I don't know the difference between Android 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 so I've been performing a bit of research. According to a Wikipedia article, moving from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 gets us:

System enhancements:
  • Improved Gmail application
  • Shadow animations for list scrolling
  • Camera software enhancements
  • Improved battery efficiency
  • Fixed a voice search bug

There are also some improvements for specific handsets, but I'm just listing the general Android improvements. I'm really digging the current OpenVitality ROM but I think I'll be giving this a ride pretty soon! :)

Flashed this with no issues. I'll post if I have any troubles... I know there's not a lot of us Vitality users around, or at least that post thanks, but I definitely appreciate your work, man. :)

Are there any major differences between the 2.3.4 and the 2.3.6? Should we really notice anything? Any bumps in improvements are hugely appreciated...

Hoping we can get an OC'd kernal or something at some point. Req's kernel only works with the Admire stuff and flashing that leaves us without data.

EDIT: First thing I've noticed is that ringtones/notifications are extremely loud. Even on the lowest setting they're quite obnoxious.

I'll look into it. Cleaning my aquariums atm so it'll be a few hrs.

Can someone check power off, reboot and recovery power menu as well -- I noticed an odd bug in where it wouldnt reboot or power off for that matter when the option was confirmed (noticed it while I was playing around with services.jar for CRT ON animations).

Cheers :)

Potential Problems

1. For the first startup, the animation disappeared for a long time and the screen was blank, for that initial startup you need something there to indicate its in progress, or keep the first animation going longer. I almost thought something was wrong and was going to flash again.

2. When I first opened Mobile AP it force closed. It was fine in all subsequent attempts. I was in airplane mode in the first instance and had turned it off at the second attempt and turned it back on in the third attempt, related????

3. This was odd. When you pull down the notifications bar while it is media scanning it slows down considerably???? or is it me going mad???? media scanner speed although much faster than 2.3.4 was sometimes not consistent.

4. Was wondering around this morning listening to some music and during this process the music stopped once and the volume increased, this would be the first time that has happended to me while having it in my pocket, a bug or accidental button touching???

Your working on this but ill post it anyhow.
4. Wont shutdown, reboot, or go into recovery. Sticks on blank screen after animation is complete. Now im only guessing here but i think you dont have enough images to complete the animation script/ code which may be set to 36 you have 26, so unless you add more images or alter the source/ script, it will stick. Im not sure why but on some roms it will stick when you do this while on others you can alter them and it wont, not sure why though.

5. Cant turn on bluetooth in airplane mode through settings but you can from the power control, never seen that before.

6. Wheres all the static wallpapers from stock, you can remove the muse ones but include the others.

7. No folder options to create or add an exisiting app based folder. Maybe I dont have any apps that use that installed at the moment.

Dislikes

I dont like the openvitality icon in the notifications bar and those grey lines if you added them, their ugly, was making feel nauseous last night and its really beginning to annoy me already lol o) You can sell yourself in the about phone section. Maybe its these that are slowing down the media scanning, when its semi-pulled down.

2. Stock camera still shuts down at 15% battery, I use Camera ICS anyhow. Ive seen some solutions to this online before, I think you need to open up the apk.

Likes

1. I like most of this build but particularly, the startup and shutdown animations, good combo. Incidentally where is the start up animation stored?

Other comments relating to GPS/ Sensors.

1. The GPS has a variable fix unlike stock EH29 which was constant, obviously this ROM doesnt resolve my long standing gps wont restart issue lol o)

2. This rom includes those updated or improved sensor files that I mentioned previously resulting in compass/ google maps activities not gettting stuck in the horizontal axis.

system/lib/hw/sensors.default.so

2.3.4 (EH29 stock) 38.22k
2.3.6 86.20k

3. Although its pre-configured well already, if its possible I would still like to see the DSP settings app installed or is this for later OS releases?

4. Quickpic is still my preferred photoviewer

Didnt they post an MMS fix for MeteroPCS 2.3.6 update???

Fixing MMS (Send & Receive)

Overall I have to say that its probably the best non-2.3.4 build out there, as the kernel has been maintained everything works.

Looking forward to beta 2.

Fixing MMS (Send & Receive)

Overall I have to say that its probably the best non-2.3.4 build out there, as the kernel has been maintained everything works.

Looking forward to beta 2.

Thanks for the feedback.

Let me answer a few of the comments in sequence.

Potential problems:

1) The startup disappearing is directly related to the bootanimation hack.
I have the animation set to an infinite loop, but it doesn't want to play infinitely for some reason. Unfortunately there will be nothing done about this, as the hack is not my work. =\

2)Keep testing out the Mobile AP m8. This is good stuff. I havent tested it in depth myself yet, as I've been busy making fixes and building the ROM.

3)That is an odd bug. I have not experienced it personally. Media scanning is a bitch regardless. I was actually going to pose a poll once this goes stable to see if people would want the media scanner removed. I mean, if you keep all your pics/media/music in the designated android folders, it still auto caches -- media scanner is responsible for picking out media from your sdcard as a whole, not from specific folders.

4)Most likely you hit a button in your pocket that increased the volume. As for the music stopping, Im not too sure. I've never had that happen -- and thats one feature that I have been testing daily, as I use my phone at work as a music player.
If it can be reproduced multiple times with a variety of mp3's we'll have to address it.

5) Hahaha about turning on bt regardless of airplane mode. You are _not_ suppose to be able to use bt with airplane mode on. haha. I'll have to look into that once mms is solved. In the meantime, just to avoid errors, just dont turn on bt through power control when airplane mode is on.

6)With this stock generic build, the wallpapers were not present. I feel no need to add them really.

7)That is Holo Launcher Limitation (no folder options). Install a 3rd party launcher (ADW for instance) for those options. Im not _too_ sold on Holo Launcher the more I mess with it, but it _is_ quite fast on our systems for the options that it does have. I may change it in the future.

Dislikes:

OpenVitality text always stays. ;) It will be updated with revision numbers. Just how I do it. ;)
I'll look into other notification backgrounds -- I can see what you mean with the lines, although I like them personally.

Havent gotten around to the camera fix as of yet. On the to-do list. :)

I'll look into dsp apk, although you can just install a 3rd party dsp mgr if you wish.

MMS fix was for MetroPCS specific phones. Im working on an MMS fix now, but it will take some time to figure out how to apply the patch to the ROM.

Thanks for the feedback, I hope I've answered some of the questions to your liking. :)

~Cheers.

Ill have to look at number 5 when i get back on stock, i thought airplane mode deactivated everything when activated but was overidable on a chip by chip basis afterwards.

I would be up for mesia scanner being removed as long as it doesnt affect performance, Im sure i have deactivated before by removing a file but it caused all sorts of other problem maybe would test a separate release with it removed and give you some feedback.

where are the wallpapers stored?

I like Holo launcher some of those options appear to be in plus, ive requested some of these options from them already so who knows. Its much quicker, agreed.

I've ran this for about 24 hours now with little to no issues outside of one. I'm not sure if this is something with the rom, but I went to sleep last night and left the phone on... When I woke it up this morning, I was able to pattern unlock like always, but after that the phone was unresponsive and would go into a dimmed state, as if I had left it alone for a bit.

Pulled battery and restarted... No issues yet... I'll leave it on overnight again and see if I wake up to it doing the same thing.

The sound is just honestly obnoxiously loud. Is there anything I can do to change it? I mean if I honestly turned the volume to max, I feel like it would blow the speaker. Even on the lowest possible setting notifications/ringtones are WAY loud.

As for media scanning mentioned by Pedro, it's always sucked for me on Vitality. It'll like say it's done, and rescan another time or two for the hell of it. I didn't notice any slowdown or anything really while it's doing that, though.

Otherwise... Thank you so much. This room is speedy and a smart choice over stock or I'd even say your previous openvitality rom. It really zips about.

In the sound settings under "Volume", have you tried to uncheck the option "Use incoming call volume for notifications"? If not, try it, then adjust your volume settings from there. That solved it for me, at least.
The only other permanent solution would be to remove the eq files all together -- and I _really_ don't want to do that, just for the fact that this phones volume stinks as is. ><

Hope that helps!

btw, I'll be releasing a 1.1 update in about 5 minutes with a patch for the MMS issue.

Yeah I've done that and have them both set to the lowest volume and they're both still rather loud.

I'm not going to bug you to change the EQ files if you don't want, it's your rom and your choice. :)

Thanks a ton for having MMS working so quickly.

Wow, that is odd m8. I had experienced that upon initial flash, but as soon as I unlinked the ringer and notification volumes, then adjusted them, the issue was solved. I can now re-link them and they all follow suit.
Perhaps try that on this new ROM.

Good Luck! :)

Installation: FOR CRICKET USERS
Boot to Recovery
MAKE A BACKUP
Choose Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Go to Mounts and Storage
Choose Format /system
Go back to Main Menu
Choose Install zip from SDCard
Choose zip from SDCard
Flash

My boot recovery program is called <3e>, not sure if it's the same as the original, but I believe I flashed a different one in early 2012 when I also flashed a Samsung Admire rom onto my Vitality. It doesn't have all the "mount" & "format" options; merely "apply sdcard:update.zip" I renamed the OpenVitality zip file to "update.zip" but upon applying the update I received an error message:

"Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted."

:(

Anybody have any ideas, or know how I can get the original recovery utility on my Vitality?
