Help User Reviews of The HTC EVO 4G LTE

I'm reviving this thread, just to see what the impressions are of the White EVO, if anybody picked it up this past Sunday.

Also, does anybody know if that's going to remain a Sprint store exclusive (like the 32gb SGS 3 is)?

Searched and found this unboxing video:

Tech-Snobs.com | HTC EVO 4G LTE White (Sprint) Unboxing

Sprint/HTC went with the white panels and silver/aluminum chassis scheme. A white wall adapter and power cord! Don't think I've ever seen one of those. The cutout for the proximity and ambient light sensor is somewhat distracting on the white screen face. Sort of detracts from the overall clean look. The front facing camera is tolerable, farther up in the corner.

There is a handful of other unboxings on Youtube that I didn't care to watch.

Thanks, Pyro. My keyword search skills are starting to suck!...LOL. I actually really like that color scheme a lot.

Considering i'll likely add a custom skin on the back, like I have in the past:
</title> <base href="http://www.uniqueskins.com/" > <meta name="description" content="" > <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" > <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7"> <script src="js/pngfix_tar

This is definitely my top choice, as far as looks are concerned. I just hope Best Buy offers it in white at some point.

OK...I'm certainly frustrated with this phone.

I'm coming from the original EVO 4G which I had for just shy of 2 years- and loved it.

I think to start, my calls to Sprint Tech support-with all due respect to them- are a waste of time. I feel like I have some 16 year old girl on the other end of the line thumbing through a users manual trying to find the answers to my questions...very frustrating that they don't have some people that actually know what their talking about answering the phone. grrrr....

OK...on with the issues....

1- When I set up a primary number for someone (ie they have 3 numbers- I set one of those as the "primary") shouldn't that be the number that comes up when I dial their name?? It's not. If I placed a recent call to that person on their non-primary number, when I type their name in I get the number that I dialed recently, not their primary number. Is there a way to not have those "recent calls" show up when dialing someone's name?

2- Phone coverage sucks- I was trying to think of a nicer way to say this but couldn't come up with one. Again, coming from teh original Evo, I had much better service than I so with this. Yesterday I had 4 dropped calls on the way to work- that never happened once in all my time with the original. I have done a PRL and all other system updates....

3- GPS- I was trying to find a place yesterday and the GPS was acting plain silly....constantly "looking for GPS signal" even though I'm smack dab in the middle of a major metropolitan area. It was to thie point it was looking for well over 10 minutes. I gave up and pulled out a map.

4- Leaving wi-fi- my phone connects to my wi-fi at my house. Unfortunately when I leave it never connects to the sprint network. Almost never. I end up having to restart the phone and then it connects. I've tried a million other things before doing the actual restart but nothing works.

Clearly all this things are frustrating- certainly don't want to be negative, but it's hard when they hype it up and I dish out $200 and then have to deal with this.

Would love any feedback at all....

Cheers!

Scott

Sounds like it may be a bad phone

i restored contacts from gmail cleanly...will have to play with the defaults as I have not noticed the behavior you have.

GPS locks onto multiple satellites in 4-7 seconds...indoors even

no dropped calls for me but others have had this. Could be die to the temporary network issues or could be a bad phone

tech support can only do so much over the phone. Do you have TEP? Have you considered taking in to a corporate repair store?

Thanks for the feedback....

The funny thing is I'm already on my third phone- the first couldn't open the text message function- they told me it was corrupt and gave me a new one- and then on the second one the power button at the top was stuck down....forcing it to always restart.

I guess I'll have to take it to a store and get their thoughts...

Just very frustrating...

I haven't had any of these issues either, it sounds like you've had really bad luck! Hopefully they can take care of you - but if you're going to the same store each time, I'd check the phone out before leaving to make sure it doesn't have any of these issues, you don't want them to give you back one of the phones you already had that wasn't working right.

I'm really beginning to think that there was a bad production run or three that got through QA/QC, or maybe one of HTCs suppliers isn't up to snuff. There seems to be a significant minority of folks with hardware defects, some of whom have had the same problems even after 2 or 3 exchanges. I guess I was one of the "lucky" ones that got a zero-defect phone. Don't give up even you're on your second or third exchange - "good" EVOs are out there. You don't have to settle for a product with defects, and you don't have to settle for a lesser phone if you're thinking about exchanging for another model.

Been using both OG Evo and this LTE side by side since I got the LTE. I use 2 lines. When the signal was bad for one, it was bad for both. Makes me feel better that the prob is the network.

When i turn on gps and navigation, then hit map, it shows me going right down the road I am on.

I notice my wi fi icon fading off and on sometimes. Haven't had any problem with defects in screen or anything.

One thought I had. Looks like the phone antenna is built into the removable black plastic. Wonder what kind of contact that makes in different phones? I actually think this otterbox defender case may help with that somewhat, it is all sort of sandwiched in there and doesn't have any pressure put on it...

Just rambling...

I actually think there are plenty of defect free phones out there, it's just that people seldom post "hey my phone is working great" - they tend to post "hey I'm having this or that problem, how do I fix it" - so it only appears the zero-defect phones are rare.

I have one of the pre-orders that arrived the first day we could get them (I forgot what the date was and don't feel like looking it up) and I've had virtually no problems. Occasionally (maybe once a week?) it takes a minute longer than normal for a text to send, but that's it, otherwise everything is working great for me. That being said, sure there are some bad phones (or good phones with bad parts, lol), but that's normal given the number of phones out there. It also doesn't help that Sprint store reps and phone reps don't necessarily know the phone so they sometimes give ridiculous advice (I read in one of these threads where someone was told to take their battery out to reset their phone ) combined with users of varying degrees who sometimes may not understand how different apps may be causing issues, and then there are network problems.... there are so many factors that can be causing problems.

People just need to be patient while they work through their own phone issues, whether it means exchanging multiple times, or getting advice from people here. The people here are amazing... and patient.... and so helpful!

I'm a pretty proud person. I don't like to make mistakes. But, I did something I shouldn't have.... I.... Went over to the dark side, and tried the Samsung Galaxy S III. I know! Don't you think I know that? Stop shouting at me! It was a mistake!

I tried the GS3 out for a few days. It had some pretty neat software features but once those wore off I realized it just felt like an inferior phone. Samsungs cartoonish interface just didn't do it for me, and though I could use a launcher over it I just felt like I was missing something. It also just lacked that high quality device feel. I'm back with HTC and am using the LTEvo and am super happy! Premium device feel, AMAZING screen, and an interface that's well thought out and just overall better refined than Samsung's. I know these type of threads can get old and generally serve no purpose, but I always think with all the threads complaining of problems it's nice to have one once in a while that tells about the good in a phone. That's all! :)

So I'm not a "techy" person however, with all the hype of the EVO 4G LTE, I'm wondering if my expectations are high or if there is a problem with my phone. I've had it about 6 weeks now and showing all updates are complete. 2 weeks ago I could not get a data connection. Phone customer service said they couldn't even connect to my phone and the store blamed it on the LTE towers trying to connect before the 15th deadline. 2 days later I somehow had a data connection. Now a week after the LTE launch, I have yet to experience 4G eventhough I'm showing on the map to be in the area. Also, I've traveled all through Dallas without any luck. Another issue I'm having are texts "unable" to send or receiving msgs several hours later, the speak option almost never can connects and my apps continuiously show I don't have a data connection when I do. Calling Sprint or taking it to the store is usually a joke because they will tell you they don't see the problem or I'm just not in the 4G area. So is anyone else experiencing this?

So you had the phone for 6 weeks and lost connection for two weeks, what happened to the other 4 weeks ? LTE just started rolling out to some cities and you as a consumer new Sprint was in the process of upgrading their network so why complain? It's not like you didn't know you was taking a chance with their network not fully up and running. My girl just got this phone and we have no LTE but for whatever reason the phone is respectable fast on 3g..

Bnice- There were only 2 days with no data connection whatsoever, but if you will reread my post, you will see that not having the LTE service isn't my main complaint nor was it the reason this phone was purchased...it's having a phone that isn't doing most of what it's suppose to. Glad that your "girl's" phone is fast on 3g, but I'm not so lucky with 3g, 4g or even wifi...

Well the 4G issue has nothing to do with the hype of the phone. Just know that the LTE launch was quite overstated by Sprint. It's not your phone that's the issue there. The other stuff I can't speak to because I haven't had those issues.

it was overstated by the Media...not Sprint.

just to remain clear. There are two cities I am aware of that are having issues with the released coverage areas...and I understand that Sprint is working hard to fix those.

I mention here like I did in the other threads about this...if you are in a coverage area listed at Sprint.com/coverage, stationary and outdoors and not getting LTE please send me addresses

heroldtx, thank you for sending the addys

I am only a few more minutes away. if you head up my way drop by and say howdie

Sorry to hear that your experience has been a less than good. I love my phone and have not really had a problem. I am not a techy person either. I do know what you mean about taking in the phone though. They can never duplicate my problems either. I too live in a 4g area and the only time I get it is inside my building at work for usually a minute at most and what makes me laugh is on the map my work area has more 3g than anything. I can't even get it to pick up outside the building. Just hope it gets better. Oh and what does sending my address do? Just asking.

Sprint needs to know you can't access lte...

Ok we can agree to disagree. No need to disagree with me everytime I make a comment about this launch. :) The media didn't create sprint's coverage maps.

Alright, so as a techie, I understand that software can be buggy. I understand that updates fix and improve things over time, but sometimes do the opposite. I understand that I should put up with the occasional reboot. However, I DO NOT understand why the hell I cannot use my phone. I am tired, I am pissed, and I have exhausted the thought of how much I regret trading in my evo 3D. Yes, the LTE Evo has a lot of RAW power, but what good is that if I cannot freaking use it?

So, *ahem*, after my angry rant, here is what has been going on with my phone (and getting increasingly worse) for the last month:

  1. 4G my a$$ - I live in Houston, one of the the first markets that was supposed to get 4G. The Wimax network, which was aleady spotty, is still a lot more present in Houston than the so called Sprint LTE deployment. Look, I am a patient guy, but when my 3g speeds cannot go past DIAL UP then we have a big problem. Am I seriously paying 230 dollars a month so that four smartphones have DIAL UP speeds? Cmon, Sprint!!
  2. People (HTC stock app) - it does not work. every once in a while, it will start working, but for the past month, I can only dial numbers on my call history. The problem? When I open the app and search through contacts, everything is dandy. But when I click on a contact, I get a black screen. It is a screen where the top notification bar still shows, and the latter still responds, but right below it is just dark. If i click home button, it does go back to home. However, clearing the cache, rebooting, etc, does nothing to get the app working. That's right. Reboot does not work.
  3. Google Play - It ALSO does not work. So you can kinda search through it up until the point I click on an app. At that point, the whole thing freezes and my only choice is to exit out by pressing the home button. Moreover, reboot also does NOT work.
  4. Gmail app. - Please see the last two points. Exact same problem. Except this time, when you click it to open the app, it simply takes me to a white screen. And that's it. Reboot also does NOT work, nor does clearing cache, etc.
:

So, am I alone in this? I do not know what to think. Since around 2008-9ish, when I first got an Android phone, I have never hated a device so much in my life. The worst part is, it used to work. And then it used to heat up a lot. And then right after a meaningful vacation with my wife, it had a sudden death (the screen literally went off when I was using it, never to turn on again. And according to my forum research, I was not the only one who suffered this "sudden death syndrome") losing all my pictures. And then Best buy black tie's thingie got me a new one, which is the one I have now...with a gazillion problems. Thoughts, or recommendations?

@dark,

if you have been a member of this forum for a while, you have read up on the issues some have experienced with this handset. many have not had any issues and some have had a few issues. happens when people are in different parts of the world and have different environments in which they use their handsets.

I have also moved your comment to this impressions thread since you are giving your opinion on how the handset works in your environment.

lets not try and get a "rant thread" going here. I understand you have frustrations with the device and this forum will hopefully help you to find the right paths to take to getting them resolved. This thread is a good place to voice your concerns about the unit and let others help in a mature fashion.

to help you:

1. sprint is going through growing pains with their network so many may see some issues with 4G and 3G. I would look over in the sprint forum for more on this as its mostly a network issue and not a phone issue.

2. chalk that up to multitasking issues. there is a thread discussing just that on the first page of this forum. i encourage you to look there and possibly even post a question/comment.

3. still sounds like multitasking/low ram/memory issues. again refer to my comment in #2.

4. refer to #2 and also there is a GMAIL thread (a couple if you search) that speaks a little on this.

some have went to rooting their device to get better results with the handset, so if you are open to rooting, smoke over the rooting section.

Again your comments/concerns are duly noted. hopefully spending some time on this forum will arm you with the knowledge you need to make your device work better in your environment.
