Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

hi all,
I have a 2.3.5 htcevo4g and I've been trying to boot it using my macbook (I don't have access to a pc where I can run this process)
I'm trying the htcdev method but either I'm not using the correct commands on terminal or something's wrong (meanwhile I e-mailed htcdev and they replied saying htc evo4g is Not supported)
I simply cannot get the identifier token when I type in the command. until then everything seems fine.
I'll be glad if somebody can help me out

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
in order for adb to work on a mac you will need to do some additional steps. here is the guide you will need: [GUIDE] Using ADB & FASTBOOT in OSX / Mac - xda-developers. you will need to setup adb as well as fastboot.

Thank you, I've been following for a while but recently became a member.

I actually downloaded, set up and updated adb and got the fastboot. But in case i'm missing something i'll read the thread thoroughly tonight.
Thank you!

just rooted my Evo with a cracked screen. I used the first method and it was a breeze. I also use the ROM you recommended at the end of the first method. Looks good so far. I will root my replacement Evo tomorrow now that I know I was able to do it on the busted on. A million thanks!

Glad you got it going. Hopefully the 2nd time around goes just as smoothly for you!:D

Initially, I did have some problems. I decided to delete all the files I downloaded and start fresh. I took my time and paid very close attention to the details in the write-up. I unlocked the phone one night and then finished it off last night. So far (only 12 hours in) I REALLY like the ROM recommended. I also like the fact that my phone doesnt take 10 minutes to reboot and I can use the Hotspot feature. :D

Just rooted my new Evo. The first one seemed to go a little better. I kept getting an error when I was trying to make the nandroid back-ups. I also missed a step which seemed to prolong things. I got it done and running the mik ROM. So far, so good.....

nice!!!!!!!!!!!!! glad it worked out for you.

let us know if you need help or have questions.

I've been trying to root my evo for some time now. I was using the HTCdev method. The email that i receive from them is in a BIN file. when i try to follow the next step in the command promt, it doesnt find the file. Can someone help me with this

is the .bin file in the android folder? it should work if you have it in the right folder. also you need to make sure that your phone is still in fastboot.

hey guys thanks for the help with this so far, I'm using the HTCdev method and did everything the same and was in the final process of trying to download the MikG v3.11 with it as was suggested. Now I'm on the last step and I did the wipe that was suggested and installed the Mik .zip but idk whats happening, its saying it will restart but it keeps going to the bootloader screen no matter what, I can't get it to just turn on. I'm very new with this stuff so I could be completely missing something simple but I have no idea whats going on, my phone is just stuck and I dont know if its like dead or whats up. Thanks in advance for help

Yeah, i had it in the right folder, the phone was in fastboot usb, is that right or wrong?

when you select fastboot in the bootloader, the menu will change to usb fastboot as one of the selections. if you see that then you are in fastboot.

what exactly does it say when you use the fastboot command?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!
are you sure that you have the entire length of the token copied correctly. it needs to include the arrows:
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>
and end with:
<<<<<Identifier Token End>>>>>

thanx and your team is younger i beleive and they are built similarly so we should face each in the playoffs for quite some time now. i almost lost my job because i kept missing work to watch the finals and celebrate at the parade. lol

Thanks and thank you for the quick response! I tried to respond last night but it kept telling me the servers were down. You are completely right with what you said by the way, I got the update and not the full wipe because I thought the full wipe was just another wipe .zip like you had on this site so I ignored it lol. I'm at work so I will be trying to do it again when I get home.

Just another couple quick questions: To get my phone functioning so that I would have one for work today, I restored my nandroid backup, so should I just redo all of the 3rd step to get that mikG to work? Also, is it acceptable to just mount my phone as a disk drive and drag the two .zip files there for that last step or should I be downloading that AF flasher program? Thanks again for the help, total noob with this stuff for right now

yes you will need to do step 3 again. and yes it is acceptable to transfer files that way.

and we were all noobs once, so do not feel bad about it. here is a great guide for you to read:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. just skip the rooting process and go to the after root section. it has a ton of info that you should know about.
