I remember when we all got out phones the first week there were tons of "why the heck are my contact icons all grainy and pixelated" comments. Have I missed some type of fix for this, or have we just learned to live with it?
I really don't believe that it's Google. I just got rid of my HTC Eris and got the Droid about three weeks ago. The Eris caller id pics were beautiful, regardless if they were online ones or saved on the memory card or phone hd. the mirror effect was the icing on the cake. If the HTC keyboard can be ported over to the Droid (which I am using to type this), then I see no reason why the caller I'd feature can't be either. sense UI is already ported over to the Droid.
If you simply set you contact image from your SD card to correspond with your contact, your image will not appear pixelated.
Camera > Menu > Gallery > Long Press on Image of Choice > Scroll down to "Set As" > Contact Icon > "Select Contact" > Size Image > Save > Done.
As far as importing them from Google... Yes, they will be qualities of a terrible magnitude
Hope that helps.
On the Eris, is the caller ID picture the entire background or is there still the green+black gradient background?
I can't speak for the Eris, but on my Hero I've never noticed any green when receiving calls. The contact pic uses half or more of the screen and looks great. I use all pics linked to Facebook profiles.

The green+black gradient fills the background while the call is in progress. When you end a call, the gradient is red+black. When receiving the call, the gradient is grey+black.
Here is a picture of what I mean:

Notice the small square in the center with the android logo. That is where the picture of the caller appears (if you have a picture).
It would look so much nicer if the picture was full screen!
I didn't look at your pic, it wanted to download then needed me to pic a program to open it, I just cancelled.
Are you on your phone? What web browser are you using? I am using firefox and it opens up the .jpg right in the browser. Weird that it wanted you to download it.
I did call my phone from my wifes to get a good look. The pic is nearly 3/4 of the screen with the name and number, accept and decline buttons at the bottom, with just a black background. It actually looks really nice. It must have something to do with our Sense UI, everything is just prettier on the Hero/Eris.
I hate to be the lone dissent, but I could care less about seeing any picture with my contacts. I wish there was an option to suppress them and give me other info instead.
