Well mine arrived. The gray was not as gray as i hoped; it has sort of a sick purple overtune to it (the tf101 has a nicer brown back). The speakers are not very loud; ok those are the negatives - the screen is very nice; and it seems pretty smooth. I'll update later with more details after it charges. Oh yea the default player handled my set of 720p mkv (probably software decoded) without issues.

- screen is super bright on max setting without ips+; holding it up to a window where sun is shinning in it is visible in ips+ mode but a bit of glear (this is direct sunlight)
- The speaker is only on one side of the tablet; set of grills that are easy to cover; still pretty soft on max if you hold it up to your ear definitely not that useful (acer wins here; even the tf101 was a bit louder)
- The tablet hangs when doing a lot of i/o (installing a lot of apps for example)
- very good wifi performance and very strong reception (picked up the hotel across the street; which my razr does not see)-speedtest more or less maxs out at 20mb/s both up and down
-I have a trip over the weekend which is when I tend to use a tablet the most so more comments next week.
-the speaker on the tf101 are much louder
-sound thruogh iem sound a little better than the tf101 (I use a161 which are mid/upper range)
-the cord is a foot longer than the tf101; the power adapter is not as nice (the tf101 the prongs fold in)
-the build is cleaner (but still a few creeps); the layout (ports is a bit stranger
-
so far the only major disappointment are the speakers; I though the tf101 was weak these are really bad.

Please say it's not so because mine just shipped from amazon. I can't cancel my order now. How does it compare to the Toshiba tablets? Should I send it back and get a diffrent Andriod tablet?

Buttery smoothness is where Apple excels, and if that's the only thing important to you, the iPad is the better choice. However, I suspect that once this tablet gets Jelly Bean (project butter), things will be quite comparable.

In the meantime, what else can you tell us about the overall experience?

I don't see this problem. The one comment up above about the tablet hanging on installing multiple apps - yeah, I saw that last night too when I had about 50 things going at once. I really wasn't that concerned about this. What do you expect when you're installing multiple apps, listening to music, playing with Google Maps and otherwise simultaneously screwing around with the thing?

Yes, the speaker is poor. I use headphones. So not a great concern either, although I do wish I could make the speaker louder to listen to music while working at my desk. Not a deal killer. Other than that, it fits in my old TF201 case, (I was given the TF201 for Father's Day and promptly returned it once I found out about the TF700) with the only minor, minor complaint being that the relocated volume controls makes my TF201 case slightly incompatible. I can still reach the volume controls with the case on, but I really have to use the tip of my finger to reach it. Headphone jack on lower left corner makes more sense, the cord isn't draped across the screen when watching a video/movie.

Let's see, what else? Oh, the sharp ASUS logo on the back scraped up the top of my dresser the first night before I put the case on. Those cut aluminum letters rip right through hardwood apparently.

Above complaints/comments aside, I love it.

So frustrated with Newegg. They shipped out a crushed Infinity box to me, shipping box was in great shape. The chasis was bent and corner of the screen glass was actually bent too without cracking, pretty impressive for the tablet.

This was Thursday night and they cannot get me a replacement until Monday!

I wouldnt be so pissed if UPS caused the damage, but it was the newegg warehouse who screwed me. Newegg did give me a $15 refund, but thats really weak and doesnt make up for it.....

One of the main reasons I chose an Android over an Apple was the support for external storage.

Yes, I know. 64 GB is a lot, but somehow I always seem to need more eventually. The iPad did not have slot for an SDCARD or really any kind of USB connection other than the camera kit.

Using the TF201 keyboard which has both an SDCARD slot and a USB connection, I am now transferring data between the TF700, the Seagate ST910000U2 and the SDCARD using the ASUS/Android supplied File Manager.

I only had to install the "USB Host Controller" from the Market and mount the drive. The one drawback is that I needed to plug the "power only" pigtail into my laptop USB port to get enough juice to run the external drive (it's an older model.) With just the "power and data" part of the pigtail plugged into the ASUS USB port it was not quite enough.

I don't have any experience with the "smoothness" of an iPad so I can't really compare the two. However, this tablet seems very responsive. I haven't noticed any unexpected lag and the HDMI out played HD videos (from YouTube) in full HD with great sound and no lags.

I may have to consider getting Netflix now that I can use the TF700 as the bridge between my WIFI router and the Panasonic flat screen TV. (I have a 15ft mini HDMI cable which I bought through Amazon.)

I am not regretting the ASUS choice over an iPad. I guess it all depends on what is important to you.

This thread doesn't help me make the jump to an android tablet. I love android phones, can't stand Iphones, but I also can't deny that the ipad is the best tablet on the market...still.

Yes Apple, has its drawbacks, but I really want to get a tablet, preferably android. I just won't get one unless it can be considered in the same league as an ipad.

I have the same issue with mine. My wife has an iPad and it's hands down quicker and more responsive than the Infinity. I am disappointed so far especially since I absolutely don't want an iPad. The Netflix app is almost unusable. That said, it's completely reasonable that I've got something wrong in the settings, but as of now, I'm on the fence.

Any tips from people smarter than me (basically everyone)?

Well, I'm not necessarily any smarter than you, but I wonder if it's because the tablet is 1920x1080. I think this it (or maybe there's one more) at that resolution. It's quite possibly the Netflix app that's to blame, not able to adequately address that resolution. This may be a "wait and see" sort of thing, but if Asus wants to move these things, they should make darned sure that the developers are writing apps that support that resolution. I'd be willing to bet that's the major issue here with anything not running buttery smooth - it may not be the hardware but may be the software. Still, how can you know right now?

iPad has the advantage of the "you vill program it dis vay!" from Apple. I think Android is still weak there, but I'm willing to put up with it as they catch up.

I am responding to my own comment. I went to settings, customized, and switched it to high performance. it works MUCH better now! it may affect the battery life, but it is much smoother now.

The iPad is superior in some ways, but not in all. You have to weigh what it is you need from a tablet. Many people choose Android devices because you have the freedom to do what you want with your content, whereas in the Apple world, they dictate how you move stuff around. At the moment, Apple still has a good lead regarding tablet-specific apps, but I think we're going to see the tides change very soon, especially with the news that the Nexus 7 is selling REALLY well.

This is my first tablet and its pretty quirky and must take some time getting used to. Some issues typing on it such as when you accept a predictive word it does not add the space and i couldnt find the setting. Placing the cursor is flukey as well.
Other things such as when downloading a tv show failed half way through there was no way to pick up where you leftoff. In general google play leaves a lot to be desired. It shouldalsoshow download speed. Space bar also not sensitive all the way to the end of it. Screen sensitivy and smooth motion also alittle off. All these issues probably have workarounds i need to find.
I had a couple of lockups requiring reboots.
Screen is super bright and readable even in briqht sun. Speaker is weak. Paging through photos was fairly quick but still took longer than i expected to show sharp.

All sizes. But you have to understand that a good Android app developer codes for ALL screen sizes simultaneously. Meaning, if they are following Google's recommended best practices for handling screen size, their app that works on the Nexus's 7" screen will perform just as well on a bigger screen (as well as phone screen aspects).

The main purpose of ICS was to unify the programming API between tablets (Honeycomb) and phones (Gingerbread). It's now much easier for programmers to create apps for both form factors.

Mine arrives either tomorrow or the next day! I can't wait! I don't give a crap how smooth it is, I've tried the T-Prime at Best Buy. Since the processor is overclocked, I know it'll be even smoother than that and that's fine for me. I just do NOT want an iPad.
Anyway, I just can't wait. I also ordered the keyboard dock!

Well I'm traveling right now so I mostly use the tablet to web surf and read email. Other than speakers ( weighed n95 mentioned above) my two other complaints are frequent freezes in the browser, I use xscope, and occasional missed tap, but maybe those are due to freezes. Mind you I'm not talking about jerkyness but actual freezes where you can't scroll a loading page. I use the same app on my razr and tf101. The 101 could be a bit jerky but not this bad -- the razr almost never stalls. I wonder if the increased resolution is creating memory pressure and this thing needs more memory.

Also it gets a little warm around 105f with a lot of browsing. Most of the heat is upper left corner where I hold it..

Yeah, I think they could have done with an extra GB of RAM, but even full-size x86 laptops (at a similar price) will stutter on a loading page. I'm going to look at reviews, because I've been wanting this instead of a laptop partly for the 'cool' factor and partly for the superior build quality at the price.

By the way, when you say the iPad is smoother, which iPad do you mean? You have to keep in mind that the new iPad has the same graphics chip as found in the PlayStation Vita. It is the most powerful graphics chip in any mobile device on the market. Though I imagine the iPad 2 is probably smooth too; when the Infinity gets the Jelly Bean update this ought to change a bit.

In my experience, with typical OS navigations (scrolling lists, screens, etc), all three generations of iPads (and all generations of iPhones) have been very smooth. Android devices have come a long way in a few short years. Many phones are now just as smooth as iDevices, but here and there, you can still feel some stutter. I'm fairly convinced that Project Butter will address this. It's been a known issue that screen refresh CPU priority in Android was not high and they finally decided to address it.

I've yet to hear of anyone complaining that the Nexus 7 tablet is choppy in any way.

Well initial reaction is I Like It!!

I had an iPad2 for about a month. Got rid of it and got the Infinty.
Got called to a meeting in Dallas tomorrow. Will post more details when I get back.

Just got my Asus TF700T. Unpacked it in a closed room in a house built of reinforced concrete ( = lots of surrounding steel, a kind of Faraday cage). Window rollo-shutters made of aluminium were four fifths down. TF700T was 8 feet from the windows. Fired it up, started exploring its capabilities, turned off wireless network and mobile phone location functions, fired up Maps and to my amazement it had my location "accurate to 100 feet". Viewed on the map the location could not have been more accurate. How the GPS managed to pick up and use signals through all those barriers is a mystery to me.
