Root These 4 things possible without using custom roms?

I see. So to have the things I posted what do I need exactly?
1. unlock your bootloader by flashing "fastboot" to your phone.
- this voids your warranty and is the first process you do to be able to root your phone.

2. flash "superboot" to your phone.
- this actually "roots" your phone.

3. flash "amon RA's recovery" rom
- current version is 1.7.0

4. do a "nandroid backup"
- this backs up your phone to amon's recovery image in case you want to revert back to where your phone was before you installed a custom rom

5. install custom rom
- this gives you most of the abilites everyone is ranting and raving about.

I want these 4 things without having to install a custom ROM; is it possible?

- Install Apps to SD Card
- Use LED Flash as a flashlight
- Customize trackball notification colors
- Use All 512 MB of Ram

Thanks in advanced for your help! I am loving my N1 :D

If you are dead-set on rooting your phone to get access to some of these things, why would you not want to install a custom ROM?!? That's what 95% people do it for (at a guess).

The first and the last items you want, you have to flash a customer ROM (I would strongly recommended Cyanogen, which in my mind, is the most stable). Have also tried Modaco's.....

I would strongly suggest you use the "Video guide to rooting your Nexus" - it links to textual instructions and video on the Unlockr website......follow both through separate windows. This is what I used.

Your Nandroid link is not correct, that is why I suggest doing the above.

Be careful when doing a Radio update (although I did) as this is the only thing that could really brick your phone. Radio updates are not obligatory.......thought I am running 4.02 (at the end I think, from ERE34B).

OK I flashed the recovery image. How do I do the next step? Nandroid backup?

you can do a nandroid backup right from within the Amon RA Recovery screen... it's called "nand backup" in the list... I tried doing the nand backup from the command line, but wasn't working for some reason... but it's also available through the Amon RA Recovery image, so that's how I did it...
