I have been reading these threads for some time now. I have even asked for help on here and I even got some. The update saga is truly comical. I bought my droid back in November and I was really blown away with it. I still am. Yes, I am having certain issues with it from time to time but I tend to muddle through them and end up better for it.

Yes I love bells and whistles and I am sure that the new update will provide some of those. but I would be willing to say that within a day or so after the eventual update that this forum will be chatting away about the next one.

No, my phone is not "rooted" I am amused by the teckies on this forum who love to brag they are "rooted" and how they are so excited about.

First and foremost my droid is a phone and to be honest it works pretty damn good.... with or without an update

I hear ya, I have never overly enthusiastic about rooting, but I was disappointed yesterday by the lack of an ota. I re-rooted last night with DM Updater...and it's great, really. My phone is faster, I really like the Polar Clock wallpaper, the Gallery is nice, and I'm liking the mt in the browser. Also, I have 5 screens with Helix; there just really isn't a downside to rooting as long as you read about it first so you know what you're doing. I'm not trying to convince you or anything, just pointing out that you don't have to be some type of root zealot to try it out. Honestly, a guy like me never had a chance; I can't know that rooting is out there and not try it...

First, not everyone that is rooted is a "teckie". I'm far from a teckie and I'm rooted and ROM'ed. Thus, anyone can do it.

Second, I don't think that everyone who talks about the benefits of rooting is bragging. They are doing just that: discussing the benefits of rooting. Because, believe it or not, there are some definite, tangible pros to rooting and while a stock Droid is an awesome device, rooting adds some much appreciated enhancements. For example, I'm running Pete's latest ESE53-based 2.1 ROM and as a result I have a browser that scrolls and multitouch-zooms PERFECTLY with no lag or glitchiness. Also, there is basically zero lag with the keyboard (thus, typing long, drawn-out replies like this from my Droid is now a lot easier and quicker). I have speech-to-text capabilities on my keyboard. The 2.1 gallery is vastly superior to the stock gallery. I've got live wallpapers. These are just some of the benefits of rooting and while it may sound like I'm bragging, that's not the case. I, and other rooters like me, are so thrilled by the advantages of rooting and would like others to enjoy them if they so choose. If you choose not to root, it's no big deal to us but it would be selfish to keep everything to ourselves by not "bragging" about the awesomeness that rooting and ROMing bring. By the way, I can promise you that rooting and ROMing are not as hard as you think just as long as you do your research, take the appropriate cautions and follow directions.

One more thing. "Rooting" is not illegal or immoral. As a matter of fact Google has no problem with it. Motorola and Verizon on the other hand do have a problem with it hence the "voided" warranty.

My Droid is a phone, a GPS, web browser, camera, camcorder, and about 101 other things. That's the way it was advertised, that's how it was presented, that's what sold me, that's what I bought.

I rooted, and love it even more. Rooting actually enhanced most of it's stock features, fixed a few things that should have already worked, and added some nice things that's not available to stock users.

And yes, I also have a phone. It's in the attic. It's got a push-button keypad that lights up, and it's also an answering machine. If I dust it off and plug it in, it may still work. I don't use it anymore. It's just a phone.

It's in a cardboard box, next to a black and white TV and an old Tandy computer.

I don't understand the anti-rooting crowd.More times than not when someone mentions a benefit of rooting there are at least a couple who chime in and poo poo the idea. Fear drives a lot of people I guess.

I intend to remain stock as long as possible but I don't care what other people do to their phone.

I am guessing that they poo poo rooters because:

• They have an issue with their stock phones that they want to solve through means provided to them through official updates and the like and people announcing that the issue doesn't affect rooters just clogs the conversation.
• They feel that they derail even the smallest issue into an expose of how great it is to root the phone and it devolves into a comparison of rooted ROMs that have a tenuous connection to the original topic to begin with.
• There are probably other reasons but I don't understand those.

When these updates stop coming, I'll start rooting. Right now, Motorola & Verizon are being paid to support my phone and I am going to get my money's worth.

I don't mind the rooting discussion in the midst of official software discussion, but it is probably only because I can find a use for it. The people who get upset by so much offtopic discussion see no value in it and feel that their time is being wasted.

what updates are you speaking of?? have I missed something?? I rooted and rommed cause I could, that simple..plus after THOROUGHLY reading first there is no real risk

Instead, it starts out as a bitchfest from a guy (presumably) who loves his phone but doesn't like the way others love their phones. Then it morphs into a stupid threadiquette smack-down by a bunch of elitist jackasses who think all too highly of themselves because they can spell well. (...ironically confused by simple instructions on how to root a phone, but they can spell really well. Go figure.)

Yes, I agree that this thread is somewhat asinine and I hate to add fuel to the fire but I have to address this. Stock users complain about rooters because we always come into threads discussing the virtues of rooting. However, the only reason we do this is because stock users complain about the 2.1 OTA delays (which they should) and we come in to offer the ONLY viable solution to their woes at this time (ROOTING... or buying a motorcycle) and they get upset because we talk about rooting. We're only trying to help.
