How does voLTE work?

Actually I just read something different. Right now the service is only available in Dallas, but will be expanding in the coming weeks. This makes is sound like all Connects when it says "capable". I'm not sure. If it were a different device, it would have a different model or vs number and there aren't any. So I'm thinking you just have to live where the service is provided.

"in terms of global deployment, MetroPCS is the first carrier in the world to roll out Voice over LTE support for a handset. Specifically, the LG Connect 4G can take advantage of VoLTE technology, which is currently in place only in Dallas, Texas for the time being. MetroPCS, however, plans to deploy the technology in more markets and launch additional smartphones capable of using VoLTE in the coming weeks.

For now, the LG Connect 4G operating on VoLTE providers superior call quality since it is using technology capable of producing clearer calls. MetroPCS claims the move to VoLTE will be seamless and transparent for customers"

According to this, the carrier is still deciding whether or not to upgrade existing Connect 4G phones to VoLTE -

VoLTE requires that the capability exist in the LTE modem as well as firmware. LG has a tendency to use a Qualcomm LTE chip that's VoLTE capable, so a firmware update to provide it would make sense.

I live in Michigan and I bought my connect a couple of weeks after it was released.

In the last few days my call quality has improved exponentially. Frankly. it's remarkably better.

I don't think I'm succumbing to the power of suggestion and believe I know what I'm talking about.

My office is in the basement of a 2 story home and my wife, temporarily in a wheelchair, calls me on my MS840 all the time. Until the last few days the quality has been problematic. Not true any longer.

To answer the original question flat out....

Volte (voice-over-lte) will work exactly the same as voip (voice-over-internet-protocol) meaning that if you have a steady 4g signal the phone will push your phone calls over the lte network instead of over the much slower cdma network.
It may require an over the air update but that will most likely occur when you don't notice, like at 3am while the phone is charging. Other than that it runs automatically and you don't need to turn it on or select it while placing or receiving a call.

Again Volte is the same as voip but not nearly as choppy and much clearer than cdma.

this confirms that metro will indeed dump its CDMA network and never intended on improving their 3G data.

people complaining about metros 3G need to stop complaining and upgrade to a 4G handset.

How so?
There still isn't a smartphone that can suit the customers who only want talk and text and a phone that's well, a phone. It wouldn't make sense to dump a fully working network for standard 1x users or basic 3g users when those are still the better penetrating and more stable network choices. The lte in 4gLte stands for "long term evolution" (I maybe off on the evolution part, I'll Google later) so it would be more likely for them to eventually upgrade to true 4g and keep the existing cdma network that supports their entire range of handsets as opposed to pulling a Nextel and loosing thousands of customers because you completely drop a cell system (remember Iden?)

it'll be a process but its gonna happen. the article just confirms what i've been saying that its been metro's plan to eventually shut down their CDMA network and pave over it with LTE.

I misunderstood you, sorry.

Yeah, I can forsee a gradual shutdown if standard handsets were made cdma/4g and phased to 4g only over the course of 5-10 years. Sprint ordered Iden shut down seven years ago and offered upgrades to keep customers that still had contracts but ended up selling access to boost mobile instead. Iden is finally down afaik but sprint/Nextel lost a lot of customers to the switch over and I'm sure bronco wireless learned from that.

MetroPCS Launches World's First VoLTE Service
Aug 7, 2012, 4:55 PM updated Aug 7, 2012, 5:40 PM

MetroPCS today announced that it has become the first carrier in the world to launch Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) service, and started selling the world's first commercially-available VoLTE phone, an updated version of the LG Connect, which first went on sale in March. MetroPCS plans to start selling additional VoLTE-capable phones in the coming weeks. According to a spokesperson, the company has not yet determined whether existing Connect phones will be upgraded to support VoLTE, and there are "no plans" to offer VoLTE upgrades for other already-released LTE phones. All previous 4G LTE phones must rely on 3G or 2G networks for voice calls, requiring two overlapping networks for full service, one for voice and one for data. The launch of VoLTE permits 4G-only voice and data, paving the way for the eventual sunset of 2G and 3G networks. In MetroPCS' case, it will allow the company to shut down its CDMA network sooner. LTE is more efficient than CDMA, and running two networks adds its own inefficiencies. Therefore an accelerated move to 4G LTE-only service will allow MetroPCS to make better use of its licensed radio spectrum. Earlier today, two Korean carriers announced plans to launch VoLTE tomorrow. With this announcement, MetroPCS beat them to the world-first title by just a few hours.

Notice this line : the company has not yet determined whether existing Connect phones will be upgraded to support VoLTE,

Well remember Prime Co, pagers, analog cell's (the bag phone, The brick, the star tac). All long gone. This is just another step in the evolution of Mobile tech. Don't forget that Att and the big V bought up the old analog TV 700MHZ to make there LTE systems. I have friends that are tower installers and all the carriers do it differently. I have had many the discussion on infrastructure and the fact that it will truly take years to complete the upgrades for everyone.
