When iPad mini comes at $199...

I agree with everyone here. On top of the fact that it's simply apple, you have to remember that Nexus 7 and the iPad mini are polar opposites
The Nexus 7 is all about MAXIMIZING potential. It IS the new leader.
Meanwhile the iPad mini is all about compromise. A tablet for the iSheep that haven't quite been as successful but are just as dumb.

Not much.... Most people that really want Apple are willing to pay the extra $$ to begin with. Also I personally feel that the Nexus will be able to stand on its own. Especially given the improvements to the OS (Project Butter) and different home screens look. Plus a 7" 4x3 display would be just wrong...

I had this conversation with a buddy of mine a while back (Huge Apple fan). He was hoping to see a 199$ apple tablet and thought the money apple would make on the store would be worth it. I thought that the ONE thing Apple has going for it is the price tag. People think its the best because its priced to be that way... The othe problem is they don't make that much off the the app/itunes store (like 8 - 10%) over all revenue. Which means subsidizing will not work very well given they make most of their profits from hardware.

Given all of that Apple has never really gotten into a price war and I dont think it would be smart for them to do so.... Maybe a 299$ 8 gig 7" and a 379 - 399$ 16 gig would be more their speed. They know if they build it people will buy it. I think they have a good 2 - 4 more years before people start asking why the hell they are spending so much for something so dated. People don't like change and will pay to stay where they are.....

9/10 I post here from my dads iPad I dislike apple. But it's a fantastic tablet for a tablet. No apple bias just as a device I could use.

The Apple bashing is downright deluded, as usual. Apple makes an extremely high quality product.

I think a 7" tablet is going to be priced more around the $300 mark. I highly doubt you'll see it at $250 or less, because that's not Apple's ball game. Honestly, I think that would be bad, long-term, for their brand. They'd make a big splash and sell a lot of units, but there's a reason BMW doesn't make a $12,000 vehicle - and it's not because they couldn't sell a $12,000 vehicle.

Google believes it can push the edge of the market by selling a tablet at cost. In order to build a $200 tablet, Apple would have to either make some serious compromises, or lose money on each tablet - and they don't work like that. However, with Jobs no longer at the helm, we may well see some odd moves in the future, so there's no telling...

I respectfully suggest the lack of a micro slot and full usb host kind of kills the maximizing potential. That is unless you are referring to their N7 cloud strategy.

My guess is the starting price is $250 and they might kill the iPod, or cut the skus down to two.

$200 is a dream that will never happen for apple. Heck, I think even 300 is a stretch. I am thinking at least 350 but more like 380 to 400 for 16gb version.

Other companies that make a nice Android 7 inch with tegra 3 and not centered around gaining shares but more on margins are charging a nice preium for their products (Toshiba comes to mind), so why would you think apple why sell for less?

I still don't see how the "cloud strategy" is a main feature of the N7. I know that's definitely one of your pet peeves about the N7. If Google really cared, they would've included a promotion for cloud services. Kind of like how Google wants people to embrace the Play Store, they gave you free credit to test drive it. Back to the ipad, There's no way that it costs less than $350. Apple isn't about to cannibalize their own market (ipod touch)

Apple has no reason to sell at $199. If they sell at $199, it's a sheer panic move on their part. They can sell at $300 or higher and still sell a crapload of product.

I agree... what will be interesting, though, is without the leadership of Jobs, if they will actually give into a panic like this.

You never can really predict what a company - especially one as unique as Apple - will do with a shift in leadership.

Why would Apple panic? They still basically own the tablet market, but they'd be foolish to think they'd be there forever. I don't think Apple is that foolish. It's not like other tablet OEMs are eating there lunch. Honestly, you could make an argument that Apple doesn't even need to come out with a 7 inch tablet. Selling it at what would be fire sale prices for them really doesn't make any sense.

I don't even think they'll call it an iPad. I believe they'll stick it in the iPod Touch line and market it as a bigger option. They said they wouldn't make a 7 inch iPad, but I could see them RDF'ing the public by making them think that there's that much of a difference in the three iOS lines to warrant different names. People will buy it because it's apple, plain and simple. Millions of people worldwide will line up to buy it, for whatever reason. Apple makes a quality product (I'll probably never own a Windows computer for my personal use ever again), but the way they convince people to buy their product is the stuff of legends.

Price wise, no way it dips below $300. It'll probably be no more than $100 less than the current iPad's lowest capacity.

Exactly! I don't use pandora much, but with the Play Music app, and generally any other music app I've tried in the past, the controls always show up on the lock screen.
