Root [S-OFF] Juopunutbear S-OFF -Beta Release

Good news and bad news. Good... got the timing correct and now have s-off. Bad is I am still at the "arrow screen". Any tips would be appreciated. I am still researching xda, google, etc. but will check back frequently.

So your stuck on the juopunutbear screen.. this his how fix. Open command prompt and where ever you extracted the file.. for me it was in my c directory..use command controlbear.exe -r

Thanks, duel, but no luck. I tried that on the arrow screen and in fastboot. No luck. In command prompt it says device returned to normal, should be in normal boot mode.

The good news is that it's fixable. I was at that same point. It's just a matter of finding the right adb/fastboot commands. There was probably 10 or so commands I had to run to get it booting. I think the user in the chat room that helped me was "hyuh" or something like that.

Found this:

If you are stuck at Juopunutbear screen

a) if you can go to bootloader.. Then connect the phone to pc.. From fastboot (device should read fastboot usb)

Go to controlbear folder (from where you ran controlbear originally!!!!!!!!!!!) in pc..
Open command window there
(hold shift + right click->open command window here)

Once you got the window.. Type this
"ControlBear.exe -f" without quotes (Or "ControlBear -f" depending on your pc configuration)
This should reset your phone to a working state.



If successful and if your SD card is boogered up like mine was you'll need to do this (I remember running these commands)

1. Install busybox
2. adb shell busybox fdisk /dev/block/mmcblk1
3. type o
4. type w
5. adb shell busybox fdisk /dev/block/mmcblk1
6. type n
7. select primary, then 1
8. chose default sizes
9. type w
10. adb shell busybox mkfs.vfat /dev/block/mmcblk1p1

Thanks Admack. I am working again, but a lot more gray hair this morning. What does the busybox commands do? I formatted my sd card, but lost half the capacity. It is operational and I have my ROM.zip there. I want to be very careful proceeding forward after the harrowing experience from yesterday. Seriously, I think I lost a couple of years on the back end as a result.

You have to keep trying.. its going to take multiple times but It will work

Did the same to me several times. The timing is essential. When I finally got it, the process lasted seconds. Just keep trying to follow the timing instructions, eventually you'll get it.

If you have ext4 touch recovery there is no advantage..

I found it on xda .. they have a free and paid app.. or Google it.. not to hard to find

Not exactly true. While 4ext makes the advantage minimal, there is still a few advantages to S-OFF.

1) Some Evo 3D ROMs don't flash properly, even with 4EXT's Smartflash enabled. The boot.img needs to be flashed manually or you have ot enter 4EXT through fastboot.

2) When it comes time to update your firmware and radios, it is a royal pain to do it if you're S-ON. It requires you to either flash a stock ROM, relock the bootloader, take the OTA, then re-root from square 1. The alternative being to relock the bootloader, flash the RUU, and start from square 1. If you're S-OFF, you just name the new file "PG86IMG.zip", stick it in your SD card, and reboot into the bootloader. I have a RUU flashing guide (you can find it linked in the All Things Root guide sticky) that shows the process.

Now I feel like I made the right choice with s-off..

The file doesn't exist, yet. I'm talking in the future when/if/when HTC/VM updates the phone with new firmware/radios, a RUU will be released into the wild and the phone devs will extract the radios and such files out of it into flashable zip files for S-OFF people. At least, I'd hope they would. You would then download this file (when it comes into existence) and flash it to update your phone without unrooting and taking OTAs.

S-OFF > S-ON in that regard. S-ON will not allow unsigned radio files to be flashed. Which HTC only has the key to sign files properly, and they only output the RUU.

its personal choice. s-off as is lets you flash kernels from recovery. installing the modified hboot allows you to do many low level things. So unless you are going to be repartitioning your phone or flashing radios or stuff like that i don't see a reason to

root and htc unlock are the only requirements for the s-off procedure so yup...
