Samsung's Galaxy S has four times the polygon power of Snapdragon

When we got some hands-on time with the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S, it was painfully apparent that the thing has some serious power under the hood. Now we have a better idea of just how much power, with reports indicating that it has the graphics oomph (thanks to its PowerVR SGX540 GPU) to push 90 million triangles per second. Compare that to the Snapdragon platform, which manages 22 million polygons, and the iPhone 3GS's 28 million from the earlier SGX535, and you get a feel for the muscle lurking behind that gorgeous Super AMOLED screen. Of course, polygon counts aren't everything when it comes to graphical power these days, and 300 million triangles won't help you if your handset gets laggy after you install every single Bejeweled clone in the Android Market, but forgive us if we're a little excited about the rapidly brewing mobile GPU war.

I also saw this and did a double take. I don't really understand the image processing technology of polygons, they could be little elfs with pixel hammers for all I care. However, it does appear that the Galaxy S blows away even the N1 by a factor of 4 considering the graphics ouput you actually see. Please put this shit on Verizon or Sprint.

If this dropped on Sprint I would seriously consider it over the Evo since the closest 4G market is 2 hours away. Though I would want to add sense UI to it. Hopefully its not locked down in anyway.

Honestly, i would take this phone over EVO anyday. The sub 1 cm profile with the best screen and processor in the industry is hard to ignore. I don't care for Samsung's UI but i also could live without Sense. It's really the apps and coverage that make a smartphone worthy. I am still waiting to see what that front facing cam is capable of, they haven't even touched on video calling in there presentation. Is that because it's still only 3G capable?

I believe it's only a GSM phone right now thus Verizon/Sprint are out. If however a CDMA version hits american shores.....I will ignore the 4G hoopla until I see WIMAX survive the emergence of LTE later this year.

Come on Samsung, gimme me some dates and pricing!

True, but i'm sure there will be a way to get sense on it. ;)

I could live without sense also. If this phone were to hit sprint's outlet, It would definitely be a tough choice between this and the EVO. I also could live without the front facing camera if I need to broadcast something there is a camcorder on the phone, and it records in hi-def, I could always put it on my computer. I also don't need to give any of my friends free wifi, especially the iphone toting turds.

I think engadget is a MUCH better source than wiki...

I'm not sure, they are clearly getting their info from this page:
POWERVR SGX540 from Imagination Technologies now in silicon
"POWERVR SGX540 typically delivers twice the performance of POWERVR SGX530 while consuming significantly less than double the silicon area or power consumption."

And than I found this "POWERVR SGX545 delivers real-world performance of 40 million polygons/sec and 1 Gpixels/sec fillrate at 200MHz"
Imagination Technologies announces POWERVR SGX545 graphics IP core with full DirectX 10.1, OpenGL 3.2 and OpenCL 1.0 capabilities

All I can figure is they are quoting unshaded polygons.

Though I did find on the fact sheet that it said the line SGX520-SGX545 are capable of 7m–140m Triangles/sec*
* Realistic, sustainable, SoC performance at 200 MHz (e.g., less than 50% shader load); peak performance significantly higher dependent on content and operating conditions.
http://www.imgtec.com/factsheets/powervr/POWERVR_SGX_Series5_IP_Core_Family.pdf

So those numbers don't match with the other ones... Sadly I can't find a single page that has all of them listed on it so I know the measuring was not botched somehow.

There was a site that said during CTIA that samsung is doing everything they can to get this phone on all 4 major carriers in the US. If sprint doesn't do it I think it'll only be because they want to push the Evo with it's "4G", sprint seems to be the only phone company that goes out of it's way to give it's customers choices for phones :( I am getting ready to leave them if they don't announce the Evo will be out by mid june at the latest, sick of the phone I have and they have nothing worth buying right now.

This is all well and good but what point is it if the apps and games are not developed for it. Android is fragmented due to so many different devices, unlike Apple. So im not sure if people should be jumping for joy. It's nice though that hardware wise it matches up and more.

I don't think that you're very familiar with android. ANY android app or game will be compatible with Galaxy S.

just like loriolus said bavlondon all android devices share the same market so this phone will be able to download and run all the apps in the market

The point I am making as there is so much fragmentation of devices on Android developers will only be able to target specific phones if really looking to make a high end game, like say Fifa 2010. Not all Android phones have the hardware that can run these types of games.

For the current crop of apps they are simple to say the least so of course they will run on any android device.

I suppose my whole point was predecated on the assumption that developers DO want to create gaming for android on par with gaming on iphone.

oh.. now i get ur point and i agree with u too but since device has really "off the chain" spec it will be good for this galaxy s if they do create a high end game for them but doesn't this mean galaxy s will be able to access more applications from the market then??
