Hey, everyone!

So I have decided to start this neat little thread, right here. Yes, this one.

So, everyone. What is your OS of choice, and why?

What about it is something you like? Maybe you could share some secrets/tweaks/etc you have? (Especially to those conky fans ;D)

So how about it?

Me? Its Scientific Linux. Based on RedHat, one of my favorite distros. Using Gnome2 for that nice, yet simplistic look. And it just...works for what I need. Usually, configuring BCM4313 wireless cards can be quite annoying, especially if it won't let you compile from source.

However this one, it worked (sluggishly) out of the box, and all I had to do was open terminal, and install broadcom-wl. My PC runs GREAT with this.

What about you folks? Windows? Mac? Some sort of Linux/Unix build? Please, enlighten me. There are a few of you who I'm really curious about what you use.

I'm a long time linux user, currently using Mageia 2, a fork of Mandriva. I've tried a few different ones over the years but decided to stick with a so called easy distro.

I do have Win XP also but haven't installed it on my current desktop system. I also have a Mini Mac running Tiger OSX. It's setup on my HDTV as my multimedia system.

Android on my phone! :)

PCLinuxOS XFCE and Enlightenment desktops on Desktop boxes, PCLinuxOS XFCE on Laptop. Mint just to play with Cinnamon/Mate. Win7 when I Absolutely have to.

I started playing with Linux around Ubuntu Dapper, never intended it to become my main OS, I just appreciate the stability and control it gives you. Even more since I became a Mature Student doing a Bachelor's in Computer Forensics and Security.

Right now, OS X snow leopard (I'm on Leopard). It comes on my laptop. Moved from widows XP & find it much better. For some reason I don't trust Lion + for being too much like iOS, but then I haven't tried it so I'm being ignorant.

When the laptop carks it I'll look at tablets, seriously looking at the latest android. My desktop (XP) also had Ubuntu partition so used that more than windows.

Android or Ubuntu.

I'm a Wintel Engineer so I prefer working with windows. However curiosity and customisability makes my OS (And flavour) of choice Linux Ubuntu.

I like how I can do pretty much whatever I want with it.

Unlike many linux users, I do not find Linux more stable than Windows. Maybe I'm just proficient at making Windows stable. I do find I have to reboot linux every now and then.

I find Windows more intuitive to use. I find Linux more fun to use.

It really all depends, I think at least, on how much you know on computers, and what you DO with them.

For example, I browse the web on mine, send email, youtube, the basics. Its a Compaq Presario CQ57, so it's really not that high end of a PC; Linux suits me fine, whereas Windows really...wasn't cutting it for me. I mean, not to say it wasn't stable, but I really enjoy that I can customize Linux fully. Sure, I'll have to reboot my linux machine once a week...but its worth it, in my eyes.

I use windows 7. Its a huge upgrade for GUI (mainly the taskbar) compared to windows XP. Windows runs all the programs I need. Windows is all I've ever known. With the 3rd party programs I have installed, its more productive than plain windows 7. I can use multiple desktops similar to Linux, I can sync music and video easily with my phone our other USB drives by using SyncToy, and make my own hotkeys with AutoHotKey.

I did try Linux a few months ago. I gave up when I couldn't get it to connect to the internet.

I use avg on Linux. Yes its much much less likely to contract a virus. After all, you can't topple governments with linux viruses.
I did try ClamAV once on a Debian system just to see how it ran on linux, but removed it the same day. It doesn't hurt to be safe though!

When I ran Windows, I never got a virus either, though I did have AV installed. It's the grandkids that contract viruses on Windows, now I don't worry about it with Linux!

I used clam on windows server because it was free. There's always a battle between best free windows desktop os AV. Bit out of the loop myself, supporting corporate environments.

Never worried per se...
