Some Android and Google problems

Starting to hate Andorid and some Google programs...

I recently got a Galaxy Nexus and Googlized everything a bit. Switched to Gmail, Google Reader, Google Talk, Google Drive [...].

Just because it's Android doesn't mean you have to use all the products that the GooGods spit out.

I use SugarSync for KeePass between 3 devices and it works great.

Other chat clients may provide better functionality - however I can't say for certain because I mainly use FB messenger now.

From my experience, I haven't had any of the issues on my GNex with Google Talk. When Google Drive makes something available offline, you can easily access it from the Google Drive app. Hopefully you can make it work for you.

I know and it doesn't have this particular problem but it's three times more expensive. Also I'm unfortunately forced to use Dropbox and I really don't want yet another cloud storage thing running in the background.

Switching from ICQ to Google Talk was already a pain. Don't really want to do that again.
Also it's still no reason for this program to screw up like this. It comes bundled with the device so it should at least work properly.

When Google Drive makes something available offline, you can easily access it from the Google Drive app. Hopefully you can make it work for you.

Create an empty file and call it... whatever.lkj. Now download it with Google Drive and convince Android to even try opening it with anything (preferably a program of your choice).
Won't work. It doesn't know the extension so it refuses to do anything at all with it.

I'll have to admit I have the free plan on SugarSync so didn't even think about cost on higher volumes.

I have a free plan on SugarSync at 38GB so and Dropbox at 19GB so... Google Drive is Meh. I use it primarily for Google Docs sharing with classmates. Anyway:

1. Is your phone's sleep mode enabled? Its made by Samsung so it may have the power saver feature in the settings.

2. As been said before, open the Google Drive app and you can see everything from it. No need to go into a file manager to look for the files themselves. So Drive storing it in its own location is something that can be ignored.

7. I think you're better of just removing all Google Drive data and redownloading.

As for Google Drive, Its in initial state and as far as I can see is in no shape to compete with DropBox or Sugarsync yet. Heck it seems even going through the web browser to upload stuff to SkyDrive is faster and more reliable at times. And Dropbox does not actually run in the background unless you set it up to actually download the files itself into your phone.

Don't think that's it. I often just put it in the dock on my desk and let it display the clock. Don't think it enables any kind of sleep mode in that state. There are also no option like that to be found anywhere.

But that's the point. I can't open it from within drive or any file manager. Android doesn't know the file extension so it won't do anything. Not even offering me to choose which program I want to open it with.
The only way to open it is from within KeePass and I don't feel like navigating there every single time as it's just cached so the directory will likely change after every update.

That's odd. Normally Android should ask you what to use to open it. Oh well, looks like you're stuck with probably going to have to switch to either SugarSync or Dropbox.

In a perfect scenario, a Google android phone and Google software and app products would all work flawlessly in perfect harmony.

In practical reality, numerous independent apps simply work better than their Google app counterparts. Luckily we have those options to choose from and you shouldn't feel obligated to use Google apps just because android is Google.

How about this. I downloaded 4.0.4 on Tuesday. Now my S2 is ruined. Battery lasts 20 minutes. Samsung says "too bad, can't do anything about it". Sprint is sending me a replacment phone. Hope it doesn't have the dread OS. Mark my words. This is the biggest disaster in device history. Let's see how many millions of phones they ruin.

How about this. I downloaded 4.0.4 on Tuesday. Now my S2 is ruined. Battery lasts 20 minutes. Samsung says "too bad, can't do anything about it". Sprint is sending me a replacment phone. Hope it doesn't have the dread OS. Mark my words. This is the biggest disaster in device history. Let's see how many millions of phones they ruin.

Had the same thing happen to me with a Motorola update to 2.3.6 last year. Saw lots of posts complaining about it breaking the battery meter. They never fixed it to this day and simply posted a notice on their support page that its caused by plugging the phone into a dock or PC instead of wall charger when battery is low but they never fixed it.

A .dat file will not open even on a Windows PC.

It's a lot easier to associate applications with extensions on Windows, even .dat files.

I tried multiple times to convince my phone to use KeePassDroid for my. kbdx files with no luck.

Sorry should have made myself clear. Android asks you what you want to open it with if it was a file recognized by the device that you can open with a file that you have. I don't have any files I can do that with on Google Drive so I can't test from that since I don't even have GDrive on my PC. Its just for online docs in my purposes. But whenever I open files from the MySugarSync folders such as PDF files, if I did not have a default program set Android asks me which PDF reader I want to open it with.

See? this is why i don't upgrade firmware. i flashed a ROM to my old Optimus V by mistake (thought it was part of the rooting process haha) and while it was neat it sucked the battery dry super fast. same for firmware, if it ain't broke, don't fix.

I always update firmware and stuff like this never happens. It may be badluck for some, installation errors and stuff. Flashing or upgrading isn't bad. If there's a problem reinstall it. Nothing is perfect, there are chances of errors, always.

Ok, so none of those are fixable and the only workaround is to replace all the programs, hoping that the android screw up doesn't affect them (as Gmail and Talk have the same problem it's more likely that it's android fault and not that both programs happen to have the exact same bug).

Let's see...
iOS - Never.
Android - Totally unreliable, can't even associate filetypes.
Windows Mobile - too old.

Guess it's Windows Phone then. Screw Android and the other barely useable google garbage.

Also:
If your battery drains quickly after an update, don't charge the smartphone till it turns off and then recharge it completely before turning it on again. That's how to fix this (unless it's really a software problem, which is rare).

Don't buy Windows Phone! At least not yet. Current gen devices wont get Windows 8 update. Nokia will be releasing the first Windows 8 phone on Sept or Oct.
