Can anyone give it in a nutshell why Apple won this injunction? Thank you.

From FOSS Patents: Apple wins U.S. preliminary injunction against the Samsung/Google Galaxy Nexus over Siri patent:

Apple and its lawyers convinced Judge Koh that the Galaxy Nexus likely infringes all four of the patents asserted in the preliminary injunction motion, and that all four of them are likely valid.

and

Apple's motion passed that test with respect to the "Siri patent", a patent on unified search. It must be a huge disappointment for Google to lose this lawsuit over a search patent. With respect to the other three patents at issue in this context -- slide-to-unlock, data tapping and autocorrect --, Judge Koh was not convinced that those features drive consumer demand and that Samsung's likely infringement causes irreparable harm. But Apple can still win an injunction when this case goes to trial, and even if it couldn't prove an entitlement to injunctive relief over those patents at that stage, Samsung would be liable for significant damages.

So I'm guessing its all about the patents related to "Siri" (voice search, etc.).

And given the countless billions of cash Apple have socked away I wouldn't imagine it would be hard for them to come up it.

Bit like asking us to come up with $20 really...

I disliked Apple before, now I'm really beginning to hate them. I had hoped Tim Cook would back off from this ridiculous jihad Steve Jobs started up against Google but it seems like more of the same rhetoric and bull from 'gods own phone company'. Sigh.... :banghead:

Besides, doesn't Siri use WolframAlpha behind the scenes?

I agree completely!

On that same note, if Apple is so "holier than thou", why are they so worried about some little company from Korea?

Wouldnt that be like Bentley spending all their time trying to sue Hyundai?

I remember reading a quote attributed to Steve Jobs where he basically stated stealing ideas from other people is OK. Apparently someone else stealing the same ideas is wrong though.

Apple must know that there are three sorts of buyers in the world -

1. The Apple Fanboi that will buy anything made by them.

2. Customers who have a choice and like Apple because their friends have them but might be tempted by something different if it looked snazzier and cheaper than an Isomething.

3. People in the rest of the world (for example, Asia) where it's Android first and foremost because they're cheap and Apple for those foolish to drop the extra bucks on something seen to be an extravagant symbol of the Western world.

The first group of users are Apples acolytes - and drink and breath the company cool aid. They'll never touch a Google phone less they can have a big gob of Hand Sanitizer afterwords (and probably an anti-rabies shot as well).

It the second group that Apple are scared off - the potential converts who, upon seeing the sheer variety of the competition and the fact they can pretty much do was an iPhone equally as well, if not better, might decide no to a $400 4s and yes to a slightly cheaper S3.

The third group Google have sewn up - we'll, not so much Google in this case, more like the OS does.

So Apple figures the longer they can delay the second group they may keep looking at iCrap. But eventually this will fail. It has to...

There are actually 2 other groups - one is made up of Droiders who are very happy playing with a os and ecosystem that allows them to express themselves however they want, and then there's everybody else - those who really don't care as long as their phone calls Uncle Joe, plays Angry Birds and allows them to send the odd SMS or thousand and they'll not care who, what or where about the phone, the OS or how many cores are inside of it.

This is actually pathetic, does this judge even know what she's doing? Pretty much all Androids have the unified search feature and slide to unlock, so why only the Galaxy Nexus? Because its the biggest threat with Jelly Bean of course :/ I can't wait to see what Android will do to Apple when they release the iPhone 5, its more than likely a redesign and some manufacturer will have a patent getting them back.

That's why Apple never innovate much in each of the generations of iPhone, they are hiding in hole from the patents xD

That is not a very good analogy. Especially since Samsung makes many of the components for apple.

Comparing Bentley and Hyundai to Apple and Samsung is VERY DIFFERENT.
I think in terms of quality both companies are top notch.

I agree, I liked apple products before all this patent frenzy. I think the android systems will take over and people at apple are very anxious about it.

What is up with using a Korean American Judge???

was that done on purpose??

If so, that is a cheap way to play the game.

I can expect that from the Chinese, but Americans behaving like that is not good.

Aside from the fact that i'm going to law school soon, i think it isn't fair.

Why don't they sue HTC or other Smartphone Manufacturers?? If Samsung was really copying everything Apple was doing, i wouldn't have a problem. I think this is a unfair marketing ploy.

Having a general search function is not sufficient for a patent law suit. It is frivolous.

Google did not lose the lawsuit. This is a preliminary injunction. For the course of the lawsuit google will not be allowed to sell GNexi. Just in case apple loses the suit, they were asked to put around 70 million dollars up before the injunction takes affect.

Sure this is a loss in a particular motion, but not a loss in the entire lawsuit.

Why don't they sue HTC or other Smartphone Manufacturers??

They did try on the HTC One X, there was an embargo put into effect right before it shipped, or i think a little after, i cant remember.

and here's the reason why... because you can link your email contacts to your phone contacts name and number... and that was a patent infringement apparently... never held that long however, only for a week.

I seriously just want to smack Tim cook upside the head with my crapbook pro...

I sense a bit of jealousy from Apple on this one.

In the end, Android is better than Apple because of all the different options available and great developers out there. (in my opinion, of course)

Personally, I wouldn't like having an iPhone and seeing everyone else with one. I had a iPhone 3g when it first came out (when it was still cool). Nowadays, everyone and their momma has one. Even middle school kids have one. Kinda reduces the impact of it all to me. Apple was the early bird that caught the worm but now it seems people are realizing they have other choices and switching over to android. The iTunes store had people entranced for a while too, but now Google play has stepped it up. So yeah, sorry if I'm off subject.

Am I the only one that gets a disgusting feeling every time I hear an iPhone SMS tone go off when out in public? Seriously its infuriating!

So, does this mean it's illegal to own and carry a GNex? Better put it in your closet in a locked box, because the Apple Police, wearing trench coats, carrying an electronic GNex finder gadget will track you down on the streets and take it away from you and replace it with an IPhone 1st generation on 0G data service. Hide it now, while you still can :D:p

Do you guys think that after Google wins this stupid lawsuit they'll drop the price on the Nexus a little more because we had to wait a little longer to receive ours? That'd be amazing considering that I am trying to currently get one!

they just recently dropped the price so prob not any time soon unless they really wanna piss off apple and not to mention you can still buy a gnex at this moment so if you're currently trying to get one you can go get it today without any hassles
