Phone Call Contact Icons - Why still so ugly??

As far as I know, and please correct me, people, if I am wrong, but the pictures are resized so small because that is the size used for your contacts online.

When Google decides to bring larger pictures to the online versions of your contacts and stuff, and then provides an update to the Android OS, then I'm sure we'll start seeing higher quality contact photos while making or receiving calls.

So hurry up with that update, Google. We know you know that we know about it.

Erm.

This is the only part of the Android OS that I think looks terrible.

Seriously, a green and black gradient background with a small, pixelated picture in the middle? Really?

It boggles my mind that not a single person that tested Android 2.0+ said anything about this.

I understand that the poor quality picture probably has something to do with how pictures are stored in Google Contacts, but they should at least have the option of loading a picture from the SD card when you get a call.

I believe they come from the SD card if you choose contact pics from your SD card like I do, although the phone may temp store the crappy res contact pic on the internal mem. Therefore they would be pixelated and crap part for int. mem. space and so it's quick to come up on the screen when a call is received.

I could be way off, but I hope there is a fix or app at one point.

I really don't believe that it's Google. I just got rid of my HTC Eris and got the Droid about three weeks ago. The Eris caller id pics were beautiful, regardless if they were online ones or saved on the memory card or phone hd. the mirror effect was the icing on the cake. If the HTC keyboard can be ported over to the Droid (which I am using to type this), then I see no reason why the caller I'd feature can't be either. sense UI is already ported over to the Droid.

On the Eris, is the caller ID picture the entire background or is there still the green+black gradient background?

If you simply set you contact image from your SD card to correspond with your contact, your image will not appear pixelated.

Camera > Menu > Gallery > Long Press on Image of Choice > Scroll down to "Set As" > Contact Icon > "Select Contact" > Size Image > Save > Done.

As far as importing them from Google... Yes, they will be qualities of a terrible magnitude :)

Hope that helps.

By the way... this is only good for using pictures as contact icons from your camera.

I can't speak for the Eris, but on my Hero I've never noticed any green when receiving calls. The contact pic uses half or more of the screen and looks great. I use all pics linked to Facebook profiles.

The green+black gradient fills the background while the call is in progress. When you end a call, the gradient is red+black. When receiving the call, the gradient is grey+black.

Here is a picture of what I mean:

Notice the small square in the center with the android logo. That is where the picture of the caller appears (if you have a picture).

It would look so much nicer if the picture was full screen!

I didn't look at your pic, it wanted to download then needed me to pic a program to open it, I just cancelled.

I did call my phone from my wifes to get a good look. The pic is nearly 3/4 of the screen with the name and number, accept and decline buttons at the bottom, with just a black background. It actually looks really nice. It must have something to do with our Sense UI, everything is just prettier on the Hero/Eris.

Are you on your phone? What web browser are you using? I am using firefox and it opens up the .jpg right in the browser. Weird that it wanted you to download it.

On my home PC. It's an antique running Window's 2000 and an old version of IE.

Edit: On my phone now and looked at your pic. When you have a pic, it just replaces the Android? That doesn't look so bad. Ours is a little bigger pic in relation to the screen size, but not full screen.

I believe the screen resolution on the Hero/Eris is 320x480. The Droid is 480 by 854. There's less area to fill on the Hero/Eris, so the picture can be bigger. It also appears better quality, because the picture size and screen size are closer.

I hate to be the lone dissent, but I could care less about seeing any picture with my contacts. I wish there was an option to suppress them and give me other info instead.

For personal callers I find the picture to be ideal as it lets me quickly recognize who is calling. For work people, I simply set their contact pictures as our company logo so I always know immediately if its a work call (I also use a different ringtone so I know which calls to ignore after hours!).

If you want "other info" you could consider using other means of identifying callers by setting logos or text as the ID picture.
