Just received my NT. Too bad its going back

After seeing b&N's update I can't keep it and support a company willing to close off the biggest reason why I wanted it. It's a shame too :-(

I feel ya! I'm confident that the update will be overcome in the next day or so, but it does leave an awful taste in my mouth. I think it's very shortsighted thinking from B&N and stinks of a reality disconnected stuffed suit boardroom decision. The returns and lost sales from this will way outweigh any additional income from forcibly locking down tablet owners to the B&N infrastructure. The users that sideload/root make up a very small percentage of NT owners, but we're vociferous and greatly influence the non sideload/root users purchasing decisions. Not offending us is what made the NC such a success, now they've decided to do the opposite. Fools! As of now I'm keeping my NT, but I'm not going to be shouting up its virtues anymore. If B&N wants me to keep selling for them, they'll have to pay me! The truly sad thing about this is when sales dip because of this decision, those responsible will probably layoff a bunch of working stiffs and give themselves a bonus.

I think I've decided to keep it and see what happens by the end of January since I have until then to return it.

The new 1.4.1 update breaks root but 1.4.0 can be reloaded via sd card. It"s assumed (!) that indirect's newest root method prevents auto updating. There's also evidence that freezing certain processes will prevent updating too. Nothing certain yet.

You would think B&N would look at their offerings and say to themselves, "We definitely are not Apple or Amazon. What can we do to stand out?"

I'm pretty sure they confirmed indirect's method as proven to block the ota. For new tablet owners, you leave wifi on long enough to register then turn wifi off and root as instructed.

There's also a rumor going on that B&N didn't intentionally mean to block sideload access and is working to correct it. I don't know how accurate the rumor is and don't have a link to prove it. It's just hearsay from a comment made when news got out of the blockage so take it for what it's worth.

Truth already out. You can downgrade from 1.4.1 to 1.4.0 easily, then root and block the OTA. Magic! Love my rooted NTab! Have you seen the news on XDA? They found a security crack in the boot sequence that will allow an unsigned kernal to be booted, and they are getting close to having a working verion of ICS ready for the NTab! Tha't gonna be sweet!

I think once the community comes up with an ICS dual boot sd card the sideload problem will be a non problem. Right now there are dual boot cards for the NT that work like a charm in both MIUI and CM7 (2.3.7) versions. I have both and boot up in Android with no problem. If I want to go back to the BN OS all I have to do is reboot and I have a prestine Nook again. If I do a shut down and then start again, I am into Android again. The best part is the warantee is not affected at all. Take out the SD card if you need to get a replacement from BN under warantee or extended warantee it is just like you bought it. Then you can just insert that same card into your new NT and you have not lost a thing on your Android operating system. Hopefully ICS cards will be out soon, but Gingerbread is a very stable OS and the cards work great. I don't know about N2A cards but AndroidForNook cards are great with awesome support. They also have a download image for 10.00 which is what I have. The instructions are so good a complete novice could follow them and have a dual boot system up and running in less then 30 minutes.

I just don't see the need to run B&N at all....if the hardware goes south, i'll try to restore 1.4 so they can service it, but the thing is so cheap the repair cost would not be worth it...just buy another one!
The screen and resolution is just right...i would never buy an ipad or similar larger device....the nook tablet size is just perfect.

Im With you there. I am about to root it and it any happens, Ill just go out and buy the new Nexus 7 Tablet when it comes out.
