Kies Downloading New Firmware

One of my phones is not updated and when I click on the check for update it says there is nothing available.

The OTA is a staggered update that is going on through June 22. You won't see it as an OTA until you're in the next group it is staggered to. I have no idea how they decide who gets it next. With T-Mobile, probably a coin toss.

My comment was directed more toward the fact that OTA update means I do not have to plug my phone to the computer to get it. On my Evo when I was on sprint the update was available for everyone starting day one the point was that the popup that would notify you that the update is ready did not come until sprint decided to send it to you.

You could still go to the options and check for HTC update and find oud that there is an update available and it will give you the option. That was all.

Hey guys. I'm very new here, so I hope I'm posting in the right place. Kies today suggested I download the new update and I tried, but when it was around halfway done it stopped and said it could not finish upgrading. Then Kies instructed me to do a "firmware emergency recovery", which i tried several times. Each time it would get to around 94% then say "Firmware emergency stopped due to SGH-T989 error". My phone is stuck on a screen that states as follows:

"ODIN MODE
Product name: SGH-T989
Custom Binary Download: NO
Current Binary: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL

(THEN A YELLOW TRIANGLE WITH AN EXCLAMATION POINT)

(Under that it reads)
Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again"
----------------------
Which I have done several times of course. Also tried holding volume buttons and power, but everything keeps ending up at the same screen on my phone. Can't seem to master reset or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Can you get to recovery mode? Hold both volume buttons and power, let go of power when it vibrates, keep holding volume. If so, try wipe data/factory reset. Then wipe cache. Reboot and see if that helped.

If you are still stuck n the Odin screen, you can download this file. It is the update in a format you can flash with Odin. Unzip it in a folder on your PC. You want to use the file in the zip. Follow the instructions here for using Odin to root the phone. You won't be rooting but the process is the same. You don't need to download any of the other files except Odin. If things go well you can stop after step #9. Close Odin, unplug your phone power off and reboot.

This exact thing happened to me when I was updating my phone. I did notice that the bar stopped at 94% and I got the same message. What I did was unplug my phone from the USB cable, plugged it back in, then went into Kies and selected Emergency Firmware Recovery. Now I'm not recommending this per say, because from what I know I took a risk by unplugging my phone, but I am telling you my scenario to give a input. After I selected the emergency firmware recovery for the third time, it worked for me.

If for some reason you can't select Emergency Recovery in Kies try this.

Start Kies and go to Tools> Firmware upgrade and initialization. Enter the device S/N (found on the label below the battery), the Model name (SGH-T989), then select OK. You go through a few screens stating what is going to happen and asking if you want to proceed. Once you select OK, the next screen will be to download firmware upgrade components.

After this finishes it takes you get to the next screen stating that it is for Firmware emergency recovery. Now, follow the steps provided to proceed with the emergency recovery. This will tell you how to switch the phone to recovery mode.

I was rooted and running stock ROM and had no problem. I don't know anyone who had a problem due to being rooted. I just rerooted after with Odin the same way we did before. If you are running a different ROM other than stock, yes you will probably need to go back to stock.

I updated with Kies. People at XDA have also updated with Odin and that .tar file I posted a link to and it seemed to work fine.

Hmm that is good news. As for the new update I like it - seems my battery is getting quite a bit more time and the lock screen is much much nicer. Also when someone is calling me I don't need to swipe the screen 5 times to answer the phone but just once and say "yellow" :)

I actually got this OTA the other day and I said 'yes' to the update. The phone rebooted itself and I found myself at the Clockwordmod Recovery screen. I didn't know what to do and just selected the 'reboot' option. I then went into the file manager to see if there was an update.zip or anything but I couldn't find it.

I just loaded up Kies and saw that I didn't get the update. So here's one case in the wild where rooting breaks the update process. The phone is too lowly charged to do the update via Kies.

Any idea how I can get the stock bootloader or install this update? I'm worried that rooting broke up the update process. It seems like the update process relies on the stock bootloader to run their update package.

Go to the bottom of this OP and download the stock rom for your phone. Unzip and install it using Odin. You will be unrooted and complete stock.

You should try using Kies first. I don't know anyone that was rooted that had a problem if they were running a stock rom.

Yep, Kies worked! I have the new update. Phone seems a bit snappier now. I really hope they fixed the issue where the phone is almost never on standby. I get that pretty frequently.

Does tmobile even produce a bugfix report? Have they given us a date for ICS? I hate how secretive android updates from carriers are.

I am enjoying the changes in the updated GB. Still just as silky smooth as before and I could not care less about "scrollable wallpaper." A minor sacrifice for bug fixes is well worth the update.

As far as ICS. I am certain that it's coming and I will welcome it to my SGS II but I don't get all the impatience over the new OS. The SGS II running GB is one of the top 2 or 3 Android phones ever. It is nicer than any iphone IMO. So I am enjoying it.

I share this view completely. I have one ICS running device and it is good but I have to say that I use my phone as a phone first and as internet music and navigation and all the other features it has next. ICS will be nice but the phone works and the internet works so I am very happy with it.

hi Atmazzz and all, my GS2 hasT989UVKL1 baseband 2.6.35.11, rooted with odin recovery-cmw-hercules.tar. I have not yet tried to remove any bloatware, just rooted a few days ago. Are you saying I do not need to unroot, just use kies or odin to update, and use the same process as before to root? Would you wait for ICS in a week before rooting it? Also, currently, the battery drains within about 4 hours of normal use. How much has your battery improved with this update?

Thanks in advance for advice.

Cool

No need to unroot. You will just lose root with the update. Check to see if you have the update ready for OTA. Settings > Software Update at the bottom. Or just use Kies.

If it was me I would just wait to reroot. Although its easy enough to do if you want to do it now and again after ICS.

This update did help my battery some. I don't use it much during the day at work and I have about 75% left when I get home. After the update I have about 83%. If I was constantly surfing the net and such it probably wouldn't last 5 or 6 hours.

Same thing just happened to me. I was trying to update my wife's phone today to 2.3.6 from the stock firmware on her US T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 and now the phone is stuck in ODIN Mode. I followed the instructions from Kies and now I cannot get past the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." Not sure where to go from here and whether or not I can restore her phone without losing all of her pics, movies, contacts, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated.
