Needing some desperate survival advice/tips. Was talking with my cube mates today and the topic of politics came up. This was entirely my fault TBH. We were talking about the shooting at the Batman movie which cause me to mention the ridiculous Limbaugh comment that Bane was picked as a villain just to take a stab at Romney.

Somehow this spiraled downward and the next thing I know I was listening to a guy tell me how Obama's birth certificate was a complete forgery and he really was born in Kenya. Also "they" tried to silence the Drudge Report when they tried to reveal this. He hoped that Romney could capitalize on this and win. This led to the other guy talking about how he didn't think Romney had any chance because "they" had already picked Obama and entire election is rigged to begin with. It then further spiraled into how Tesla had a way to give free power to everyone, but rich bankers shut him down and destroyed his plans and some how the JFK assassination was brought up at which point my head exploded and I don't recall anything else.

Any tips on how to survive this? How can computer nerds who work with machines that think so logically think so irrationally?

Ignore it haha I have some of the same type of people where I work, chime in if you feel you can / or want to.

With the Obama issue... it doesn't matter where he was born, his mother was a US citizen already, which in turn makes him a US citizen regardless of where he is born. Though it is stated that a candidate must have lived in the states for a certain amount of consecutive years before being able to run for presidency.

But I have gotten off topic haha sorry bout that..

But yea just gotta stay out of it, I let the people that are like that around me know my opinions, and tell them thats my opinion and they can have they're own if that is what they think.

These fools are ever-present and out in the open. Conspiracy theorists are a dime a gross and rather than get upset, just avoid them.

If you must proceed, ask for proof. Facts and figures. They will probably reference the web or Alex Jones. Give up because you have better things to do than double-check their "facts."

As for Bane and Limbaugh, not sure if it is true. It is true that Rush mentioned the possible connection, but I would tend to disagree with him.

One can assume it might be true, but I doubt it. Think of "Wolf's Bane" or "He is the Bain/Bane of my existence" and other literary uses. Bane is a perfectly logical name for an evil character.

I found a reference to a comic book titled "Batman:Bane." Apparently, avid comic book readers know Bane.

We are reading all about Bane/Bain Capital and it is easy to make connections and draw parallels that do not really exist.

I forgot to ask, did you ask who "they/them" are/were?

Hum, never drew the connection between Bane and Bain Capital, Rush, thanks for drawing that connection. Wonder what Romney looks like in that mask.:D

The Batman Campaign? - The Rush Limbaugh Show

"Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bane?"

Either Christopher Nolan is a genius at predicting political races or Rush Limbaugh is a total and utter buffoon.

As much as I admire Mr. Nolans' ability to assemble cinemaphotographic master pieces, I think the answer may be the latter...

Well, simple fact checking shows that the movie started filming in May of 2011. One must presume that the story was set before that as changing the identity of the main villain would have a huge impact on the story. Romney didn't formally announce he was running until June of 2011 though he had formed an exploratory committee prior and it was a given he was going to run. Certainly pre-cognitive ability would've been needed to know that Romney would be the nominee and that his involvement in Bain would be a subject of controversy.

Perhaps the character was selected because he is a Batman villain. Or, perhaps the character's name was selected because it is a great name for a character.

As for Rush, not sure he is right about this and I am definitely not sure he is wrong, either.

Perhaps it is merely an unfortunate coincidence.

Christopher Nolan had made all his character decisions by February of 2010 when production seemed to have started.

How he knew then that Mitt was going to seal the nomination is nothing short of miraculous...

Politics is like a spectator sport. People choose their favorite teams and keep score based on things their favorite reps say, not really what they do. Whoever has the best, most entertaining talking points usually wins the argument/discussion.

As an example, one politician might say something crazy, like the Bane Batman stuff is a big conspiracy. Meanwhile he constantly is voting in things that are destroying peoples rights and liberties in favor of govt capitalism. People won't care about anything he voted in and will vote against or for him based on the Bane Batman comments.

Science Geek here and the thing about Tesla is mostly true. The last thing Tesla was working on before he was mad to look like the laughing stock of science was a way to transmit electricity threw the air and ground. All you need was an antenna and you would have power. Absolutely no way to meter it. Ran him out of science then he was dead and that idea with him.

2 facts, 1 the theory is scientifically sound and 2 he was very close to having a working full size system. This happened to be right at the time when the electrical grid was first being built. He meant it as a free alternative. Tesla like Diesel was a Left leaning man of the people type.

These guys are capturing broadcast radio/tv waves and converting it to power small electronic devices. Wonder how much electricity my phone uses in a year.

Rectenna Converts Radio Waves To Electricity #DigInfo - YouTube

Pretty close to what Tesla was up to except Tesla was creating the radio waves to carry power not data and on a much larger scale.

WiTricity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some nut jobs are nut jobs others know something you can't comprehend so dismiss.

I agree. Especially in the U.S.
I find it amazing how the Americans declare their religious and political point of views so openly like they tell people which football team they support.

well to most it means less to them than their favorite team. Its just popular rhetoric that gets you in the club. Most will attend more entertaiment/sporting events than church services. I have a feeling the percentage who don't actually vote is highest among forum politacal comando's. But dang they can interupt a civil conversation with political puke.

Some are actually trying to convert you to their point. Openess sells. Its why fruit is sold in a stand.

Then there are the very few who actually care what happens on a scale beyound what it means for themselves. These few have to be nearly fanatics to get the simplest truth noticed in the mire of ignorence that any public forum about social issues veritably becomes.

I like to fancy myself in the third group but hey Im human and lie to myself like the rest of you.

What an interesting (and entertaining :)) thread!

I have no true advice for the first poster about the co-workers. I do have those sorts in my life and welcome their opinions (although 99% of the time their statements are of the "this is what is real" variety rather than made as their opinions). I find it interesting to try to identify the little links in their logic that lead up to them accepting the conclusions on this or that conspiracy.

You must live in the south. Best just to be quiet and don't let yourself be baited. If they figure out that you have a brain and use it, life at work will become awkward.
I had to go out and buy several guns before anyone would speak to me. (just to be considered 'normal')
The good news is that people like that have nominated a Republican candidate with so much baggage that his baggage has baggage. More and more he is showing himself and his team to be lightweight players clearly. Not capable of being president.

I think the people baiting are with Obama. No doubt to me he is US citizen, but in the past he has touted his international upbringing in different aspects for political advantage and probably book deals.

Case in point, the copy of the Hawaiian birth certificate was obviously not from the 1960s, since that format nor font existed then. Why not show the original instead?

IMO, they are baiting people to cause distraction and discredit people. Now that IS genius.

Genius but not new I think. Reading Russian and German history there is a lot of that. The quest for power more and more etc. They know what many people focus on so they provide that and do their agenda almost in the background.

There was a mention of political enemies getting together socially in past days of politics. That too might be something to do with all this about distractions used on purpose. Of course back then it may have felt to the average citizen that everything was alright because they are only political enemies and not really enemies in life with each other.
