Car Navigation: Department of Redundancy Department

Amen my friend. I think that is the next step in auto entertainment/navigation. I think a few are already working on it too. Unfortunately, the iPhone is winning out here, (BMW comes to mind). However with as big as the screens are getting on phones, its almost to the point where I would just like a centrally located dock. Make it an option, but something more integral to the car, as opposed to a dock hanging from the windshield (which I can't stand).

Mostly because it's easier to support iOS devices. Every year Apple comes out with one iPhone, one iPod Touch (sometimes they even skip this) and one iPad. That means there's only a limited number of devices and form factors you need to support.

There are way too many Android devices available with different form factors, different microUSB port location, etc and Android phone manufacturers release 3 or more models every year. There's no standard similar to AirPlay and not all phones have HDMI output.

Imho, Google and Android phone manufacturers should band together to create a standard for this. Otherwise, I don't really see car manufacturers switching to or at least adding support for Android smartphones instead of just the iPhone/iPod/iPad.

Also we have enough with peeps driving and texting already, can you see them also driving down the road and watching a big screen at the same time, LOL I think we have enough issues IMO;)

Very fair point.

I hate it when I see people talking let alone texting while driving. But navigation and radio are at least slightly different in my estimation.

Mark Twain once said "fighting progress is like fighting the sunrise." So I fear that we're stuck with in care technology.
