Root CyanogenMod 5.0.5 Overclocking?

I am new to rooting, but not new to overclocking... except for when it comes to phones. :D

I made this thread to find out exactly what I need because I have no idea what is up to date and what isnt, there are so many threads eveywhere with different information. I only rooted last night so I am still quite noobish here.

Question: Does the installation of Cyanogen include everything I need to OC? I have downloaded setCPU 1.5a but that is all. Havent installed it or anything. I'm pretty confused on the whole kernel topic and what needs to be done for me to get my droid up to 800mhz.

To overclock a phone with ANY ROM or ANY kernel, you need an application like Set CPU (is there even another? I don't know, but I won't assume it's the only one).

Ok, well I went ahead and installed setcpu. Been looking at the values on the sliders and it does indeed go to 1000MHz for the max. Now, should I be changing both of these values or just the max value? It would seem logical to increase both values but I don't want to do the wrong thing.

Also, does it have to be set in increments?

Ok I think I got it. Thanks guys. I didn't realize it was this simple... overclocking with computers just made me a little more cautious i guess. I have my profiles set up as follows.. how do they look

Main - 1000/250 - Performance
Charging - 800/250 - Performance
Sleep/Standby - 250/250 - on demand
Power < 40% - 650/250 - on demand
Failsafe / Battery > 44c - 600/250 - on demand

I could instantly notice a performance boost in the 3D app tray and just navigating through all the screens and menus. Battery hasn't dipped below 90% and its been about 5 hours since I unplugged it. I'm pretty satisfied!

Not sure you will but if you have trouble waking your phone up from sleep you will want to bump your charging profile up to 600/250

Ok cool, thanks for the tip! I guess that makes sense too since thats the stock speed of the chip. Thats my "get uber cool temps" mindset coming out.

edit: unless this was another bug, I think I just got my first taste of that. Phone was sitting on my desk for the past 10 minutes.. and my ringer came on but definitely took way too long to display the answer/ignore screen..

I honestly don't let it run below 600 max / 250 min.

I'm oc'd to 1000 at the moment with a AdamZ low voltage kernel. I also don't see the need to set a charging profile. I just have the overtemp and standby profiles activated.

The only reason I use the charging profile is I spend a lot of time on the phone while it is plugged in. The lower frequency (800 for me) keeps the phone running a little cooler than at 1000.

Also... if I may recommend.

DL from the Market... Temp Monitor. Most everyone who overclocks also monitors the temperature of the processor and battery. Why is this important?.. it will give you an overall view of the health of your ROM. Also because of the pure nature of what we are doing the heat goes up. And what does heat do?... it kills.

This is why the stock ROM kernel is 550... easily controlled environment for a stock droid keeps the heat in check.

Max heat I think is 70c.... not F. ;).

Yeah, I use temp monitor as well. But I noticed that there are some screenshots I have seen with a temp reading in the notification bar over to the left? Which apps allow this feature? Or is it just because I have the lite version?

edit: the lite version actually does have the status icon for the battery temp, but not the CPU temp. My notification bar is black though so I can't really read it.

I posted this in another thread somewhere.:) The max constant operating temp for the CPU is 70C. Any higher for prolonged periods of time will shorten it's life. Max operating temp(at all) for the battery on the other hand is 60C. Average operating temp for the CPU under normal(600mhz) conditions is 40C.

Now the absolute "frying point" of the CPU is 105C.. but something tells me if it approaches that at all, something is terribly wrong.

Can I ask where you got this info for the max temps? Not that I don't believe you, but just comparing with someone else who said the max battery temp was 45c. That just sounds a little too low to me, because I have already seen my battery get up to 40c while AC charging, and that was before I even rooted.

I found this info by reading through various TI documents on the OMAP3430 plus documents from Motorola on the battery. All in all, it was a very long read:). 60C is also the standard max-safe temperature for li-ion batteries in general.

EDIT: Some further research seems to suggest that li-ion batteries can go to 90C before becoming "dangerous"-but this seems to happen only with improper charging techniques. 60C seems to be the max temp while charging/discharging without notably decreasing overall battery life. 40C seems to be the average temp during rapid charge/discharge cycles.
