[Verizon] Is JellyBean going to keep you away from the S3?

That wasn't my understanding, but I'm no Samsung device expert.

What makes samsung phones so unique is that they have odin mode which gives you an indirect access to the bootloader. Normally through odin you can flash tar files to phone just as you can do through fastboot on our nexus phones. Our nexus phones also have odin mode, accessed by holding volume up + power while the phone is off, but it is not normally talked about because we can use fastboot. How ever there is an extra layer of security on this phone that prevents flashing unsigned recoveries or kernals. Certain devs have since found exploits to flash the custom recovery, and even a custom kernal, but the process is far from perfect and not nearly as stable as having the bootloader being unlocked.

honestly, I dont see what the deal is with flashing custom kernals. These phones are fast as is.

1. better battery life
2. different kernel governors (to suit each individual's needs)
3. underclocking or overclocking
4. undervolting/overvolting (either to support an overclock or reduce power)
5. kernel init.d support
6. color control support
7. gamma control support
8. vibrator frequency control
9. kernel tweaks for optimized SD card speeds
10. fast usb charge support

These are just some I thought of off the top of my head. There are likely 10 more others could come up with.

I won't consider a phone unless I can flash a custom ROM and recoveryand kernel. Others maybe content with just ROMs (like the razr folks), but my Inc was fully open once it had S-OFF and the Nexus is fully open of course. AOSP or bust for me. If it means I can't stay with Verizon, so be it.

I would be ok if Verizon/Samsung offered something like HTC's htcdev.com unlock option. I'm paying for the hardware, let me do what I want with it - I'm willing to void my warranty to get the most out of my phone.

So I just got a chance to compare my coworker's S3 side by side with my JB GNex... And JB GNex won handily. Way faster in all respects that I have found. I am sure graphic intensive gaming performance will go to the S3, we didn't get a chance to test that, but most other everyday tasks the GNex was faster bringing it up. And while the blue GS3 is quite striking in appearance, I like my clean black front better. ANd since the GS3 did not pick up 4G at my desk, my final answer to the OP's title is YES!

And it also means the chances of another Nexus on Verizon is worse than a snowball's chance in hell.

Probable indeed. Ya know what though? I and the other 2 on our plan have no qualms at all about switching carriers so maybe, just maybe, one day when we're ready to make the switch and we can get reliable service from another carrier in our area/s, we will talk back with our wallets (and purse :p)

Well I came from a device that was almost completely locked, to a device that is completely open. And I really like having the freedom to decide what I want to put on my pocket PC that goes with me everywhere. I spent my hard earned dollars on this thing, and it is mine.
Now I couldn't imagine going to a device that has barriers in place to limit me. So I've read that no nexus device will ever be locked without an option to unlock.
I was seriously thinking about getting a kindle fire because it was so cheap, but the nexus 7 is what, $200? If that's true about nexus devices never being locked, then I think I know where my money will be going.

Yeah, I actually asked what my ETF would be for just my line (of my 2 - one for me and one for my wife), and it's only $210. I would gladly pay $210 to get into a T-mobile phone that works as a phone and doesn't have radio issues. My wife is the one who does all the talking, so I'd be fine with a T-Mobile data-driven plan and an unlocked/open phone.

I dunno, I think once Verizon goes to VoLTE we will be able to get an unlocked one like the GSM folks now. But before that... Kinda doubtful. :p

I look forward to this because then those Block C regulations will force them to allow unlocked devices onto their network. But for it to even be viable, they are really going to need to extend their lte footprint drastically. At this point, T-Mobile has better coverage than verizon lte only.
