HTC 6200 SDHC capacity

It could be, but remember that the Eris came out the day after the Droid, and the Droid from the beginning advertised support for 32 GB cards.
True, but didn't 32 GB cards not really come out until early 2010? If that's the case, Motorola said that either because they knew they were coming soon, or they already knew on paper they would work. Technically, while released at the same time, the Eris was still a much older phone. Since the Eris was essentially a rebranded Hero, which came out mid-2009, they probably just reused the Hero's spec sheet.

I can't see a reason why the Eris couldn't see a 32 GB card. Its well within the SDHC standard, and I can't think of any reason that 16 GB would be a limit.

My Nokia E63 (which is older than the Eris by a full year) only supports 16 GB officially, but does support 32 GB.

fwiw, the old CNET review says 32 gb is supported for the Hero:

...oops as a noob I can't post links.... you can find it with a quick search of the CNET reviews site.

anyway, there's nothing in my pdf manual about max size, just a note that the slot is SD 2.0 compatible.

You're right about that. I am pretty sure that the tech specs on the HTC official Eris page once said that it supported up to 16 GB SD cards, though it now no longer says that.

I'll be sure to put my Rezound's 16G card in my Eris once I get a 32G Class 10 to replace it. Can't see as if you'll ever really use all 32G on that phone though, at least not without difficulty. I suppose that if you were using it strictly as a music player it might come in handy, but that's an awful lot of memory for the ADR6200 to sort through.

So I went ahead and bought a 32gb card... no luck. Can't get it to format.
