Help Wifi Sleep

It seems that my wifi is sleeping even though I have it set not to. After a few minutes of my screen being off, I do not get emails, WhatsApp messages, etc. As soon as I hit the power button to bring the screen back on, though, they all immediately come in.

Anyone else see this or have any ideas?

I was having that problem, too, particularly would notice when you wake up the phone fairly often it would take a few seconds to reconnect to WiFi as though it had been SLEEEEEPING, even though it's set to never sleep! I got fed up and did a factory reset, which seems to have fixed it. However, I'm actually exchanging mine because it continues to ignore my custom ringtones (on the stock email client). I have a refurbished one arriving tomorrow (uh oh...)

They're working on getting root back over at XDA and that's really the best solution to fix the inherent quirks that every android phone seems to have. BTW my boss got his phone the same day from the same vendor and his stock email client notifications are screwed up, too.....

Spent the lion's share of the day trying to get to the bottom of this issue, and I think I have (though no fix). It seems like this is a Sense 4 issue, as there are threads over on xda with the same issue on an Evo 4G. Same issue. Push notifications are delayed when the phone is in sleep. It is extremely frustrating and HTC better be working on a fix.....

Just as an update, I did get my refurbished phone the other day, and no surprise, it has the same issues with WiFi sleep and improper notifications sounds over the email client (when using Microsoft Exchange), so nothing has really changed for me. I had to do a battery pull this morning for it to even connect to my WiFi at work, so that really sucks

First they call their crippled multi-tasking a "feature" and now wifi connection giong to sleep is a "feature." Man some of you guys must REALLY love Sense or REALLY hate Touchwiz or REALLY hate big screens to have chosen the Inc4g over the SGS3!

Speaking strictly for myself it's that we had such good luck with the OG Incredible (still a kickass phone, I gave it to my daughter- wish I had it back) and Incredible 2, we figured we couldn't go wrong with the latest and greatest. I'm sure a little CM9 will fix this mess- it's just a matter of when...

Plus the size of the Galaxy... I can see people from across the room holding these things and it just doesn't look right: bigger and bigger and bigger, some of us are a little leery of that trend, and we wanted to support something smaller.

Your point is well taken, however. Certainly on specs (and features I've been reading about) the Galaxy has us beat.

But yes, I am more than a little pissed off about the wifi sleep issue. The multitasking isn't an issue, though.

If HTC would fix the wifi sleep and reprogram the task switcher button to a menu button and eliminate the on-screen menu button, the Inc4G would be just about perfect.

I just don't get the track record of crap though. I can understand the galaxy nexus radio sucking, and some past Samsungs having horrible gps, but ALL of the SGS 2 variants are on ICS now, which is more than we can say for HTC/Motorola/Pantech/LG/Sony etc. Also, the GPS on the SGS 3 has been noted by many people (and I can add myself to the list) to lock on in a matter of 3 seconds or less and keep a strong lock using 10+ satellites.

If Samsung is dominating the handset sales numbers and the SGS2 and SGS3 are far and away the best sellers it seems to me like they would be excellent phones. I mean I don't think tens of millions of people would have bought a "track record of crap." Definitely some, because not all consumers are aware consumers, but tens of millions? Nahhhhh, it must be a good phone

The HTC Inc4g I think is better than any other android on VZW except for SGS3. But yeah, my wife LOVES the smaller 4" screen and if you want smaller it's really the only option. Plus we cancelled our home internet and just use VZW LTE Hotspot so she won't run into the wifi issue.

Yeah I guess if I didn't watch Netflix, or read e-books or play a lot of games, I wouldn't be ok going to such a large screen size. But since that makes up a decent amount of my phone use, it is a welcome change from the iphones 3.5 to the SGS3s 4.8. But if i was mainly making calls and texting, I would want a much smaller form factor to be like a compact phone phone and not a multimedia device.

BTW, I complained about this today. I think this problem is worse than people realize, basically makes push notifications totally unreliable. I also noticed I'm not automatically connecting to WiFi at all in places where I should. Hopefully some other people have noticed this by now, and they'll complain as well...

With about ten million sold there should be an affordable ebay model to play with when the next latest and greatest comes along. For now, when I watch movies or net flix or sports I guess it will be the old fashioned way. My 50 inch flat screen, while reclining and using my 4g3 as a phone.

According to HTC, Smart Sync only kicks in after your phone has been asleep for 15 minutes between midnight and 7 am, yet our problem seems to occur throughout the day. Do you think they just went nuts with it on the Incredible? On pg 156 of the user's manual (the PDF) they talk about this, but the choices to modify the Peak Sync > Smart Sync as it says in the manual don't really exist.

Thanks for taking an interest in this. It seems myself and the OP are pretty lonely on this rather important topic.

I don't think SmartSync is the problem. There's an app that turns that off. I installed the app but still have the problem. Of course, that assumes the app actually works which is hard to verify.

I think I have solved the issue. There are apps in the Market that keep wifi alive while in sleep mode. I installed this one last night and my push notifications are suddenly real time again. It looks to be a pretty small impact on battery life, but I will monitor.

Of course, had HTC not decided to put the wifi to sleep 15 minutes after the screen goes off, this wouldn't be an issue......

The only place I've ever seen the Smart Sync option was setting up a POP3/IMAP email account using the Mail app. It's one of the options for how often to sync mail.

Editorial: I've been dealing w/ HTC support a lot the past week trying to resolve an issue where stock mail app does not sync gmail. I have to say their techs are not very knowledable. I am not sure if they're just new to ICS, or new to this phone, or what. For example, one of the techs swore up and down that "push mail" was one of the sync frequency options using the stock mail app. I even sent a screen shot... and still got a response that the push mail setting does not exist :|

I never asked you this, but are you using Microsoft Exchange? This is where most of my problems with this exist. I'm on vacation right now, so I'll report back later with that app you suggested, but I have this sneaking suspicion that the issues at least partially lie with HTC and Exchange. An obvious solution would have been to use a different client, like K-9 mail, but they don't have support for 2010 Exchange.

To sum up my situation, is that I believe that Smart Sync has been activated on our phones, even though the choice isn't really there (at least when setting up an Exchange account), and furthermore that Smart Sync, which is supposed to only kick in during "deep sleep" (15+ minutes asleep) between the hours of midnight and 7am, instead it is doing it at all times of the day. Other people don't report having that problem (perhaps maybe their phones aren't asleep for 15+ minutes to give a true test), but this is my second phone, and they've both exhibited the same behavior

Yes, my email is Exchange based. And I am not using the stock email client, as it is nowhere near as powerful as I need/want. I am using TouchDown. I also see the same delayed notifications while using WhatsApp, however, so I am not 100% on board with this just being an HTC/Exchange issue.

By the way, day 2 with the app that prevents wifi sleep and push notifications are still perfect. Yesterday was an unusual battery usage day, so I cannot yet comment on the affect the app has on battery life. Today is pretty standard, so I should have a decent idea tonight.

I have issues with Wifi and Microsoft Exchange. And I'm really thinking it's MS Exchange because I had the OG Inc, Razr, Rezound, and now Inc 4g. ALL of the phones stop pushing Exhange notifications regardless if the wifi is asleep. Obviously it's not a Sense issue as I had a Razr for a few months and the problem continued.

If work email is important that time/day, I don't use wifi. It sucks, but I don't know if it's the email client on the phones end, or MS, or what.

I had no such issues on my Inc2.

I don't know what to tell you then. What were you running on the Inc2 that is different than the phones I listed? Mine were all stock (just upgraded to whatever the companies put out). Were you unlocked, rooted, all that jazz? Did you load a different version of Android? Obviously something is going on from OG Inc to all the newer phones.

Battery is definitely impacted by keeping the wifi out of sleep, but not enough to be a huge issue. My math says it is reducing the battery by maybe 5-10%. I will still easily make it from when I get up (7:00) to when I plug it in for the night (10:30-11:00). That's all I need.
