Root rooting my eris

How do I root my eris. I read all this threads about roms that I thought rooted your phone if you flash them. I tried to use evil eris 1.0 but I failed. Then I was told that I needed to be rooted before I can Install it. So I guess the question is: how do I do a simple root for my 1.5 so I can flash the other roms? Is that how it works? Or am I mistaking?

The problem with the evil eris was when I tried to reboot my eris went to a screen with a triangle and inside was an exclamation point and a phone in front. What does that mean? And what is a recovery image? Do I need that before I get rooted?

This are my questions! Lol thank you

Please help i really want the root 2.1 or any different then stock out the box.
