for the app via the appstore a minor challenge as the store verifies what apps you should be able to run on your handset.

4: Once you find the app select the FREE icon and it changes to install after it validates your $0 purchase.

5: Close out of the appstore and install the apk you downloaded.

6: Launch the app and authenticate with your provider and login information for that provider. The app launches in portrait format but switches to landscape upon launching a show.

*note* I've noticed a slight problem selecting something to watch on the right side of the screen but it's a minor annoyance given this is an app we should have had a long time ago. So far i've been watching The American for 45 minutes and other than 1 or 2 dropouts and a warning it was dropping out it has been fine. Be sure to go into the menu -> preferences -> video playback and be sure the is set to your liking (3G only or 3G +WiFi).

Give it a shot.

So it's not truly unlimited data after all?

Sprint everything plan is truly "unlimited" :) Hotspot is not part of the "truly unlimited"
plan :p ($30 per mo subscription) Sprint has had "hotspot feature" data capped @ 5gb since OG EVO. :( Sprint has been good custumer service wise. I called to have hotspot turned on for a weekend road trip. Phone call to sprint to using hotspot on my phone was less than 5min :) I kept it on for a week and Sprint pro rated the cost. Sprint only charged me $8 :D Calling Sprint to turn it off was just as easy.

Data used under "Everything Plan" Yes, "Unlimited" :D Data using "Hotspot" No, 'Capped @ 5gb". :( Hotspot data cap has been in effect over year now.

There are numerious OG EVO threads with respect to hotspot/tethering/etc. "Mountain" of good info in them. ;)

Hope, I answered your question

Have you used the Dolphin Browser and, if so, what do you like better about XScope?

Dolphin is the best I've found so far but always keeping my eyes opened for something better.
I have not tried it within the past couple years, but after reading your comment I went ahead and downloaded dolphin to try it out. I've now been using it for a couple days and are a few key differences:

- Data collection - Dolphin runs in the background, always, collecting data. XScope does not (but it is a paid browser).
- Zooming - XScope has "Pin Zoom" which is an absolute necessity when browsing one-handed. I can't stand using dolphin because I am always needing both hands to operate my device (I tend to read things zoomed out and need to zoom in to accurately click hyperlinks, so XScope is infinitely more convenient).
- Rendering Text Field - Dolphin seems to do a little bit better job with fitting the text. Dolphin condenses the text much more than it needs to be, but at least everything is within the margins. XScope either adjusts the text to be exactly on the margins or occasionally misses it slightly, requiring some left-right scrolling to read.
- Entering web addresses - I LOVE dolphin's voice entering ability. I won't use it much since I use bookmarks, but I still REALLY like it!
- Speed - I gotta give it to XScope. It seems to load new pages faster, and without a doubt blows away Dolphin when going back through pages (XScope caches a limited customized number of pages so that going back is instant).

Those gestures in dolphin look like they would be cool too. But again, I just hit a new tab and use my bookmarks. I also am not a fan of whatever dolphin is doing with hiding the tab bar. Sometimes it's down, sometimes it's hidden, and 'sometimes I get a return to the top' arrow (which I like, but I don't always have that option). Whereas XScope's is hidden when you hit the menu button, and returns with the menu button.

In the end, I have to go back to XScope. The cached browsing, and especially pin-zooming, really are deal makers/breakers IMO. Hopefully the dev gets the 'swipe for notification bar' option working when he releases his next update. I really like using the full screen, and the option to hide the notification bar doesn't seem to be working on ICS.

I use alarm clock extreme.... No complaints so far... Make it to work on time lol

I think alarm clock extreme is my all time favorite app! I'm SOOO not a morning person and I have it set to make me solve 3 math problems before I can snooze or shut off my alarm (even easy ones are hard when I'm sleepy ;)) - I never oversleep now! :D

Boat Browser, better than stock by far, ditto on Handcent.

I haven't been able to get the cursor (arrow) keys to appear under the keyboard on Handcent except one time when I got a warning I was on roaming coverage. Am I missing something in the settings?

nullspace - remind me what these cursor/arrow keys are supposed to do in Handcent? Because since getting this phone I've been missing the Next/Previous options but I don't still have Handcent on my old Shift. Drives me a little nuts but I try not to complain :D
---------------------

Edit: Oops, I'm thinking of mail, not text messaging. I think I was out in the sun too long today

But OK, now I'll ask that question: what happened to the Next/Previous options in mail that used to be there?

The cursor keys would allow you to move the cursor up, down, right, left in the text box. Also, they would let you choose one of the predicted words as you typed.

I don't usually use the stock keyboard but I just switched to it to look, and those cursor keys you're referring to are there for me (in Handcent). The Swype keyboard doesn't seem to have them and neither did the keyboard I used to use. I don't think I've ever turned that on anywhere since I don't use those cursor keys, so I'm not sure if it's a setting?

For those discussing browser apps, I'm preferring Chrome over Dolphin. It doesn't have the customization that Dolphin does but it's faster IMHO...also it's awesome that you can move over your bookmarks easily...or if your logged in say at work and we're viewing a page you can then check it out over the phone if still logged in on your work computer. Now of course there is the privacy issues there but it's not a big deal to me.

I also really miss the previous and next arrows within the native email app. I wish they would add them back.

So... what happened to the Next/Previous options in the stock mail app (not gmail, regular mail) that used to be there when you're reading a message and want to go to the next one? I don't have a screenshot from my old Shift but I know those buttons used to be there....

I'm really loving chrome, and and the prefetch feature is nice.

I also really enjoy chrome. Having all my bookmarks is wonderful. I am wondering though is there an add on or a menu from the desktop chrome that will let me open a tab I have open on my phone? I thought I read that they recently added that function but I can't seem to find it?
