I'm so conflicted

PS: First time I post in this forum

So, I have a Moto Xoom... and I like it. It's a bit on the heavier side, so reading on it and viewing video can get tiring, I'm usually looking for somewhere to rest it. I use my Xoom for almost everything, and very seldom do I sit at my computer.

I have come to the conclusion that I may want a Nexus 7. I think the idea of the 7" form factor appeals to me. More portable, and so on.

My conflicts come here... I already have a 10" tablet... do I really need to get me a 7" one... what will differentiate how I use them... or will I leave my Xoom behind once my N7 arrives? Is that wasteful?

Secondly, I'm on the verge of buying it (impulse), but then I have the availability issue... the 8GB is available now, and I can likely get it by the weekend... but it's only 8GB... I feel like I should get the 16GB one... the 8GB comes with immediate* gratification (*3-5 business days) and $25 free on the Play Store. The 16GB's availability is unknown at best, and maybe when it becomes known the $25 may not be available (not a huge factor, but worth considering).

I'm so conflicted, lol (and yes, this is a first world problem, I get that). I would like some perspective if you'd be so kind

I have a 10" tablet, a Transformer Prime and now a Nexus 7 (in addition to an HTC Flyer I got on deep discount). They serve two very different purposes. The N7 is great as an e-book reader, using Tapatalk here, watching some short vids. The Prime is great (because it has the docking station) as a laptop replacement when I go out.
It's all about YOUR needs/wants.
Can you spare the coin? Go for it! I love my N7 more and more each day and find it replacing my Prime more frequently.

I have a Toshiba Thrive (beast) and got the N7 last week and love it. I use my nexus 90% of the time, but, my thrive has an HDMI output, full size usb, etc, so, it still has a purpose in life.

Reading on that monster was difficult though. I did it a lot, but, now that I have my nexus, I wonder how I managed.

Probably not much help, but, you'll find uses for your 10" tablet, if not, it should be worth something, sell it and stick the money away for your next toy after your nexus.

My Xoom was buggy and the browser would shut down often without warning
Screen is better on N7 in my opinion

Get the 16GB, you won't regret it. People say "Oh you can use the cloud for storage, so 8GB will be plenty." But in reality, when I travel I'm always looking for a wifi connection, or paying for one. If you buy a 3G/4G wifi alternative you will always have that, but again, added expense.

With only 8GB you will have only about 5GB or so left for apps, docs, media. I have 280 songs that take up 1.8GB and 12 mp4 vids that take up another 6 or so. That doesn't even include the apps I have.

All in all with the 16GB Nexus 7 I only have a bit over 800MB left. I intend on getting more storage with wifi hard drive or usb OTG drive now that I'm rooted. Love the Nexus 7, hate Google and Asus for leaving out a microSD slot and support. But it was a business decision. However this device will have limited business application due to limited storage. It will be a successful comsumer device maybe.

The 8GB one would have been worthless to me.

I believe Jelly Bean is rolling out soon for the wifi Xoom so you may want to wait and see if it makes much of a difference.

Who did you get to buy your Xoom? And how much did you actually get for it? (if you don't mind the question). I find it hard to believe that anyone would pay any real money for a Xoom.

The misnomer being there is really about 5gb for the 8gb and a little under 13gb for 16gb version of actual space. That is after netting out the format parameters, stock OS partition and OS floor.

I had a GTab 8.9 before I had my N7. I had been waiting for a 7 inch tablet worth pulling the trigger on and this was it. I love the portability of it. Since it's summer and I have large summer shorts pockets, I've been carrying my N7 with me everywhere. Couldn't do that with the Galaxy Tab. But I still love having both for different consumption purposes. You might find having both gives you versatility you never realized you were missing.

I had a Transformer Prime AND a Kindle Fire before i got my Nexus7. I sold the K-Fire to get the N-7, and i just actually posted my T-Prime on Craigslist (anyone one here interested??????). Jelly Bean is just so damn nice and I can't believe it, but I think I prefer the 7" form factor over the 10.1" Prime. My Prime was rooted with an early JB rom loaded (which was pretty slick), but ever since i opened my Nexus7, I just find myself grabbing it more frequently.

If nothing else, if you are not short on cash and can afford it, get the Nexus7 and then decide if you want to keep you Xoom. Oh, and i have the 8gb version, but i stream most everything and don't keep much on the local storage. Works for me, but not everyone.

I sold my GTab 10.1 WiFi 16GB for $250 Friday @ 2PM on CL, ordered my n7 8GB at 3PM, and it was at my door at 9:30AM Saturday.
I haven't had a single regret. The one concern I had was that I wouldn't like the smaller screen, but that went by the wayside as soon as I turned this thing on... This device is an upgrade in every way, and I quickly discovered that I'm a 7" tablet kind of guy. Games like Dead Space and ME:Infiltrator are infinitely easier to play, the 720p video playback is fluid and super crisp, the viewing angles are ridiculous, and (dum dum dummmmmm) I CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE SCREEN IN SUNLIGHT, a problem that plagued my GTab10.1 terribly.

I was also a little hesitant to go down from 16GB to 8GB, but I've got my full array of apps and games installed with about a gig and a half to spare.

Overall, this is easily the best Android device I've yet to own, and I've had my share, for sure. To top it off, once I installed the 4.1.1 update, installed the linaro kernel (kept it at 1.3, though. But, the linaro kernel OC's the GPU to 484MHz), got init.d working, zram working, and /data remounted for performance, the experience went from great to absurdly amazing. This thing is pure butter!

OC'd to 1.6, it quads 6200+, but the downsides are it gets hot and you can't charge it while using it (battery doesn't drain, but it doesn't charge, either). At 1.3 with default governor & scheduler, it still smokes the One X with the zram, /data remount, and linaro optimizatons.

Hope this testimonial helps get you off the fence and on the Play Store to order your n7 :-D

P.S. I used the $25 credit to buy Final Fantasy III, Apex Launcher, and a couple of other apps I've had my eye on for a while

Thanks, Jay! Though, I'm not new to Android Forums, just new to the Nexus 7 section

So, if I use my phone as a guide, I don't normally keep movies on my device. Usually if I rent something, I'll download it before I watch it (to avoid buffering), and then it goes away. I don't spend my time ripping DVDs and loading them on my XOOM or my GNex. The only thing I keep stored is music and books. My GNex has pinned the music I listen to most often and with my apps and all it is up to 5.5 GB... so if the N7 has about 5GB of usable space, I may be better off with a 16GB. Now if it would become available... lol.

I don't really keep media on my devices; I get most of my music from online radio stations and stream my movies from my PC, Netflix, or Crackle.. I pretty much just keep apps and games on it, so going down to 8gb wasn't a huge deal for me..

I was in the same quandary, but came to realize that 7s and 10s both have their place.
From my experience I'd say that if it is within your means then get the thing that you really want or you will be wondering how it would be instead of enjoying what you have.

If it isn't within your means to get what you want, then get what you can and rejoice in your share.

I don't mean that in a hard-hearted or mean-spirited way.
I'm just coming from the perspective of a long time gadget freak who has not always been able to get exactly what he has wanted, but found that when he tried sometimes he found that he got what he needed (thank you Rolling Stones) and was happy enough to get it!
