[Verizon] Is JellyBean going to keep you away from the S3?

So you don't think Verizon will get the next nexus phone? How often do nexus phone come out? Annually, every other year?

They're trying to go annually, but no I have very little faith we will see another Nexus. I'm thinking I'll buy the next Nexus off the Play Store and then go to ATT.

I look forward to this because then those Block C regulations will force them to allow unlocked devices onto their network. But for it to even be viable, they are really going to need to extend their lte footprint drastically. At this point, T-Mobile has better coverage than verizon lte only.

I was making the analogy that Verizon's late footprint isn't very big at this point. Sorry for the ambiguity. So VoLTE wouldn't be a feasible for Verizon if users were to use a phone with lte radios only and no CDMA radios.

FWIW; I have an S3 in my hands and have had it for about 6 hours now. It's okay. The form factor is a little awkward: I prefer the variations in shape along the body of the GNex, vs. the slippery, uniform body of the S3.

I do like that there is less wasted bevel on the S3.

I don't like the fixed buttons of the S3.

I think TouchWiz is exceedingly ugly. Fonts are too large, colors are garish and unnecessary, there's too much spacing between list items, etc. It's really a step backwards for ICS.

I will test it for a couple days, but only some appalling increase in battery life over my GNex will keep it in my possession. In all likelihood, it'll go off to eBay.

I just activated my brother's s3 today, and my nexus actually had a better signal, -84 dbm with 56 asu vs his -93dbm and 48 asu

It's awfully tempting the sgs3 is a hot phone. Been tinkering all day. Screen is quite an improvement over my GN as stated in the better reviews. There is zero mura and no tint variance at low brightness. Need more time with it, but signal strength overall looks better albeit small and battery life is out of the box much stronger than the GN was. I love the form factor it's not as slippery as the GN. I happen to like the wiz and the stock keyboard. The browser is faster on the sgs.There are small stutters in the launcher. Other than that it is as buttery as JB on the GN. An excellent phone for the wife she is ecstatic coming from the og Inc.

It's so funny how opinions are so individual, even something as seemingly fact-based as "how slippery is the phone?"

For me, the form factor was very uncomfortable - to thin and wide, it always feels like it is balancing in my palm, whereas the GNex feels like I'm holding it. And holy slippery! There isn't a single piece of texture or an angle to grab on the whole phone.

I was really considering the S3, but now that I've had time on JB, I think I'll stay for a while . My overall main complaint with my gnex is the reception. I wished it had much better reception ...then I wouldn't even be thinking of another phone.

im probably going to buy the iphone5 when it comes out, just to have one really, the s3 is an amazing phone, but im ready for something different, however i will still continue to use my android phones, they may not be my primary phones, but i will still be using them.

Well to revisit the future Nexus on Verizon talk, I find it somewhat good news that Verizon is allowing Samsung to offer an unlockable S3 that will work on Verizon's network. Perhaps the next Nexus will be available direct from Google for Verizon similar to this, with no subsidy. I could live with that being I'm on unlimited anyways..

I tested out the demo unit at Sprint store yesterday, but it didn't seem much different from GNex besides the better camera and a few buttons slapped on the front.

No it's much more comfortable to hold than the GN imo. And much less slippery indeed. So much so that I wish my GN was more similar to it in form factor, honestly. It is funny how different we can be. Also, I like the font size better on the SGS3....me aging eyes

A co-worker received his SIII yesterday so we were comparing this morning.

Note: currently running JB 2.5 for my Nexus.

• Speed tests for SIII were faster than Nexus by ~15%
• When running speed tests on SIII the device was extremely hot
• GPS on SIII took significantly longer to acquire location than on my Nexus, SIII was hot also during acquisition.
• We were also seeing the same signal strength which to me meant they could be using the same radios ??

For me holding and using the Nexus was easier than the SIII because of the more narrow form factor, personal preference though.

I didn't care for the Touch Wiz either as others have noted.

I was also surprised of the limited amount of bloatware on the SIII, but Samsung does have several 'Samsung specific' apps preloaded.

To me the SIII is a good device comparable to the Nexus, but it didn't want me to change devices.

The Nexus' signal is on-par with other LTE devices in strong signal locations, but it's indoors and in marginal areas where it has issues. So to really see if the SGSIII performs better in the radio department, a fringe/low-signal area (or in a building) should be used to compare I think.


I am 99.99% sure it is not the same radios as the Nexus. The S4 SoC in the SGSIII has a new an on-die LTE radio from qualcomm.

From indoors we saw,
SIII: -110 dBm 30 asu LTE
Nexus: -111 dBm 29 asu LTE

We then went to a poor signal area within the building,
SIII: -93 dBm 2 asu CDMA
Nexus: -83 dBm 4 asu CDMA

outdoors,
SIII: -97 dBm 43 asu LTE
Nexus: -96 dBm 44 asu LTE

Would there be a better way to compare?

Yes, there's a nice app that will show the RSSI RSRT signal values as well as the SNR. The key thing I've seen is the SNR Is much lower on the Nexus.

Bought an VZW nexus in December, put JB on it 2 days ago, bought a S3 yesterday and returned it today. JB is great and totally improves the nexus.

The Verizon S3 has a locked bootloader.... I'm a loyal, angry, Verizon customer. They've screwed up my bill so many times, and it takes an argument for them to fix it and credit my account. The ONLY reason I stay with them is because I get service almost EVERYWHERE. but if the next nexus phone isn't carried by Verizon, I'll be willing to switch. I don't like the idea of not having the freedom to tweak my device out.
