Ha! You think y'all are jealous? I live in the greater metro area but not in the offered area. I guess we know where all of those 8GB models they thought were going to sell like hotcakes are going.
Basically, they're laying fiber to create tv/internet bundles like you would get from a cable provider except much faster. The tv side was the almost a surprise part of the whole deal though.
I work for a major not-for-profit cultural institution here and I'm hoping we somehow luck into getting the GNet here. (Although, I think it is pretty cool that we already blast wi-fi out onto our lawn. Just wish it was, uh, greener than it is at the moment.) I know we already do some work with Google as it is but I'm just not sure in how big of a scope beyond the art project. ( The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art - Google Art Project )
It's funny because KC, Kansas was the initially announced side of it but KC, Missouri seems to have the most neighborhoods listed and Fiber HQ.
I just can't believe all I went through to get my N7 and they are giving it away to the lucky folks in KC that sigh up for the TV package (to use as the remote no less).
Stomping off to check real estate and job listings in KC...
About the fiberoptic cables, I had heard that Google was buying a bunch of old or incomplete FO cable networks called "dark fiber". Looks like Google wants to start high speed internet. I'm in.
