Root [Rogers & S4] To ROOT or not to ROOT

Just trying to figure out if i should root my HOX or not. I dont really customize the crap out of it, I just run nova launcher. To me the only thing would be that i could put on Jelly Bean pretty much I think?

It depends what you want to do with the phone? Are you looking for better battery? Are you looking for more customisation options etc.

I'm very, very pro root, but understand it's not for everyone. To me, titanium backup and the ability to backup apps and app data is worth it alone, but I'm a tinkerer too and I like the additional theming options root can bring.

You've the Snapdragon LTE version yeah?

Yeah, I mainly root to get updates quicker, install a few mods like the battery % mod, Extended Quick Settings and Advanced Power Menu. Also because bugs or things I don't like about a phone are normally fixed by a mod, like the 3 dot menu which I hated so rooting helped me get rid of it.

That's one reason why I stay with ARHD because it's basically Stock but with a few add-ons that I like. The other benefits like better battery are just a bonus really...

Unlocking the bootloader from HTCDev.com only voids the software warranty i.e. if you brick your device while playing around flashing ROM's.

If you have problems with hardware when you're rooted then you're still covered by the warranty.

In my experience HTC have been good anyway and fixed my phone when I was rooted for a non hardware issue..

I think your either a rooter or your not. I always like to explore gadgets to their full potential. Once i finally rooted my desire and got my head around how android works, there was no turning back. I rooted my HOX from day one. Worth it imo for a custom recovery alone to be able to take a complete backup of your phone. Remove bloatware, better battery life, speed etc, the list goes on. Ultimately the choice must be yours and yours only though. Just never do anything without reading up on it as much as you can, until you understand what you are doing.

Yes that is what I have. The Rogers branded one. Only thing I really want is updates faster but not sure if that is really worth it. Dont care to customize the heck out of it. Battery life, how much better is it?

I know HTC will unlock the boot loader, should it do this or need to do this I assume?

Just want to know as much as I can before doing so.

Go to the XDA forums and go to the HTC One X development forum and there should be ROM threads in there.

Have a scan of the link above, there's a ton of info there, let us know if you're stuck with anything. Or if you want to lay out what you reckon the process is before hand, we'll be able to check it over for you.

Thanks to htcdev, the procedure is relatively easy, the only downside is the bootloader unlock factory resets the phone.

And I reckon I see about a 20-25% increase in battery life thanks to installing a custom ROM.

NO, you have to be rooted to use titanium backup. before rooting you can use my backup pro.

I have no idea sorry, i used the guide here as i've got the international version.

so i decided not to root good job too as it ****ed up!! power/unlock button wouldnt unlock then screen went crazy, flickering pixelated very messy. gone back for repair, i hope as i did drop if first day i had it and marked casing so fingers crossed

Those instructions look fine btw (really, really sorry it's taken a while). Once you've unlocked the bootloader, you'd flash a recovery (TWRP seems the best option for the XL), then select a ROM to flash and off you go.
