Help Music shows duplicate songs but physically there are no duplicates...

So I recently installed the AOKP ICS ROM and now for the past month it shows in my music that I have 4 of every single song I have but only the 4th song of every set of duplicates actually plays and when I check it on the computer it only shows one of each song and I only have one music folder and i manually put all of my music from my computer to my phone I have no syncing apps on either my phone or computer so it's not trying to sync my music or anything and I put all of the exact copies of the music on my samsung galaxy tab 2 and they show up just fine and I have no problems. I have deleted all of my songs several times and recopied them from both my computer and my phone and its the same problem. This is extremely frustrating!!! Does anyone know why this is happening? I have googled this problem but every post I found the person was using a syncing app or program and none of the solutions applied to my problem...

Hmmm that seems about right. and i just fixed it. i used the ID3 fixer app and fixed the database and it put all of the duplicates or shortcuts or whatever in a separate album and the actual songs themselves in their own albums and i was able to delete them album by album. and apparently they were very small files so them being shortcuts is the only thing that makes sense. I don't know what caused it but it is fixed now for the time being.

I had this ::: SAME ::: problem on two of my new SkyRockets! First time, I ended up removing all of the music and then having to go back and replace each individual album cover to better quality 'album cover picture' (2 hours worth of tedious work, after I spent 3.5 hours the first time - 30 days prior). Then it happened again on my 2nd Skyrocket! Super annoying!!!!!!!!! I'm wondering if I should have just deleted the extra songs to save my album cover art . Ridiculous and I'm sure this won't be the last for either phone .... ugh.

You can try to clear this up by doing this:

Go into Manage Apps
Clear data for DRM, Media Scanner, and your music player (this may reset settings in your music player so record them before you do this)
Reboot the phone

Media Scanner will run when you reboot, and it may take a while to scan all the media on the phone.

I've used this to clear up the duplicate entries in Player Pro - this happens sometime when I flash a new ROM and have to wipe the phone before flashing. I use Titanium Backup to restore data for apps, and I sometimes end up with duplicate entries for songs in Player Pro.

Help? Anyone have an inkling why these Samsung Galaxy's phones are duplicating songs repeatedly even after we clear the cache? My own SkyRocket has done this twice in the last month (Nov) & the 2nd phone on my account is up 3 times this month (ugh). I use my wireless to access the internet on a reg basis, but the 2nd skyrocket on my plan has wireless and Data turned "off", so it's purely a phone, text and music player. It's so annoying. We have to keep resetting the caller and phone ringtones plus unique playlists too .. ugh. So much for 2 new phones (Sept 2012) with no issues. :(

I noticed duplicates (or more) happen each time the microSD card is removed and re inserted. I suspect the device must be turned on without the card in place. Whatever the exact conditions, "media storage" adds the files as new even though identical file name already exist. Removing the microSD card to add new music via a desktop will cause this to happen under certain conditions. Thanks to LoafPincher for finding the fix.

I have had this happen many times on my galaxy note and what I do is I turn off phone, remove sd card then tur on phone and go to my music player and delete all the currents songs. Then turn off phone and put sd card in and then let the music player re add the music. The problem is this doesnt stop the phone from doing the duplicates again...

So what is the problem ?? Iv noticed it happens when i plug my phone into my computer, perhaps its because of this. My phone also gives an error message sometimes when i plug into computer and tells me to download a service pack for my windows 7 computer. Could this be the problem? could a counterfeit windows be to blame?? anyone else having similar problems?

I have been using drag and drop music to my phone, but now im wondering if i should delete everything on SD card and use AIR droid and send the music through wifi to my phone. maybe this will help.

Perfect Solution. Thank you very much. I spent about an hour trying to track down where those alias files were located so I could delete them but failed to find them so I did a Google search to see if anyone else had the same "duplicated" list of songs. Finding this thread was great. I simply cleared the data in the Media Storage app and those aliases are all gone. Thank you for the info.

Fixed the duplicates by doing this:

Goto Settings > Apps > Media Storage, select Clear Data, then Reboot.

Using AOKP, but it should work with the stock rom.

Thanks very much to LoafPincher (and BillyMac1) for posting their fixes for this annoying duplicate/bogus file issue.

I realize this thread is about the AT&T version of the Galaxy S2, but this fix worked on my Tmobile Galaxy S2 (SGH-T989)as well... the only minor glitch is that clearing data in Media Storage also wiped out the playlists I'd created in the phone's music player (but all my individual songs and albums were intact).

Yes deleting the data in the media storage works. Then after a little while the duplicates, triplicates etc reappear. This has happened to me on my (original) Galaxy Note with three different music transfer apps; two different music players; whether or not the transfer has been manual or synced, whether via USB or wireless; whether my phone is plugged in or not etc etc. It seems to me the bug is in the phone and needs FIXING!!! Help!

I tried this, I have no more duplicates but my ringtones/alerts were reset and I get an annoying repeating "beep" sound every time I get a text message on top of the tone I have set... That "beep" is very similar to what I get when my TV cant read an ext hard drive because it need an extra usb cable (y splitter) to power the drive.

That "beep" sounds like a system sound but it is muted when the phone is in silent mode.

Does it matter if you have the SD card in or not???

AFAIK, it shouldn't matter.

The reset is normal, but I'm not sure what to make of the beep. I don't think anyone else has experienced that issue. Are you using the stock messaging app or a 3rd party app like Handcent?

I have Handcent, uninstalled it and still get the beep.

Now I have that beep and my music started getting duplicated again.

Saw there was a new firmware available through Kies, will have to try that next. :/

Oh and I lost all my text messages today... no idea whats going on...
