Any confirmation 64gb thumbdrives work?

Once rooted and the OTG app installed, does 64gb thumbdrives allow read, write of files and playback of video from the thumbdrive? I have seen mixed reports. As far as size, 32gb tends to be the threshold depending on power to the port. Not uncommon for 32gb to work and 64gb not.

Size of the thumbdrive is irrelevant; it's not like SD cards that need to follow certain standards to be supported.

I have a 500gb 2.5" USB drive plugged into mine right now. I also installed a kernel that supports NTFS so I can have larger file sizes. Works flawlessly.

I have a 500gb 2.5" USB drive plugged into mine right now. I also installed a kernel that supports NTFS so I can have larger file sizes. Works flawlessly.

how do you you do this? where do you plug it in and where do you get the hardware to do these things?

While am at this, what kind of external keyboard would work with nexus7 ?

I bought a USB OTG cable - specifically, this one right here. It plugs into the USB port on the bottom

I installed Stickmount to mount and unmount the drives when they are plugged in.

(optional) Since I wanted NTFS support, in order to not have to convert some of my large movies into smaller files, I also installed this kernel, which supports NTFS. I rip pretty much all of my physical media into digital format, and I don't like to re-encode it just to play on mobile devices.

I tested it this morning with an 8.3 GB, 720p copy of Avatar playing off a 32gb thumb drive. Video playback was smooth, and Stickmount works great to mount and unmount the drive.

Testing it with my 500gb drive was mostly just to see if it worked and to verify that it provided enough power to spin a platter drive. I don't think I'll use it much like that

Also, keyboards and mice work perfectly. I tried both a wired keyboard, and my wireless Logitech keyboard/mouse combo (plugging in the RF wireless receiver to the USB OTG cable).

that is good to know. I do not have my nexus routed as I do not understand the instructions for a 64bit windows 7 process, so will the Logitech combo above still work for me?

You don't need a rooted device to use a keyboard or mouse.

You will need a rooted device if you want to use USB Mass Storage devices like thumb drives (Stickmount, the app I suggested, is a root app), but not for peripherals.
