Root [CWM][WIP][DEV] Clockworkmod Recovery for the LG Viper 4G LGLS840

What was it i wanted to ask you, oh yeah...now since we dont have stable CWM yet...if i wanted to install a UOT theme...would using adb to push the modified systemui.apk and frameworkres.apk apply the theme?, or is there another way to install a .zipped theme w/out CWM?
yea that will work, but you will have to mount system as R/W tho ;)

And just a suggestion, learn to theme w/o UOT ;)

I suck at theming myself but what I do do, I do w/o uot. ;)

Anyone who is familar with CWM, when you make a NANDROID, you DO get .md5 / .tar files , OR you can convert them. Im just simply clarifying that the ODIN tool DOES in fact work with other models than samsung. Not trying to start a war whatsoever lol, just giving my input.

EDIT: as far as hotspot, Definitely don't ask sprint about that lol. I'm going to look into this myself and see which apps work / don't. I believe there may be a build.prop line I need to edit first...

Nah bro, I know THAT, lol I was asking because I have the LG source and I can build stock images. Just trying to find the time is being a b**** right now.. ;-)

Thank me when we know this will work Ryan.. ;-) lol

So, being used to my zte warp forever, I had moved last week ( while waiting on internet install , been using wifi tether app, and noticed within a day my 3g had been throttled intensly...Had to call sprint ..my younger cousin had been playing around and get it removed, ....they claim i just have to do a standard restet ##786#....but being rooted, it doesnt seem to lift the throttle, so I unrooted, now, i should be able to boot into regular recovery mode since i never flashed any cwm correct? I just want my 3g back man they throttled it hard...cant break like 10 kbps lol

Dude, Sprint doesn't throttle, or cap, lol. I've proven that! I've downloaded over 50gigs in one month with no slow down at all.. You said you were moving to an area where you would be lucky to have a signal at all. Sooo, lower signal = lower speed.. I'm sorry man. That's just how it is until they upgrade your area.. :-(

Bro, your 100% wrong. First off, this area actually had good 3g coverage. Now, whether you want to believe it or not...NO they dont throttle you , BUT , if you violate their terms, by using wifi tether and 1 gig of data without paying $10 extra for their tether service, you WILL GET THROTTLED. I had customer service CONFIRM i had a speed cap because I was " transmitting data in an unsupported manner. " So, yeah, ...I waS SHOCKED at first too...kept grabbing my girls phone, seeing if maybe a tower was down, but yeah unfortunately they capped it, but did say it was removed after I explained that my uhm, little cousin had been tethering unknowingly, but I've yet to sucessfully STOCK reset the phone, i unrooted, i went into download mode, have the lg software tool run, the tool says complete, but the phone sticks at download mode, forever, and when i eventually battery pull.....it goes to the halfass recovery that is not stock, its like...whatever was their prior...How exactly can i fully recover? ( I never installed the unstable CWM...therefore i thought my stock recovery is still there, yet when i run it...It's not stock lol...So yeah thats my story, be careful tethering ... and if anyone knows how to help, holla..

Not sure what your asking me,,,, by the way, can u check ur inbox? and if u mean tethering and cap not can, that certain app, the one where a member was compaining how his parents found out or something, i used that app, and after wickiid put the poor kid on BLAST, i found out sprint reallly does monitor/have ability to tell whether or not your tethering data and cap you. (Unless you pay an additional $10 or something /month (tether fee))

I find it funny/sad/messed up how you bashed that guy who bricked his phone and was worying about something how his parents if they found out about the root b/c of his tethering, and now ya know, you were wrong b/c i just experienced it...And i guess i worded it wrong, my prior home had spotty 3g ,and I assumed this area was spotty, but i had also switched from boost to sprint, so my new home had great 3g....Now, my download speeds literally wont go above like 10 kbps, when i was achieving the best 3g i've ever seen prior to this tether app...and speaking to sprint...

EDIT: REGARDLESS: instead of going back and forth, lets all put our minds together and move forward/look into this b/c it's going to cause others some issues.....i dont want to get into a heated debate lol, i want to get a stock image of my phone , a bit confused since i never flashed CWM, why stock recovery doesn't work...

OK, first off, I was never blasting/bashing/flaming/whatever you want to call it. I was explaining things simply, so it was easy to understand, because you never know a persons level of knowledge until you talk to them for a bit. If it came off as me doing as you described, I apologize. I feel bad that I haven't been able to put the stock images together for you all, but for a week straight (yeah, 7 days, lol), I would work all day, and then come home do dishes, and then have to cook, since noone else here really knows how to cook, so the last thing I wanted to do was get online and kill my brain on this stuff. That's how my days have been since I've started working.

As far as the tethering goes, I promise, I was using the tethering app, both on my phone, and my girl's phone, for a month and a half because of not having regular internet during that time. I downloaded over 50gigs on 4g (and 3g from time to time), and never got a cap or throttle, because if they did that, they would be breaking their own TOS, and could easily be sued for false advertising. If you have an unlocked phone that you brought over from boost to sprint, that could be how they caught you, because I was using the exact same app - it may be that I just had it set up right for the Viper - I don't know the exact circumstances why you got caught and I didn't. It may be as simple as being on the stock software, but that's doubtful, since I d/l'd 10 of those 50 on her phone. I would say, if you used Koush's tether app, that could be it too, since he has a bug in it that bottlenecks data (for whatever reason), but eliminated that since you said you used the wifi tether app.

Also, the tethering cost is $30 for 4gigs a month, and $50 for 6, not 10. It maybe 40/50, don't remember exactly, but it's more than 10, and the data amounts are right, that part I remember for sure.

Getting to your recovery problem. I figured out a little trick with the viper, and this will work since you never put on cwmr. If you're fairly tech savvy, enable extensions on win7 (or w/e you use), make a fake update.zip (it can even be a text file called that, lol, because their stock recovery only checks for file name, not size, lmao!), and put it on your msd-card, by whatever means you normally use for that. Reboot using an app or adb reboot recovery, and it will catch the fake update.zip and stop in stock recovery. You can wipe cache and/or data from there safely, even apply the real update manually from there if you have yet to update.

Now hey, I gotta get ready for work. I'll respond to your PM on break, if not, after work.

Peace,
~Wickid_D~

Hey i completely understand , don't feel bad about not getting recovery .img out for us, I've been busy as hell too, and out of the loop for a bit. Regardless I am very tech savvy, so I can try anything, this whole situation is just strange...I was thinking along the lines that you are, how it would be violating their TOS, But...I strictly did use the wifi tether app, and literally was told by customer service that the reason my 3g dropped so significantly IS because of tethering without paying for their service, ( of course Im not gonna pay money for just a few gigs, i just didn't know they would somehow be able to notice that the data is used thru tethering, especially since that app does not use the stock tethering settings, regardless, i am capped, and they did tell me word for word, (how i go about speaking to the next supervisor, that im going to plan out...),As far as boost to sprint, i am not using any unlocked phone, Simply the Viper i got with my contract, I'm on the same page as you , my business has been taking off so im on the forums less and less, therefore i didnt go deep into the settings of the app, just noticed it working and figured it's fine...So regardless my issue lies in just attempting to "temporarily" factory reset...

I appreciate your help/input very much by the way, and Honestly when i get some time I'm pretty sure i can compile a stock one myself....issue is...maybe its the root method, im not sure...but, it seems like there is no STOCK recovery for me to access at all, although i never installed CWM...at this point maybe im better off w/ the beta CWM, but regardless, when i do lets say droidgram pro/root toolbox reboot to recovery, it goes to the factory reset screen ( which in turn is definitely not restoring system apps at all...)...Am i missing something here? Not a noob by far yet feel like...why am I not getting this lol...I have also tried the mobile support tool multiple times, I put the phone in download mode...go to the recovery/restore option, enter my serial, it downloads, it installs, it claims its done, but the handset itself hangs in download mode saying download in progress...(As we speak im letting it sit, maybe i didn't give it enough time...Now im re reading what you typed, And I see...Since i'm already on the update, it doesn't catch an update .zip , therefore won't go to the real stock recovery ,i'll definitily try what you mentioned next as far as a fake update.zip ( noob stuff cmon lol course i can do that ), question is, will it still allow me to get into stock recovery,,,,) this whole brainfart i am writing half asleep so I shall go back to sleep with the phone still in download mode to see if the mobile support tool did anything this time, ( tried xp compatibility mode ) . . . My thing is, Why would customer service instruct me to do the reset/user profile whipe and supply me with my MSL if it wasn't really capped, and if doing so wouldn't fix it, ( is it their attempt to make sure I don't have " unsupported software "? They don't care whether or not we root, its the manufacturer's and the warranty which is the only issue...they don't support it but don't care, " I Believe"...anyway, hopefully we get this figured out, and in general so we can all start to dive deeper into DEV with a stable recovery and start ROMming...

On a last note, my phone has had battery issues/overheating issues from day one, so I may just call LG, unroot, and send back for replacement, anyway thx for response, get some rest like i am b/c it sounds lke your situation is simliar, and i'm close to just shutting down if i dont get sleep lol...talk later peace.

@n0ve: I've got the day off tomorrow, so I'm going to get to your post tonight as well as your pm (sorry I haven't done that yet). In short, quite honestly, I've been wondering a LOT of the same things about your situation. I don't understand why you're getting the factory reset screen and not the stock recovery when you use any of those reboot methods. That's the weirdest part. I'm typing this from memory, so please understand if this isn't exact, but the recovery partition path is /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 (I know the number is 13 by some deep exploration into the phone), and I believe the factory reset part is part of /same/path/asabove8 (I haven't been able to confirm that one).

I take it you know your way around adb and 'adb-ing in', so next time your phone is up, and you CAN adb in, try dd-ing this attachment (unzip it on your computer first, and adb push it to your msd-card, obviously - it should expand to about 16Mb) to part 13 above, and use the aforementioned reboot methods with the fake update.zip in place, and that should pop you into the stock recovery. (if it gives you an error about cross file systems, or something of that nature, use root explorer or something else where you can remount / rewriteable, copy it to /, then dd) No, this won't allow you to restore the system apps, but you can at least put it back to stock, user-wise, by wiping the data and cache safely (which I think that's all the factory reset system does anyway). For restoring the system apps, that's what my more in-depth reply will contain. Unfortunately, pulling them from the real update won't work because the update is pretty much entirely just patches.

But try that for now, and see if we can't at least get you back into stock recovery.

For now..

Peace,
~Wickid_D~

p.s. This is the updated stock recovery, and I recall you saying you had done the update already, so I hope this works.

It will boot the the fact reset screen when booting to recovery even with cwm installed. Difference will be with cwm it wont do the fact reset, just boot the fact rest screen, confirm, then it will boot to cwm.

The stock recovery wont ever show up as you know it, just that fact eest screen.

n0ve said earlier he never installed the cwm recovery. And personally, I've had no problem getting my girl's viper to reboot into stock recovery using one of the methods we mentioned earler, so that, combined with him never installing cwmr, is why it has me confused why he can't reboot to stock recovery. Besides, dd'ing the factory recovery back to where it's supposed to be should once again allow booting to it. dd raw writes data, as you probably already know, so it would overwrite any custom recovery on that partition.

Speaking of which, n0ve, I'm getting ready to compile the stock images here in a bit, so you should be able to pull the system apps from it when all is said and done.

catch y'all in a bit..
