Root Bionic Arrives Today, ready to get wet ;-)

Bionic should arrive in about an hour or so.

I'm preparing to amp it up and root it, then install the ICS 230 build that just came out.

I've downloaded the 230 update, and Razr's Edge for rooting.

*IF* the phone arrives and it's on 905, what are my steps to install 230?

And before I do any of that, I'm familiar with the SBF process on the Droid X, my understanding is things are a little different on the Bionic. Where can I get an image to restore if it all goes wrong, and how much of a chance of permanent bricking do I run?

There are step by step guides posted all over these forums and other Android sites. They come in handy whenever you are trying to do something new. (Not trying to be a jerk by pointing this out, but if you familiarize yourself with how to find and read the guides, you'll get much more accustomed to doing things on the Bionic than just getting a specific explanation to your question).

Root after going to ICS, not before.

If your phone arrives with 905, just put the zip folder for ICS 230 onto your external SD card.

Directions:
You have to be on Stock .905 and flash the .zip through STOCK RECOVERY (not CWM).
- Hold Volume up + down + Power Button
- Use volume down to get to recovery, then Volume up to select
- Once at the exclamation, press both Volume buttons at the same time
- choose update from sd card
- Congrats, you're now flashing ICS on your DROID Bionic

If you need to restore you'll need the program RSDLite, plus make sure you have the newest Motorola drivers installed on your PC, and then just Google "Bionic 902 FXZ" and you'll find various downloads and guides on how to do it.

It's kind of hard to brick the phone beyond what can be repaired with a fresh FXZ flash so you don't have to worry too much. Make sure your battery is fully charged before you start flashing things and that you are using an official Motorola USB cable and you should be fine.

If it shows up with 905 installed already all you would need to do is put the ics zip on your sd card and boot into stock recovery and install. If not and it's on 902 install the 905 ota then ics.

It's pretty much the same as is was with the Droid X but they call it a fxz now instead of a sbf. You still flash it with rsd lite. Hope that helps and enjoy your new phone.

Just a note, there is a good chance your Bionic will show up without a ext SD card depending on where you ordered it from.

Weird issue--I am trying to apply the ICS 230 zip file as an update, it then tries to run its initial stuff and then says aborting installation. I opened it up on my computer, theres another zip file inside with 905 in the filename. I downloaded it from the link in another thread(in post 14 on the other forum, if that helps at all).

you need to unzip the first file and put the second zip file on your sd card, it's just the way this build got distributed by a lot of download links.
