Question About Android?

I am pretty new to android and there was another thread that got me thinking. Are the different versions of Android more like service packs or completely new builds?

What I more or less mean is would Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) be more a Service Pack to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread?

What I am trying to figure out is this

Would it be more like a Service Pack coming out for Window's where it just enhances old features but is still pretty much the same package as before.

More like a OS upgrade like Windows Vista to Windows 7 where there based off each other but one is a complete upgrade over the other.

More like Windows XP vs Windows 7 where there only loosely based on each other and everything is pretty much different.

This is more or less the tech nerd in me wanting to know.

I figured there has to be some logic behind google giving the OS's new names other then just for fun.

I think the upgrades vary, at least from what little I’ve seen. In my case the ‘upgrade’ from Froyo to Gingerbread didn’t make anything noticably batter and in my case, made few minor things worse. To me, it was a service pack in reverse.

But from what I hear, the upgrades to Ice Cream and Jelly Bean are phenomenal, way beyond service pack standards. Others can confirm or deny.

I’ve had XP since the day it was born, got all three service packs and never noticed a thing.

also going from gingerbread to ICS to now JB will also vary from phone to phone and carrier to carrier. so it is not the same as a service pack. ics and gingerbread are pretty big differences from what i have seen. but i do remember not too much of a difference between froyo and gingerbread.

Gb to ics brought huge changes. It wouldn't be a service pack. 2.3 to 4.0

Jb is only an incremental update to ics. You could think of it as a service pack. But it also brings many new features. 4.0 to 4.1
