Help [VZW] Have a Nexus? Having one-way audio issues? Tell us where you are

Southern California, I don't think I've had the issue, however I only do about 400-500 minutes a month talk time. I wonder how many people in those clustered areas don't have the problem? What is unique about the way each phone communicates to a tower, that would make it a tower & device specific issue (one that doesn't affect other types of devices on the same tower)?

I've had a problem with echo, esp on speaker phone, where one or more parties have their own voice echoing back to them, not sure if it has ever happened simultaneously. If I have ever experienced one-way muting, it has only been for a split second...

I live in the San Francisco bay area and have had no problems at home (launch day Nexus, rooted, 4.0.4 ROM). However, in a recent trip to Burney, Ca (near Redding) I had the one-way issue on 3 consecutive calls. I blame the towers.

When is Verizon going to fess up to this and realize it's a tower+nexus issue? I think we're all screwed. I doubt they're going to invest much time/effort/money into fixing it since they have new phones coming out and the Nexus isn't one of their precious droids. If this were happening to this extent for Razr* people, I bet THEN VZW would do something about it.

I got off of the phone with verizon technical support today.....the lady told me that she would put in a work order to have the local towers checked. She agreed that the problem(one way mic) did not seem to be hardware and was probably network/tower. She advised me to dial ###send after any call that gets the one way mute....so they can track the call and see where it hits possible problems. I am not holding my breath but this is the farthest that I have gotten with verizon even making any attempt to resolve an issue. (PS: the tech I talked to had no idea about tired data so I pointed her to articles about the verizon CFO "spilling the beans" Verizon CFO: Unlimited Data Plans Going Away, All Users Pushed Onto Shared Data – Droid Life)

This is not just a Nexus issue. My wife has had it happen with her Razr MAXX. A couple of times in the house and also in her car. We live in Fort Collins, CO. And that's why I never took their offer to send me a new Nexus or any other phone. It's a network/4G issue in my opinion. I've been in Phoenix, Las Vegas and San Antonio in the past 6 months and never had the issue.

I had 4.0.4 for a week then the mic mute happened yesterday. In fact the entire phone call was garbled.

We've discussed this and even though we have a lot of family with Verizon (i.e. free Verizon to Verizon calls) it's almost to the point of asking them to let me out of the contract so we can switch. Their customer support has not been good on this. Half the techs don't know what I'm talking about. And the last one said there was a known issue with the network in our area for the past few weeks. I've had this problem since January.

Funny thing is they have one of those Verizon 3rd party stores here. And in that shopping center there is no coverage at all. I don't even get 3G in that center and the phone doesn't get a signal at times either.

It seems to be affecting many more nexus people than other phones. I found a few small threads about it for the razr, but nothing like the number of reports here for the nexus.

Makes me wonder if it's a tower issue that manifests with a weak signal area? Perhaps the razr doesn't get as many reports because its radio is holding better?

All I know is I'm getting fed up with it, and I hardly make phone calls. If I actually used it as a phone very often I'd probably have fired it through a window by now. :p

I'm not saying that it isn't network/tower related, but I was in Denver last week and had full bars with a signal of -70 dBm and it happened to me. So I wouldn't say weak signal is a part of it.

I wonder how many are having the problem that are using 3G only. I know that we are talking about different radios used for calls and data, but perhaps the "upgrades" done to bring 4G in some areas are messing with things.

I've been following this issue for months and I've determined that after asking for several people's locations that are having this issue you will find that there are major areas/hubs in the U.S. that suffer from horrible mic cut out/one way audio issues.. Furthermore I should add that if you get screeching, chirping, feedback, people saying you sound robotic or underwater, popping or crackling in the earpiece I believe this all falls under the same issue

Minnesota
North Carolina
South Carolina
California (Northern California more specifically)
Colorado
North Dakota
Pennsylvania
A couple varied eastern states

I'm sure the samsung radios are probably garbage however, I'm almost convinced that this is most definitely a regional issue with towers/hardware who knows... Almost impossible to get Verizon to listen to me seeing as I'm just a lowly customer who couldn't possibly know anything

It would be helpful going forward if people could at least confirm that they are in one of the states mentioned above or if you live in a different state and have the issue

Also would help if you could provide who your service is under GSM (AT&T) or CDMA (Verizon) or CDMA (Sprint)

I've had the problem since getting the phone when it came out. I live in Little Rock, Arkansas, former HQ of ALLTEL. A little while back, I unlocked and rooted my phone to try ROM's to see if it fixed the issue. I settled on LiquidSmooth and it has been great. I thought it had fixed the problem. BUT, over the last week, the issue has resurfaced with a vengeance. I've wanted to toss my phone out the window several times. I would love to exchange it for a Razr Maxx but based on what I'm reading, good luck. Also, exchanging it for a new Nexus seems to be a waste of time. My contract date runs out in October and that can't arrive quick enough.

I just sent my second replacement GN back to Verizon because it also had the muting issue (big surprise). Now they're offering me a Razr Maxx as a replacement, but I'm still trying to decide whether or not to take that deal. I love the GN other than its failing to be a functional phone. I thought about asking them for a S3 instead, but I'm now gun shy with Samsung phones :(

I had the issue again the other day and enough was enough. I called Verizon and told them that 4.0.4, as suspected, did NOT fix the issue for me. I said we need to come to a resolution, now. I can't have a phone that doesn't perform reliably as a phone. The tech support (not CSR) guy checked a few things and said that while Verizon still lists this as an issue, Samsung no longer lists this as an issue with the phone. He asked me what he could do to help, and I said send me a new Nexus. NOT a refurb, new. Said he would if he could, but can't. He offered to put me in a Razr Maxx so I accepted. It should be here next week. He said if I don't like the Razr Maxx I could send it back no harm, no foul.

I hate to give up on the Nexus but I just can't take it anymore.

Let us know if you are able to get a S3 as a replacement. I love the GN and I have had intermittent one way muting since I got the phone on 12-16-11 (day after release) and I would consider an S3 swap.

Let me know what you think of the Razr Maxx. I'm thinking that this is where I'm headed too if my current or "new" Nexus start giving me trouble

Oddly enough, I have not had the problem since Verizon agreed to send me a new Nexus.

Maybe my current Nexus is afraid.

Hmm, I just had a thought... How bad is Verizon that your phone is not afraid enough of you to constantly test YOUR patience, but is of the possibility of going back to Verizon?

;)

Yup, sure will. I was thinking about you after I posted that, as I know you're in a similar situation, so to speak. I'll let you know how it is. I figured it can't be that bad, especially since the Razr is getting ICS (supposedly) in a few weeks.

FYI, my brother-in-law who lives in Greensboro which is ~2 hours from me, has confirmed he's had the one-way audio issue as well. He's only has his Nexus for a few weeks.
