GS3 Case discussion thread

I thought you bought the elago blue one? Didn't like it?

I did, and I like it very much, just trying this second one for feel. It does offer a bit more protection and makes the side buttons a little easier to push, and is a little grippier on the console of my truck. In terms of looks, though, there's barely a discernible difference.

One thing I don't like about the silicone case (otherwise known as the "crappy, shiny" one) is how the back seems to be a fingerprint magnet.

Gray looks good with the blue, but they also have white.

BTW, the phone looks great (until you drop it :))

I have a gray case. Though i probably should have gone with the colorless one.

Has anyone had any luck with cases and screen protectors going together? It seems from my brief experience that many cases will peel the protector off unless the protector is cut short enough.

MODS, I'm going to post this in the screen protector thread also as I think it's useful to both.

The case I bought already had a screen protector bundled with it. See my previous post above. It's a Capdase.

The screen protector does not peel off, though it doesn't cover the whole screen.

I understand. Unfortunately it's really common to see the two used interchangeably when they really are different. I don't know enough about chemistry to know what really makes up TPU and Silicone and there may very well be some overlapping ingredients. I just know that what is usually referred to as a "Silicone case" is relatively soft and stretchy whereas the TPU cases are much more firm and not very stretchy at all. They are very flexible but they don't really stretch or have the softer rubber feel that silicone does.

If you're familiar with the silicone bakeware or oven mitts that are becoming more popular in the kitchen isle of stores you see what it feels like. I'm not trying to be critical of you. I'm trying to educate anyone reading this because it's a thread about cases and there are big differences between the two materials. As with the packaging on your case, the people selling them frequently don't even get it right.

Benny
they are very very different, it seems as though the average joe would call any sort of synthetic rubber like compound "silicone", TPU is derived from polyurethane and contains no silicates.

I managed to convince my mom to get the S3 over the iPhone. (WIN for me...and her.) I also managed to snag one of the coolest cases I have ever seen for a phone. Verizon had two left in stock where I was. The cover actually replaces the rear housing and has a flip over (perfectly finished in brushed feel) cover that is reminiscent of an iPad case. It isn't magnetic, but actually is pretty comfortable in the hand. However, it does not double as a stand.

I think it will be great for her because you can talk with the cover closed and prevent makeup/oil build up on the screen and there is no need for a display protector (which can mess up glare and clarity of the FANTASTIC AMOLED display this thing packs)

I got my S3 on Sunday, and had Best Buy apply the Zagg screen protector. The guy warned me to let it set for 24 hours before I put the "shiny, rubberish" Cellet case on, or else the edges will lift. Well, I gave it an hour or so, because I was impatient. 3 corners went on without a hitch. The 4th one lifted, but I was able to save it.

Anyway, this morning I got an Otterbox Commuter. It came with a screen protector, but since the Zagg was already on there, I decided to leave it. As I was pulling the Cellet off, I checked the lifted corner. No problem at all. And the Zagg fits with the Commuter. I'm keeping the Otterbox screen protector as a backup for down the road.

Haha, look at this drop test of the Samsung Galaxy S3 while being in an Otterbox defender case. By the way the Defender case is now available. The link is in the video

Samsung Galaxy S3 Drop Test with OtterBox Defender Case - YouTube

ANY defender case is TOP notch for overall protection. I had one on my OG evo for two years and dropped it literally dozens of times without incident. Those cases are beasts!

Now if Amazon will just get me my BLUE commuter Ill be happy!

I went to a Verizon store this morning. They didn't have the blue TPU case in stock, so I went to a corporate store. They had it. I tried it on the phone. It fit quite well, but the hole for the noise cancellation mic was way off (partially covering it). I didn't bother trying any other ones, since $20 is way too much for a TPU case (I freely admit I'm cheap).

But I did notice that the case is made by Belkin. Amazon doesn't have the blue one, nor does Belkin themselves. Verizon must have exclusivity or something. I'll keep checking back to see when the case becomes available through channels other than Verizon. And I've got to remember that I can shop in another wireless provider's store since the phones are all outwardly identical.

I still haven't received the Diztronic matte blue TPU case I ordered Tuesday morning, so I'm using the generic S-Line case I bought off ebay. The translucent blue is NOT growing on me; quite the opposite, it is grating on me because the front is sort of neon. Ugh.

I might consider a hybrid case, but they all seem to use silicone. Even when it's just around the front of the phone, I find it to be way too grippy. Does anyone know of a hybrid case that uses TPU instead?

That's the one I have, and I just looked and nothing is covered anywhere, all openings fit perfectly. Is the noise cancellation mic the one on the top or the bottom?

Received my Case Mate Barely There case in metallic silver, had the same case on my Thunderbolt. Unfortunately the edges on the inside part of the case for the cutouts of the camera, speaker, and flash were rather rough. I wasn't very comfortable putting the case on and possibly scratching the back of the S3.

I called and I had to provide a picture and it should be replaced.

I've had other Case Mate products including the Pop case for an ipad 2 and a Barely There case for my wife's iPhone so I'm thinking this is an isolated incident.
