The GN was locked but not encrypted. So was simple to unlock. GS3 is locked AND encrypted.
SMH at Verizon on this one.
Unless it's a Nexus or confirmed to have an unlocked bootloader, I won't buy it.

Well, so for what I have read, they are able to flash CWM Recovery, which would mean they cracked the bootloader?
No, bootloader is still encrypted. It's a good first step, but no custom kernels == deal breaker for me.
I believe if you can flash a custom recovery (which, for the record, is NOT like the Droid X where you can't flash custom recovery - you had to use a bootstrapper), then you have write access to the kernel.
That wasn't my understanding, but I'm no Samsung device expert.
honestly, I dont see what the deal is with flashing custom kernals. These phones are fast as is.

Not yet.
And that's why I don't envy the S3... or any device with a locked bootloader.
It's definitely something I would not prefer. However, I'd imagine those like you and me are a very small piece of the pie. What this says to me is that VZW is taking a strong stance against this smaller piece of pie.
And it also means the chances of another Nexus on Verizon is worse than a snowball's chance in hell.
Probable indeed. Ya know what though? I and the other 2 on our plan have no qualms at all about switching carriers so maybe, just maybe, one day when we're ready to make the switch and we can get reliable service from another carrier in our area/s, we will talk back with our wallets (and purse )

I dunno, I think once Verizon goes to VoLTE we will be able to get an unlocked one like the GSM folks now. But before that... Kinda doubtful.
So you don't think Verizon will get the next nexus phone? How often do nexus phone come out? Annually, every other year?
