Help Question about deep sleep, "Awake", and wakelocks

I've been doing a lot of tweaking with my SGS3, and am glad to say that my battery life has improved significantly since I learned about some helpful tweaks here on the forum.

However, I'm still trying to better learn what causes the phone to become "awake" while it is not being used. Here is a screenshot from a particularly uneventful cycle:

I noticed that the screen was turned on very few times, but the phone is frequently becoming "awake". The battery life looks pretty good, but I also barely used the phone.

(during this cycle I have turned off sync, wi-fi except where shown, GPS and BT. The only thing left on that I know of is mobile data.)

I checked wakelocks on BetterBatteryStats, and they seem pretty low from what I can tell. The highest percentages are usually "PowerManagerService" or "bam_dmux_wakelock", but they are generally under 5%.

Here are my questions:

Just so I understand the term, are "wakelocks" specifically what are causing the phone to become awake, as it shows in the photo?

Is there a way of knowing what apps are causing the wakelocks, or the "awake" status, so that I can tweak those settings or remove those particular apps? BBS seems somewhat helpful, but I still can't fully tell what apps are waking the phone.

Lastly, are there any apps that help you control how much or when the phone wakes up while in a deep sleep? For example, being able to override anything that causes my phone to wake up except for texts or phone calls?

Thanks for the help!

There is another thread just a few rows away from this one discussing the same thing. I just posted there but maybe I'll join this as you are asking basically the same questions I am.

I'll repost my post here

What is this?.......when I look at my battery graph at the end of the day I see a lot of little blue blips where my phone was awake, presumably to receive emails or sync something. Does that mean I have a "wake lock issue" or does a wake lock mean that my phone NEVER goes to sleep?

just trying to understand if I need to be doing something. I'm not yet willing to do a "turn off all data communication whenever the screen is off" because I would like to get notifications and emails. I guess now that I think about it, I wonder if it is less efficient to stay with PUSH email versus setting my email to check once per hour or even two. I can always go into email and hit the sync button and wait a minute if I really want to see email. Would I be saving much power though in reality or do those little wakeups under a PUSH regime not drain much?

Any thoughts appreciated - thanks

I had the same fascination being new to android. An app called Gsam battery monitor has been very useful - if you go to App Usage, one of the toggles is to see the number of wakelocks for each program.

There may be better apps for controling "how much the phone wakes up", but I've started using Juicedefender. It keeps phone/text on, but only sync's for other things like gmail/facebook every 15 minutes (or you can set otherwise). It has addded about 30% to my battery life so far - many people get more, but I was always fairly good about turning my wifi etc. on/off myself.

Hope that helps!

WOW - ok so I actually shut off my wifi here at work (since there is no wifi signal) and my battery decline line is much "shallower" now than with wifi on. I'm guessing I'm down to 1-2% per hour instead of 3-4%.

Now is there an app that can automatically shut off wifi when I'm away from home yet turn back on when I get home? How would it know to turn back on when I get home if the wifi is off?

ok so I think I dont have any wakelocks or anything like that but I believe what's draining my battery is battery signal. At work, my signal is horrible. There's like only 1 bar and sometimes 0 bars. I rarely get emails/whatsapp messages at work because the connection is this bad.

As you can see from the screenshots, 50% of my battery is because of cell standby. Is there anyway I can avoid this from happening?

Timed triggers or cell tower nearby in "tasker".

Use times. I know I'm out between x and y so it turns off at x and on at y.

However I put a Claus in so if I'm still connected to my wifi (like a day off work) x wont disconnect....

Ok thanks......I recall looking last year at the Play Market and there were a bunch of "Wifi On/Off" apps so maybe one of them will do it too. Although I don't want the app to end up eating all the battery savings. I've never looked at Tasker so I'll have to figure out how to use that.
