If your baseband is ZV4 or ZV5 (in the phone settings/about phone scroll down to Baseband version) then the first guide in the All Things Root Guide sticky is the one you want to use. The Gingerbreak.apk is the safest method to use, but it just takes anywhere from one try to ten.
Rule of thumb: if after 12 minutes it doesn't cause your phone to reboot then pull the battery and try again.
Be patient it will work. It took 5 or 6 tries on mine. Only took 45 sec on the spare I purchased.
