ok so I just installed the wifi tether. i opened the app up, changed my ssid, and pasephrase. I then went to my laptop to search for wireless networks and I can't find my droid. What could I have done wrong

also...i thought maybe I had to turn on wifi in the phone settings. when I went to turn on, it said it was unable to turn on wifi. I went back to the tether and turned it off but the phone settings still could not turn on wifi.

Don't know why your laptop can't find the tether but I can help you with the wireless part. WiFi Tether uses the 3G data network...you can't have WiFi on while tethering (defeats the purpose right? If you had WiFi...you wouldn't need to tether through your phone).

yest but when I turn tethering off, I still can get a wifi signal on my phone. when I am home and on my phone, sometimes i like to browse using my home wifi so that downloads are fasters.

so are you telling me that just because I installed the wifi tether, the ability to get a wifi signal on my phone is gone?

You're WiFi is broken...What ROM are you running? What kernel are you running? Many times (especially a few months back) all overclocking kernels broke WiFi and you had to replace the tiwlan_drv.ko file...that is your WiFi driver BTW. Check the threads where you got your ROM or OC kernel...there are probably files you need to patch to fix that.

That is why your WiFi tether isn't being seen...it's not transmitting.

I followed the instructions from here : Wifi Tether | Root Your Droid

I followed it exactly. In fact I restore a back up and tried it again.
Is there another guide out there that is newbie friendly?

Okay, restore a backup and then just download and install the latest WiFi .apk from here: Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code

Don't do anything else...just install it and then run it. You never told me what ROM your running (I don't think you did). Most of the new ROM's are ready to run WiFi tethering. The post you referenced is 2 months old...that's like 9 years in "Android world"! lol

And therein lies the problem. By your statement you are running stock 2.0.1, just with root access. You need to install at least a kernel that includes wifi tethering ability or a ROM that contains such a kernel.

For an easy solution and an "older" 2.0.1-based ROM, just download DMupdater in the market, and let it do it's thing to install Droidmod 1.0.

Better yet, there are many "newer" and better 2.1-flavor ROMs out there now and a wealth of info in this subforum on how to install and use them.

Ok i will try it. But can you still provide instructions on how to install the wifi tether?

Thanks

Edit.....no dmupdater in the market....?????

If you have the wifi tether app installed,it should work with the right kernel as it is.

I can't seem to find dmupdater on the market either..although it is free at the Droidmod website.

EDIT: The Droidmod 1.0 rom includes the wifi tether app. Also as a side note you do not absolutely have to wipe DATA when instslling it since it is 2.0.1 based..this will retain your personal settingd, messages, etc.
