Root Leak Question

So, I was rooted with CleanRom, and I went back to GB and locked to get ready for the OTA update. I figured I could handle stock for a few days. Well, it has been 10 minutes and I hate it. I forgot how awful it is compared to ICS (even if it is just an ICS ROM on top of GB).

Anyway, I've had the latest leak sitting on my PC's desktop just begging to be loaded on to my phone. If I install the leak, will I still be able to receive the official OTA update? I remember reading that the leak would have the same version numbers as the official update, so you phone would be stuck with the leak (unless you got S-OFF). Is that still the case? I've just seen a lot of people loading the leak around here, and it seemed liked most of them hadn't even thought about getting S-OFF. Did some new information come out that I missed saying that the official update would have a later number or whatever, so you'd be fine if you installed the leak? Thanks for any help.

yes. that is very much still the case. if the leak happens to be the OTA,then youll have it. if it doesnt, then you wont recieve the OTA,being on a leak. updater script looks for official release numbers. in order to get the official version, youll have to run another ruu.

nope,no new info. for the most part, folks just "do" without fear of the consequences, wich is not smart,IMO. i never reccomend installing leaks on an s-on device. wait for official versions.

my advice would be not to worry about the OTA. its not going to give you something special that the ruu wont. continue enjoying your custom rom until an ruu is availabe for the official, release version. when it is,make a backup, run the ruu. clear storage in hboot,re-unlock. reinstall or launch recovery and flash root files,or flash your rom of choice.

Scotty, after reading this i have a question. Do we need to be relocked to receive the OTA? I am unlocked, rooted, but on stock recovery and have made no other changes to the devive.

EDIT: NVM i found the answer

hopefully the answer you found was no,you do not need to be relocked.(since that is the correct one ;))

as long as your on a mildly to not modified release version rom,and on the stock recovery, the ota should happen.

it will remove root, and restore any bloat youve frozen or deleted,as it is replacing the system image. afterward, youll need to relaunch recovery and reflash superuser(use this superuser on ICS: [16.07.2012] SuperSU v0.94 - xda-developers )

It is looking like some people are possibly getting the OTA update. One person even posted a pic.

It seems that the software version ends in a .12 instead of .10 like the leak. Does this now mean that phones with the leak will get the OTA? I'm not sure if what you said above negates that or not (I'm somewhat computer literate, but obviously not nearly as much as compared to others...).

that is correct. the official OTA ends in .12 instead of .10.

also correct, phone running .10 will not recieve the OTA.

a leak for .12 was not released to the public, since the differences are minor. i would still wait for an official ruu to appear in footballs filefactory folder FileFactory Folder View - Vigor before running one

Is it possible to run an RUU (flash the file through Hboot)on an un locked and rooted phone? OR do i need to unroot first?

you will have to relock to run an RUU. if youre on a custom rom(or possibly a heavily modded stock rom),relocking will typically cause a security warning and lock you into hboot until you either:
1)run the ruu
2)re-unlock(you can use your original token)

so if you see the security warning, dont panic, its normal :)

Just wondering when this all changed? Seemed back in Eris days and even the dinc days if you had a leak and the update was higher than what you had it pushed? I've had custom roms that wanted to pull updates on the Incredible is this something new for rezound where if you have a leak it won't update?

couldnt tell you when it changed. these days the updater scripts look very specifically for the official release build numbers. you dont need to be running the most current official release, but you do need to be on an official release.

its possible its changed again, and those on leaks will get the OTA,but until we see that happening, the above is correct to the best of my knowledge. i tested it pretty extensively on my thunderbolt,so its been going on at least that long ;) i ran several different leaks for several days and not one of them would ever OTA. had to put an offical release build back on in order for the OTA to happen.

as far as the incredible wanting to update custom roms, those particular roms were obviously not modded to prevent OTAs,wether they were roms based on official releases,or leaks,i cant say... i havent tested with it.

it is possible the change happend along with the devices switch from mtd (eris, inc, evo) to emmc boot (thunderbolt,inc2,rezound,etc)

Ahh I skipped the Thunderbolt and used the Dinc for looonnng time so I didn't think twice about throwing the leak on here. Thanks for the info!!

the only thing that makes it different on the rezound,is the security state of the phone. if you unlock with htcdev, and leave s-on,then id highly recomend not flashing leaks,as you cannot go back.

if you go the extra distance to turn s-off,then there is no harm playing with the leaks, you can always go back if you want. an s-off rezound will behave and react just like your s-off inc.

its when you leave s-on that things are quite a bit different and you need to be careful what you do. :)

I haven't done anything to this phone yet, haven't even bothered to root it, but i figured there was no chance in h311 I'd want GB again after messing with ICS. I usually get my geek on when the weather sucks ;) I'm just looking for a change log, if the .12 has something I want I may do something if not I'll stick with .10 until I get bored and root it.

So does this mean if we install the .12 RUU today and an official update pushes out sometime in the hopefully near future, we will be able to receive the officiall OTA even though we are on the .12 leak?
