Where do you do NFC payments?

Where do you do NFC payments? The kind where you go to a store and tap it? TIA.

Where as in setup or where as in on the device? I don't believe this will support payments because there is no internet access (Could be wrong).... If there is NFC its probably more for tech tile type options?

Oh, I forgot about lack of internet connectivity.
One reviewer said he bought a pack of toilet paper by tapping the N7. Just sounded kinda cool, and I'd like to try it out, but have no idea how to set it up, and which stores accept this.

I think it only works at stores that have Mastercard paypass set up. I don't think a data connection is necessary. It works just like if you tapped your real life Mastercard. Your card info would be stored on your phone. I've never used this though because I don't even think this service is currently offered in Canada by Google.

Also, my Nexus 7 has Wallet pre-installed, so it should be able to be used somewhere. for example, Starbucks has free WiFi, so if Internet access is a requirement, using it there shouldn't be an issue. But when I check where I can use it, there's some gas stations, CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, etc., that probably don't have Wi-Fi. May or may not be an issue. /shrug

Mainly, I think it's the carriers competing ISIS NFC system they are trying to get going. As for the data requirement, I think that the info for GWallet can be basically "synced", if I'm understanding how NFC works, meaning a live Internet connection isn't required. I could be wrong, though.

I'm pretty sure that a data connection is necessary in order to use Google Wallet. When i first tried to use my GN at a paypass retailer it didn't work. I did have a data connection but it turns out that proxy needed to be left blank in my apn in order for wallet to work. Can anyone confirm/clarify if data is required in order to use wallet?

So I put my phone into airplane mode, to simulate opening the Wallet app as if I was going to use an N7 at a place which did not have WiFi.

Wallet needed an internet connection to open...

...so does this mean that we would need internet connectivity before leaving a WiFi hotspot before walking into a 7-11? I think so...

...and the longest Wallet can stay timed-in is 30.

Makes me wonder how valuable Wallet is on a WiFi tablet???

I still think (although wallet does install) that the NFC antenna was put on the device for things like beaming, tiles, and other syncing things.

Yeah, it's kind of odd. The most logical way to try this that I could figure out was McDonald's since they have the paypass terminals AND wi-fi. I couldn't get the Wallet app to work well enough to pay with it on the N7 though on my first try. I'll have to try it again at some point. (I just can't leave that $10 laying there. )

I really doubt Wallet was a big selling point of the N7. It seemed like beam was more important to Google. With the large size and needs of a data connection, it just seems like it's more work than necessary.

Did you try a 2nd time yet? Please go back and try to buy some mcnuggets. :beer: I can't wait to try this out but am afraid looking like a complete loon as I blindly tap the tablet on the counter. So there IS an app for this, OK, good to know.

the only place I could not do a transaction was at one particular basement level in Macys and it showed my phone had no data connection. So I think there is some level of communication going on with google wallet.

I have used google wallet at:
West Coast:
Macys
Peets coffee chain (mostly west coast)
Walgreens
CVS
Container Store
East Coast
Duane Reade
Taxi cab in NYC

At most of these places it brought a smile to the casher and looks of shock from customers behind me. One guy ran up to me and asked how he could do that on his iphone and I told him to trash the iphone and get an android. lol. He didn't like that. Walked away and sulked and muttered under his breath. Probably said something like pompus android nerd.

...to answer your question... NFC is always on...I use it everyday and have never toggled it off. And in this particular instance, I attempted back to back purchases. The first with data on. Then waited for Wallet to time out. Toggled Airplane Mode, attempted second payment...no go.

It works! Actually, it works far better than my GNex does for Wallet.

Also, just checked on my GNex that I can bring up the app in airplane mode as it asks for me to change my NFC setting. Haven't tried an actual payment without a connection though. I suspect at least the receipt portion won't work without the connection. I've noticed NFC is used a lot to open another connection system such as Bluetooth, or in this case, internet.

im not able to confirm as i was tethering, but I thought the same thing.
the paypass devices (exxon mobil tags) don't need an internet connection so i doubt NFC does as well, unless it's completely different technology.

You don't need an internet connection to make the payment, but I think you do need one for Wallet to get updated balance info etc when unlocking the app to use it. Because I have to unlock the Wallet app and let it get to the homescreen of the app prior to walking into my breakroom, or it will never connect (my breakroom is a deadzone).
