Root Hype around cyanogen?

Try it and decide for yourself. Backing up, flashing, and then restoring is no big deal. I really liked Cyanogen but ran into a few irritating bugs. Yesterday I flashed Fab's take on Pete's ROM and for the past 24 hours have been playing with that. It is not like you are locking yourself into a 30 year mortgage on the ROM you chose. Hey, I have restored previous Nandroid setups while stuck in traffic. We all have different criteria in what we like and dislike (some hate a ROM because they don't like the battery icon or lock screen). I become a fanatic for whatever is the ROM de jour but will be the first to say that something more interesting comes along, hasta la vista baby! There are still users here that remain loyal to the original Sholes ROMS and it would take a crowbar to pry them away. More power to them. They are getting pleasure out of their phone and that is what this is all about. Enjoy the Rom buffet. Fill your plate, spit out what you don't want and enjoy the ride :D One more clich

ok... here is the dif..... to best of my knowledge, someone add if i missed something

MOST roms are built off of update.zip. they take an update.zip and replace files and make it their own version.

From what i hear bout cyanogen, is its built from the ground UP. Like the source. No one helped or built it, its all built up from what i gather :)

like i said, someone help if i missed stuff

Okay.......

So what sets it apart from Bugless Beast, Smoked Glass, or any of the other ROMs out there? I would have to be sold on its merits before I flash it. Is it just "built from the ground up" but looks and runs basically the same?

It is immensely faster than any other ROM I've used, even at stock clocks. At full 1GHz and above it just screams. Plus it has a perfectly functional 3D app drawer and a lot of little settings that are pretty convenient.

Lots of little extras you won't notice in other ROM's. You have a reboot option when you hold the power button, you can see exact times of calls made or received, you can use apps2sd, you get the most up to date fixes from the aosp unlike all the other rom's building off the same old motorola ese53 base. There are many other features it has but if you are interested enough then just flash it! Heck you could have done that in the time it has taken to read and reply to this thread.

Cyanogen is all hype. There is absolutely nothing special about it, and I definitely wouldn't waste my time flashing it.

:D

For what it's worth... and I've told a few people this via PM now... Ever since ROMs first started popping up everywhere, I've been flashing new ROMs at least twice a day. More often than not, it was closer to four times a day. I finally bit the bullet about two weeks ago and flashed to Cyanogen. Ever since then, the only time I touch the ROM is when an updated version of Cyanogen comes out.

It's all the little things that leave me hooked... a reboot option, 360 degree auto-rotate, the ability to update rather than flash and start over when new releases come out, The most stable rom by far that I have used, Apps2SD which I haven't played with yet... but it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside knowing I have something new to try when I run out of other new things to discover with this ROM.

Just because a huge group of people are jumping on the bandwagon doesn't mean there's nothing but hype surrounding something. Sometimes the attention is warranted. This, IMO, would be one of those times. But to each their own... I don't see much point in trying to convince someone I don't know to do something that wouldn't affect me. All I can say is that I'm using Cyanogen and I'll never look back.

If you try Cyanogen with the mindset of "I don't think it will be anything special"...you will be right. For one, we all bring prejudices with us when trying something new. The second thing is that I noticed every time I update to a newer version of Cyanogen, it runs a little sluggish for about the first day. After that...lights out! This rom is just so much more fluid than anything else. I can flick through the 7 screens on my phone, while quickly pulling up the 3D app drawer (which works better than Helix 2 on any other phone I have seen), and I can't get this ROM to hick up. Live Wallpapers will bog it down like all other ROM's so keep that in mind.

Another big plus is that they have integrated full screen browser (notification panel disappears if you enable full screen). I'm sure others will eventually have this on their roms but the browser scrolling and pinch to zoom appears to be more seamless (but that could be in my head).

After having some issues with older versions of CM (5.0.5.3 is now the current ROM), I went to BB 0.9 cause I hadn't played with that ROM in a while...I was very disappointed. It just wasn't Cyanogen...I could just "feel" the difference.

Fadelight said it pretty well...do what you want to do. I flashed it because someone started a thread asking if anyone had tried it...I figured what the hell? VERY glad I did...your impressions of it may be different and despite "Everyone" talking about CM, there are a lot of other ROM's out now and every one of them keeps getting better. When I try some other ROM just for the heck of it and find it better than CM...I'll switch. But in my opinion...there is no better ROM at this time.

Benchmarks recently posted at Alldroid showed the Droid cyanogen build to be no faster than any of the other ROMs...

Droid ROM Benchmarks *UPDATED 3/22*

I've used one of the Cyanogen ports by Koush, and it was nice and has some unique features (360 rotation), but I didn't find it significantly faster/better than other ROMs I've used...

At stock speeds at its the same but I havent seen any other rom that can get 15+ mflops at 1.2ghz with jit enabled.

Cyanogenmod has so many little extras like the full screen browser, 360 rotation, changing the color of text message notification led, window transition speed options, and more. If you use it for a few days and explore the settings for native apps and the system you will find lots of little things that dont seem like that big a deal until you switch back to a rom without them.

Yes. I've been running it >a month, no problems. After b0.5 the big bugs were fixed, now it just keeps improving.
It is. I have a few nights of the week that I must use my phone for work and make and receive plenty of calls and I havent had a problem at all.

Great. flashing now!

Something no one mentioned, when the soure tree is updated at AOSP your OS becomes more stable and bug free when new code is compiled. The wonderful world of linux, and open source. Everyone else is using base code from Moto, which will remain the same until they release something else. Don't take this as flame bait, what you like is your preference.

Actually I did mention that haha, it's all good though. That is IMO the best thing about Cyanogen ROM's. Other developers are updating every 2 or 3 days with little to no difference where as Cyanogen updates every 2 or 3 days because he has added in any bug fixes or tweaks found in the AOSP. If anyone here runs Linux on there PC then you can compare it to the update manager and how often it updates. That is what Cyanogen does for us.

I am hoping that installing it correctly, rather than through the Nandroid method, improves the battery life I was seeing.

I got used to going 14 hours and only using 50-60% battery!

Guess what. I said I'd never switch from Bugless Beast but after reading that, I have a new project for tonight. :D

I love turning on my Linux PC in the morning after using it the night before and seeing a dozen updates. Makes me feel like people are actually doing SOMETHING.

Agreed.

I've flashed everything.. for a while now. This is the first time I've hung my hat in a while... smoothest and coolest ROM Ive every enjoyed. And with the new integration with ROM Manager it will bring many more people into the fold. Although swapping out recovery roms is easy... it has dissuaded many.
