Help Better on screen keyboard?

OK, so I removed swype as while it is very innovative, it is not for me in the long run. Now no on screen keyboard appears when I attempt to compose a message.

I have made sure that the android keyboard is selected in Locale and Text settings, and I have rebooted my device. Still not getting any on-screen keyboard. I even tried to install better keyboard and not even it will show up when I try to type.

Any ideas??

SlideIT Keyboard

This app rocks. I suppose it is like the SWIPE keyboard, but I have never used that one.

This keyboard learns your custom entries and you can build a library of websites and email addreses, etc. Though, some of the advanced dictionary stuff like saving bulk sets of words is reserved for the paid version.

I fid myself almost never opening the slider to access the physical keyboard anymore and it was my biggest reason fo going with the Moment. Well, that and the beautiful screen and the flash for the camera.

I used SlideIT over Shapewriter because it took up less screen real estate but since loading the Swype Beta, I'll have to give it major props. It much more polished and appears to be MUCH, MUCH more tollerant to my inaccurate 'shapewriting' than either SlideIT or Shapewriter. Sometimes, it's down right scary as if it's got some mind reading ability.

I totally agree. One of the huge improvements in the beta (over that unauthorized version that was posted in the market, briefly), is the ease of tapping out the words if you know something's not going to be recognized (like passwords). I rarely open the slide-out now... unless I mean business.

hey is the .apk not sure if it will install right or not, but its worth a try.

com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk

Did this work on anyone else's moment? The keyboard comes up but there was a message that this version wasn't designed for my phone and after I swype nothing ever gets entered into the text box.

I'm really jonesing for this app if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I couldn't help but notice (and point out) the wicked keyboard lag on that phone in the commercial:eek: Can anyone vouch for how well the Moment handles it?

Edit: I went ahead and took the plunge. I'm trying it for the first time.wow this thing blows away shapewriter! However it send to sometimes have an issue with capitalizing the surat word in a sentence and also with apostrophes sometimes.

Swype killed my battery life. I liked it, but couldn't deal with the battery consumption. Similar complaints from users of other devices, though I seem to be the only person to complain about it here, so maybe I am nuts. :)

I haven't had any issues yet with battery life, but then again this is my first week. Was it substantial? Mine has been close to the same. I do get the second word capital thing and I still haven't figured the double letter thing yet. ;)

Edit: it also pops up quicker than the hero keyboard and more consistently

I still miss the Letter Recognizer "keyboard" from my PocketPC days. It didn't take me very long to be quite fast and accurate with it, perhaps even quicker than using the Moment's hardware keyboard. It needed the stylus, but I expect that something similar could be done for finger input too.

I too miss the stylus input. I sure went thru screen savers tho--too much solitaire I think

If you haven't already, check out the swype video (or tutorial within the program) on using the apostrophe. If you swype them as 2 sep words, e.g. saying "Mary's ..." , I would start on m, swype up out of the screen to capitalize, down to a-r-y, then lift. Then swype over the apostrophe key - s to add the " 's " to the word.

For a day, i went back to the normal onscreen kb and it was unbearable. I seriously love swype and rarely even use the slide out kb.

Yeah, since upgrading from shapewriter to Swype I feel that I may never use the physical KB again... accept for entering website registration/login info that requires pecking:(
