MicroUSB SD Card reader?

The idea is to travel with just the Nexus and no laptop. I know that Apple makes an adapter so you can use SD cards with the iPad.....

You theoretically should be able to just use a full USB SD card adapter plugged into a USB OTG cable.

I was hoping to do the same thing on my motorcycle trip, but my crappy playbook didn't support that with the OS2.0 update, so I was boned.

Well either take the pics with your phone and upload or move sd card to a pc or laptop. Since the Nnexus 7 doesn't have a rest facing cam...this is probably the easiest and cheapest way.

Or spend <$10 and buy a USB OTG cable and use your existing USB SD card reader.

Who knows... maybe someone will make a MicroUSB SD Card reader since so many devices are supporting USB OTG, but I'd doubt it. Having a standard USB OTG cable is so much more flexible, and cheaper to manufacturer.

My DSLR takes better pictures than my phone could ever hope to. The idea is to take the tablet with me and leave the laptop at home.

Except, AFAIK, no one has gotten a Nexus to read a FAT32 card yet. I don't know too many people who have their SD Cards formatted to ext3. And again that requires a cable, a reader and rooting your tablet even if it would work. I am looking for an elegant solution.

Newegg.com - TOPRAM USB 2.0 SD SDHC High Speed Card Reader R3, support 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB capacity - Card Readers

along with either
6" cable

or

Direct adapter (although these seem flakier).

It's not as "elegant" as the camera card kit for the iPad, I will give you that. But it's not exactly unwieldy or difficult to stuff into a camera bag...

And I'm sure the Fat32 limitation will be fixed within 30 days of general availability. It wouldn't surprise me if it was actually addressed by one of the developers who has the device now BEFORE it starts shipping to customers.

Eh, 3.5 stars is too low of a rating. Especially when there are better alternatives
I bought this one for $1.49

I wish that google drive was able to let you access your computer more as a directory than just being a special folder. That way you wouldn't have to remember to drag files there.

Yeah dropbox was (Maybe still is the same way?) that way. I used to use a syncing program that would move everything to that would move every folder I wanted to a mirror folder in the main dropbox folder... I can't remember the darn name of it though.

As a traveling photographer, I had considered using my TF101 in place of a computer for backing up cards while on the road instead of my 17" laptop. I was once dreaming of having a smaller, lighter travel set-up. It was a great dream... until I realized it just wasn't practical for me. I love my TF101 and I'm sure I'll love my N7 but when I actually sat down and went through the logistics of it all, the TF kind of lost out. (Notice the kind of.)

On short domestic trips (which usually means flying) where I didn't need to "publish" while on the road, I realized that I didn't really need to back-up as I have more than enough cards on me. In this case, I take my TF101 with me to do email, web and entertainment but not for photo work itself.

On longer trips domestically or internationally, I do need to back up and I usually need to publish at some point. It's that last part that is the rub of it all. A tablet just can't handle my workflow at all. The software and under the hood necessities to get the job done just aren't there. (Now that I think of it, I need to go remove PS Touch from the list of apps I'm considering buying with the credit. I forgot how limited that app was now that I think back on it.) That's why I still lug my 17" laptop, mouse and two back-up drives with me wherever I go in the world. I can't wait for the day that tablets can pull off the workflow I need though. I think that's still a few years away and maybe set back more now that the files keep growing.

For now, it I want to show photos off. It isn't all that hard to load the photos onto my laptop and edit then load what I want to my tablet.

I'll agree with what someone else posted in this thread. Go buy a USB OTG cable and you're good to go. I am taking a trip this week with all my photo gear and my Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. I haven't tried it with my Canon 60D yet, but I tried plugging my wife's Sony point and shoot directly to the USB OTG cable on the Nexus 7 and I could access all photos on the camera. Should be able to do the same with the 60D. Just plug the camera directly to your Nexus via the USB OTG cable and you're good to go.

Did you or anyone actually prove that this works yet? I'm waiting for my second one to come in to game stop, since the first one crashed.

Hi,

I'm new to Nexus 7 and new to the forum but I thought I would point something out that I have a problem with which may be of interest to svt_gEEk.
I have a rooted Nexus and an OTG cable and that works fine with a USB stick. I connected a card reader with both a CF card from a Sony camera and also an SD Card from a Canon. The CF card was read and the pictures displayed ok from the Sony but I could not get the Nexus to read the SD card from the canon. I did also try the same SD Card in a separate USD to SD converter and again the Nexus did not see it.

I have not found a resolution yet, does any one have any thoughts on this ?

Just a word of advice, nothing about the cloud (or the internet lol) should ever be taken lightly. For better or for worse, online privacy is being infringed upon every day. It's a money hungry world out there, people want your info no matter what or where it is.

Instead of using the cloud, I highly recommend a method suggested by an Android Central user who goes by the name Moviecouple:

"I use the CloudFTP by Hyperdrive. It is a small device with a USB port that creates a wireless portable FTP server. I then just plug a micro 32GB thumb drive into the USB port. This device basically creates a personal FTP server that allows you to stream movies and music or move stuff in and off the FTP server to ANY device. I use it on my computers, Macs, Android devices... And it even works with my iPad and iPhone devices as well. You can use thumb drives and portable Hard Drives with it. That gives you Unlimited storage possibilities. It also works pretty much with all file types I've thrown at it too.

I had been looking for such a device for years. Looked at the Seagate Goflex Satellite and various others and the CloudFTP is hands down the best. Portable, small, and fast.

I personally needed a device that allowed to store movies, music, pictures, books, PDF's, Comics (CBR's & CBZ's) and Word/Excel documents that I could transfer stuff back and forth between it and all my devices... and this one does it all."
