Root Sold rooted Evo, buyer says cannot be activated; how to determine problem?

I recently sold my EVO on eBay. Before selling it, I rooted it, but left it stock otherwise (I didnt feel like going to the trouble to try Boost or picking a ROM). Of course, I did not have an account set up on the phone when I did this, so I couldnt test if it was working for sure. The person who bought the phone returned it, of course, saying it would not work with their service. After further inquiry, they supposedly took it to a Sprint store and said " it is not working the way it should with service."

I want to know if this is merely an issue of this person attempting to activate the phone in a store, the clerk recognizing it as rooted, and not activating for her, or if there is an actual issue with the phone. How can I determine this? My guess is the Sprint store isnt going to be very helpful since the phone is rooted. Can I do this without having to activate the phone myself?

If it is a Sense Rom it can be activated. I had to activate my old EVO on my wifes account and it went fine with no issue. The only possible thing that could prevent it is using an AOSP ROM or a Hardware failure.

It doesn't sound likely that its a hardware failure if you were using it just fine then all of a sudden this new buyer is having instant issues with it. Does it have a sense rom on it? I'd try flashing the security update stock rom on it, try activating it over the phone so the bonehead sprint store people can't eff it up, and see what happens then. I'm betting the "hardware problem" was from the aosp rom, not a hardware issue.

Plus most places will not care really if your phone is rooted. the only time when it might matters is when rooting is the cause of the phone being non functional, ie you bricking it. if it is a hardware failure then you should be fine.
