Root Is TV-out Possible?

Hi guys, this is my first time posting here after 3 months of lurking.

I've got my wife's old Galaxy Prevail, which has been deactivated since she moved on to a Transform Ultra, that I've basically re-purposed into a pocket wifi/emulation/gaming device, and I've put CM7 on it. So far I've been quite impressed with it's emulation and 3D performance, for a "low-end" smartphone the Prevail has a LOT of spunk.

That being said, I was wondering if it's possible, either by use of an accessory or an app, or a software hack, if I can get any sort of TV-out functionality, so I can turn it into a pocket console.

No. Even some of real galaxys can't do that. I had a fascinate and it had hardwear that support it but kernel driver or something never released. Even if prevail had hardware there no software to use

I was hoping the Prevail would have shared enough of the innards the main Galaxy line to pull it off, particularly with an USB>MHL adapter -- kinda like when graphics card makers get lazy and use the identical chips in their high and low end lines, but just leave stuff dormant in the low end line.

I'm sorry to hear about the TV-out situation with the Fascinate. However, if there is another phone that has that hardware and has a functioning TV out driver, would it not be possible to rip it out of that phones' ROM and transplant it into the Fascinate?:idea:

Galaxy s got few variations all with hardware but only captivate had it working and fascinate n mesmerize didn't. Or something like that. S2 can. Idk y they couldn't do it probably gotta be experienced programmer to do all that. A lot of fascinate devs had moved on to other devices when I had it.,

And heres my billion dollar idea; why are there no network tvs being made? I know theres tvs that can connect to the internet, stream media and do Netflix, but why not a real networked tv? Without having your pc in the living room, you could access the pc through the tv. That would be something to make me purchase another tv. The tv would come with a remote/slide out mini keyboard. For the mouse, it can be a touch pad built into the remote/keyboard. Or could also make a blue tooth mini keyboard. Just an idea

Not good for gaming tho... Has a delay... And with tv there is an audio delay (phone speaker plays sound, on pc the video is behind...)

Besides, wouldn't it be far simpler in concept to have an app that would merely grab whatever's in the framebuffer, package it into an HDMI-compatible transmission format and shove it out the USB port?:stupido2:

Oddly, I may have found an app that does just that.

I found HDMwIn for Evo 4G while searching Google play.

While it seems to be written with the Evo 4G, it seems compatible (read: doesn't crash) with the Prevail, as I was able to install and launch it. However, I don't have an MHL cable to actually test the supposed HDMI mirroring with.

When I click "Start Mirroring", it says "Cable Undetected", as though it polled the port and failed to find a cable, as opposed to trying to interface with an HDMI chipset (or what-have-you) and failing. Perhaps it may be able to find and work with an USB>MHL adaptor.....cguru:

Like I said mine was a ghetto way. And its a compromise to getting a rare cable like an HDMI from USB.

I have a mini USB to HDMI cable that I got with my HD video camera. I wonder if using the mentioned app will work. If it does work, Ill report back with pics of it working.


EDIT: I thought it was a mini USB but was wrong. The USB end is a little too large for the Prevails USB port. Damn.

sounds like your cable is mini usb like you thought, but the prevail uses micro usb.

You'd think they'd use better terms to seperate the difference between connector sizes than two synonyms.

Anyway, the connector I'm talking about is one of these. I plan on getting one myself once all my bills for the month are accounted for.

Keep in mind that if it is true that the Prevail chipset does not have MHL circuitry tucked away somewhere, then we may need to connect it in this order to get the phone and TV to see each other (my best guess):

1.Connect a separate USB charge cable into the port on the side of the MHL adapter.

2. Connect TV to HDMI side of MHL adapter, then turn TV on.

3. Connect USB side of MHL connector to Prevail's USB port.

4.Activate HDMwIn, cross your fingers, and click "Start Mirroring".

Hopefully, the app knows to poll the USB port for any active connections. Since devices connected with HDMI look for each other's handshake signals (that thing where they tell each other their display capabilities, I forget the term they use for it), the TV should already be sending feelers through the HDMI cable>MHL adapter, and hopefully HDMwIn can see it and respond without a dedicated hardware chipset.:alberteinstein:

Nope, its not a mini, its the shape of the micro but about twice the length.

Argh, I've seen that before on an old Verizon flipphone of mine. I think its supposed to be a USB cable with a proprietary connector so they can force you to only buy their cables.

My friend was developing such a kernel for the Samsung galaxy s epic 4g. It was wayyy too buggy and he couldn't publish it because you couldn't even use emergency 911 calling. So... no its not possible. Sorry
